Autoimmune Disease
Autoimmune Disease' Dr. Chidi Ngwaba
Estimated read time: 1:20
Summary
In this talk, Dr. Chidi Ngwaba explains autoimmune disease as a kind of “friendly fire,” where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. He describes the immune system as the body’s protective army and argues that autoimmunity begins in the gut, especially when the gut lining becomes “leaky.” According to the speaker, triggers such as stress, certain drugs, milk proteins, animal proteins, and sugar can contribute to inflammation and immune dysfunction. He also emphasizes that autoimmune disease disproportionately affects Black people, especially Black women, and claims it may play a role in infertility. The talk promotes vitamin D, stress management, and a plant-based diet as key ways to improve immune health and reduce autoimmune problems.

Overview
This video uses a vivid “friendly fire” metaphor to explain autoimmune disease, saying the immune system sometimes mistakes the body’s own tissues for enemies. Dr. Chidi Ngwaba describes the immune system as a highly organized defense force that normally protects against viruses, bacteria, and even cancer, but can become misdirected and attack organs and tissues instead.
A major theme in the talk is the gut. The speaker argues that leaky gut allows large proteins — especially milk and animal proteins — to enter the bloodstream, where the immune system treats them as foreign. He says these immune reactions can then spill over and target tissues in places like the joints or brain, leading to illnesses such as arthritis or multiple sclerosis.
The talk closes with lifestyle-based suggestions for reducing autoimmune issues, including avoiding sugar, increasing vitamin D through sunlight, managing stress, and following a plant-based diet. The speaker also frames autoimmune disease as especially common among Black women and links it to infertility, ending with a message of healing, health, and hope for Africa.
Chapters
- 00:00 - 01:30: Introduction to the Yellow Color and Autoimmune Disease The speaker introduces the yellow color as representing autoimmune disease, framing it as the body’s own immune system turning against itself, similar to “friendly fire.” They explain the immune system’s normal role in protecting against viruses, bacteria, and cancer, and note that autoimmunity can affect many tissues and lead to numerous diseases, including thyroid disease.
- 01:30 - 03:00: How Autoimmunity Works: Antibodies Attacking the Body The chapter explains autoimmune disease as “friendly fire,” where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues instead of outside invaders. It introduces the immune system as the body’s defense army and lists examples of autoimmune conditions such as thyroid disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.
- 03:00 - 04:30: Examples of Autoimmune Conditions The speaker explains that autoimmune diseases occur when antibodies attack the body’s own tissues, giving examples such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis. They claim that leaky gut allows large proteins, especially milk and animal proteins, into the bloodstream, which the immune system may mistake for foreign invaders and then attack similar proteins in organs and tissues.
- 04:30 - 06:00: Leaky Gut, Food Proteins, and Triggering Immune Reactions The speaker explains that many autoimmune conditions, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and even some infertility cases, begin with immune dysfunction linked to the gut. He argues that when the gut becomes 'leaky,' large proteins such as milk and other animal proteins can enter the bloodstream and trigger antibodies to attack the body’s own tissues if they resemble those proteins.
- 06:00 - 07:30: Diet, Sunlight, and Vitamin D for Immune Balance The speaker emphasizes removing triggers that can worsen leaky gut and inflammation, especially sugar, which is described as a major contributor to gut and systemic inflammation. They connect dietary cleanup with reducing autoimmune flares.
Autoimmune Disease' Dr. Chidi Ngwaba Transcription
- Segment 1: 00:00 - 02:30 Great to be back with you. Now, we have been looking at some of these life colors. Each color represents a way to reverse a chronic disease. This evening, we are going to look at the yellow color. And that is autoimmune disease. I think when you look around the world today, there's war everywhere. Am I right? War and rumors of war absolutely everywhere. And it's obviously a tragedy when even one person dies in the war. But I'll tell you something else. A greater tragedy is when you get something called friendly fire. How on earth can you have friendly fire? Well, this is when rather than being killed by your enemy, you're killed by members of your own team. Usually, the Americans bombing the Europeans, but that's another matter. So, friendly fire is when you're being hit by your own team. Well, that's very much like what goes on in our own bodies. We get friendly fire of ourselves. And that is what autoimmune disease is. Let's just look at the immune system. You know, we have a beautifully formed body that protects us from all sorts of invaders, viruses, bacteria, all sorts of things. In fact, we have these beautiful cells that go around the body looking for trouble. They look for viruses, bacteria, they look for cancer. They're like our own army in our bodies. They have headquarters all over our bodies in lymph nodes and areas in our under our arms, in our throat, even in our bones. And anytime there's a virus or bacteria, the immune system is awakened and binds to the bacteria and destroys it. Now, that's a even a message of of for cancer. So, autoimmunity is actually friendly fire. Anywhere you have tissue in your body, you will have
- Segment 2: 00:00 - 02:30 antibodies that are able to attack it and cause an immune problem. Here are just some of the hundreds of diseases that you can have. Thyroid disease,
- Segment 3: 02:30 - 05:00 lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis. Everywhere you have tissue, when the antibodies attack it, it's an autoimmune problem. I will say this also. Much of infertility is an autoimmune problem. If I take you back to London with me, I can take you to one of the best experts in the world on fertility. He will charge you 25,000 pounds to try and make you conceive. But I'm telling you something. What I'm telling you today is free. You can overcome infertility if you can overcome an autoimmune disease. So, let's go into it, shall we? I'll tell you this. Autoimmune disease is a it's predominantly affects us as black people. And it predominantly affects women more than men. So, black women suffer more with this than anybody else. And I feel that that may be a reason why not enough is known about autoimmunity. For example, if you know an expert if you know an expert in thyroid disease, well, that's an expert in taking out your thyroid or having drugs for your thyroid, not how to prevent it and not how to reverse it. Why on earth does it happen? It all starts in the gut. You know, when we were children, you know, mother gave us lots of lots of milk, lots of cow's milk. Well, that causes a problem. We have this thing called a leaky gut syndrome. I'll show you what it means. Our guts are covered with a single cell layer of cells. That prevent things from coming in and accept things that we need. When we have leaky gut, and by the way, we get leaky gut anytime we're stressed, if we're on certain drugs, or if if the weather's in in not not in appropriate place for us, that causes a leaky gut and large proteins get into
- Segment 4: 02:30 - 05:00 the bloodstream that shouldn't do so. Now, especially milk proteins, animal proteins, when they get into the system, your body identifies them as foreign. So, the antibodies attack them. Now, when the antibodies attack them, they then go around your body looking for similar protein codes to attack. If the similar code is in your joints, it will attack your joints, you get arthritis. If it's in your brain, you get multiple sclerosis. So, we need to
- Segment 5: 05:00 - 07:30 get rid of the things that can cause a leaky gut. For example, sugar absolutely always causes a leaky gut, causes inflammation both of the gut and of the end organs. Other things that you need to do. This is not an extensive list of what you need to do to overcome autoimmunity. We know that the people who stay in the sun the most, when you get the vitamin D, it does something that no drug can do. Vitamin D raises your good immune system and suppresses the bad immune system all at the same will make all autoimmune diseases worse. We talked about it before. We need to learn how to manage our stress. When it comes to the diet, I'm going to keep promoting it, plant-based this. If you want to know how to make the food that can get rid of your autoimmune disease, that's what you do. Now, the next talk I'm going to give is about how to heal and have health and have hope for Africa. Okay. So, I want you to make sure that you're definitely here. Because if you do that, if you come, not only will you be arising in health, not only will you be arising in healing, but you will arise in hope. Have a good evening.
