• 01:00 - 02:00: The Importance of Diplomacy This chapter discusses the crucial role of diplomacy both on a personal level and in international relations. It highlights how the absence of diplomacy can lead to increased hostility, tension, and even violence among individuals. Similarly, on a global scale, the lack of diplomatic engagement between nations can escalate into conflicts and potentially war, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic efforts to maintain peace and understanding.
• 02:00 - 05:00: History of Diplomacy The chapter 'History of Diplomacy' discusses the importance of diplomacy in maintaining peaceful and stable relationships among individuals, groups, and nations. It highlights Mariam Webster's definition of diplomacy as the art and skill of conducting negotiations without causing hostility. Diplomacy is portrayed as crucial for maintaining peace, security, and stability, ensuring open communication channels, and addressing significant challenges.
• 05:00 - 07:00: Bilateral Relations and US Diplomacy The chapter delves into the history and evolution of diplomacy, beginning from ancient times. Diplomacy is as old as 2850 BCE, with early treaties exchanged in Mesopotamia, now modern-day Iraq. By the 14th century BC, regions like Egypt and the ancient East were engaging in diplomatic marriages, forming friendships, and exchanging goods as part of their diplomatic interactions. The chapter explores these historical foundations to understand current bilateral relations and US diplomacy.
• 07:00 - 10:00: Changes in Diplomacy The chapter discusses the evolution of diplomacy, starting with early diplomatic exchanges in Mayan cities. It then moves on to the establishment of the first embassies in Northern Italy in the 14th century BC. Initially, diplomats were dispatched for specific negotiations, returning as soon as their missions concluded. The text also highlights how historically, diplomats were often drawn from the ruling or wealthy classes, as their status provided greater legitimacy in international negotiations.
• 10:00 - 15:00: Types of Diplomacy Diplomacy often involves negotiations between two nations or states, otherwise known as bilateral relations.
• 15:00 - 18:00: Role of a US Diplomat This chapter discusses the role of a US diplomat during the Civil War, highlighting the significance of diplomacy in the Union's strategy to win the war. It explains that one of the key issues at the time was slavery, which was contentious among both citizens and diplomats. The Confederacy aimed to secure international support and wanted to export cotton to European countries. In response, Union diplomacy was crucial in persuading European powers not to recognize the Confederacy as a legitimate nation and to refrain from providing financial support. The chapter also touches on how the practice of diplomacy evolved after the Civil War.
• 18:00 - 21:00: Becoming a Diplomat This chapter explores the historical journey of African-Americans becoming diplomats for the United States, beginning from the 1860s when formerly enslaved individuals started to represent the U.S. in national office and abroad. It highlights the increase of diplomats of color post-World War II, during the Cold War, and amid the 1960 Civil Rights Movement. The narrative parallels the African-American history in the Foreign Service to women's history, both embodying tenacity, strength, resilience, and triumph despite significant barriers.
• 21:00 - 22:30: Conclusion The chapter 'Conclusion' discusses the historical attitudes of American society during the 20th century, particularly focusing on the roles women played as they accompanied their husbands overseas. Women in the Foreign Service were viewed as quasi-professional partners because they served as hostesses and engaged in community service. Their contributions were significant enough to be noted in their husbands' evaluations. The chapter highlights how the Foreign Service depended on these women as essential parts of diplomatic representation as America's international missions expanded.
