OpenAI is reportedly leading a $60 million funding round for Opal Camera Inc., a consumer electronics startup known for developing high-end webcams. Among the returning investors are Founders Fund and Kindred Ventures, who are also expected to participate in this Series B round.

Opal Camera’s flagship product is the Tadpole, a $149 webcam that attaches to laptop monitors. Despite its small size, the Tadpole is capable of recording videos at a resolution of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels, a sharpness typically seen only in more expensive webcams. Users can fine-tune their webcam settings using a companion app called Composer, which allows for adjustments in lighting and other configurations.

Post-funding, Opal will continue producing webcams but will also allocate resources towards developing AI-powered devices aimed at creative consumers. These new products are expected to integrate OpenAI technology, including possibly OpenAI’s image and video generation models. Opal has prior experience in this area, having previously released the C1 webcam that used machine learning for video optimization and effects like background blurring.

The C1 webcam is powered by Intel’s Movidius Myriad X Vision chip, featuring a specialized module called the Neural Compute Engine, which is optimized for running AI models. This chip is complemented by 16 customizable cores that primarily run computer vision models but can be adapted for other neural networks. This background implies that Opal is well-equipped to transition into more AI-enhanced consumer devices.

Outside of consumer electronics, OpenAI has shown a broader interest in AI hardware. Recently, the company has entered into discussions with Broadcom to develop a custom AI chip. OpenAI has also recruited engineers with experience working on Google’s TPU machine learning accelerators to support this initiative, emphasizing its commitment to advancing AI capabilities.

OpenAI's investment in Opal reflects a strategic effort to embed its AI technologies into a broader range of consumer devices. This could catalyze new developments in how consumers interact with AI technology, making advanced functionalities more accessible. For businesses, staying updated with these advancements is crucial as it reveals emerging trends in AI applications.
