Artificial Intelligence (AI) has facilitated an extraordinary archaeological breakthrough in Peru's Nazca Desert, where researchers have uncovered 303 previously unknown geoglyphs — ancient symbols formed on the ground by moving stones or gravel. These newly discovered geoglyphs nearly double the number of known symbols in the region, shedding new light on the ancient Nazca culture that dates back some 2,000 years.

    Archaeologists, led by Professor Masato Sakai from Japan's Yamagata University, accomplished this discovery by training an AI model with high-resolution images of existing geoglyphs. This collaboration also included researchers from IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center. The AI model, designed to detect potential geoglyph sites, suggested 47,000 potential locations through image analysis. From these, the researchers screened 1,309 candidates, ultimately 'ground truthing' 303 figurative geoglyphs between September 2022 and February 2023 using foot surveys and drone imagery.

      The utilization of AI in archaeology has revolutionized the field by significantly accelerating the rate of discoveries. Before applying AI, an average of 19 geoglyphs were discovered annually from 2000 to 2020 through remote high-resolution imaging. However, AI's application in this latest research has enabled a leap in efficiency, promising extensive future contributions to archaeological exploration globally.

        The newly discovered geoglyphs include a variety of designs such as birds, plants, spiders, human-like figures with headdresses, and even an orca wielding a knife. These symbols, etched into the desert terrain about 50 kilometers inland from Peru's south coast and situated 500 meters above sea level, have remained preserved due to the region's dry, less populated conditions.

          Despite the AI model being a ‘game changer,’ it presented challenges. The limited number of images used for training the model, typically, in contrast to the tens of thousands usually required, meant that the precision of the AI wasn't perfect. Nevertheless, it proved invaluable in reducing the labor needed to focus on high-potential sites, allowing archaeologists to dedicate more effort to fieldwork.

            Interestingly, the study revealed that smaller, figurative geoglyphs weren't easily identified as their larger counterparts, primarily due to their size. Figurative symbols usually measure around 9 meters in length, whereas line-type symbols can extend up to 90 meters, making the latter more accessible via aerial surveys. This differentiation points to the nuanced complexity in geoglyph identification and classification.

              The implications of discovering such a significant number of geoglyphs extend beyond archaeology. These findings potentially offer new insights into the cultural and religious practices of the Nazca people. Hypotheses suggest these symbols might have formed part of sacred pilgrimages, served astronomical or calendrical functions, or even played roles in irrigation and communication. The grouping and differing types of these geoglyphs hint at a broader, yet-to-be-deciphered interconnected purpose.

                One noteworthy aspect of this discovery is how AI has complemented human expertise rather than replacing it. While AI models pointed to possible locations, final validation and detailed analysis were carried out by human archaeologists. This collaboration underscores AI's role as a powerful tool that augments human cognition and expertise, rather than diminishing it.

                  The research has unveiled more than just geoglyphs; it highlighted ancient pathways likely used by the Nazca people to view these symbols. The survey identified smaller geoglyphs along winding trails, while larger symbols were near more extensive straight lines and trapezoids. These pathways could indicate the geoglyphs were not just for static observation but integrated into movement and possibly ceremonial activities.

                    The success of the AI-assisted research in the Nazca Desert could herald a new era for archaeology, where advanced technology plays a crucial role in uncovering and understanding ancient cultures.
