CNN Sues Perplexity AI, Alleging Mass Copyright Infringement
CNN filed a lawsuit against Perplexity AI in New York federal court, accusing the AI search company of unlawfully copying and distributing thousands of CNN stories, videos, and images without permission. The case joins a growing wave of publisher lawsuits against AI companies over content use.
The Lawsuit
CNN filed a federal lawsuit against Perplexity AI on Thursday, alleging the AI search company unlawfully copied and distributed thousands of the network's news stories, videos, and images, according to Reuters. The complaint, filed in the Southern District of New York, claims Perplexity produces "identical or substantially similar" content that competes directly with CNN's journalism.
"CNN's lawsuit stands for the proposition that Perplexity, a company valued at tens of billions of dollars, should not be able to steal from entities that create the original content Perplexity exploits," the Warner Bros.-owned news organization said in a statement, CNN reported. CNN is seeking monetary damages and a court order blocking Perplexity from further use of its content.
Perplexity's chief communications officer Jesse Dwyer responded tersely: "You can't copyright facts," according to NPR. The company has used similar arguments in its defense against other publisher lawsuits. Dwyer's statement was reported by NPR.

A Growing Legal Front
The CNN lawsuit is part of a widening legal assault on Perplexity from major publishers. The New York Times, Dow Jones (parent of the Wall Street Journal), the New York Post, the Chicago Tribune, Encyclopedia Britannica, Merriam‑Webster, and the Japanese media company Yomiuri Shimbun have all filed similar suits against the company in the past two years, Reuters reported. Reddit has also sued Perplexity over data scraping for AI training.
Earlier this year, Perplexity responded to the Times and Tribune suits by arguing that attempts "to stop this novel technology by monopolizing facts will founder on bedrock principles of intellectual property law that have consistently permitted innovative technologies like Perplexity to exist,".2 The company maintains that summarizing publicly available information does not violate copyright.
The Licensing Divide
The lawsuit reveals a fundamental split in the news industry's approach to AI. CNN said it "actively embraces the opportunities AI creates" and has multiple commercial partnerships, including a publicly reported deal with Meta last December, per.2 The network said it sought to negotiate a licensing deal with Perplexity last year but the two sides did not reach an agreement.
Several publishers have struck deals with Perplexity during the same period, including Gannett, TIME, Le Monde, and Der Spiegel, suggesting the company is willing to pay for content access when terms align. CNN's position: "if they refuse to do that, as Perplexity has so far refused to do, they will have to pay through legal damages. There is no free option,".2

The case highlights a critical tension in AI search products. Perplexity's core value proposition is answering user questions by synthesizing information from across the web, but the more it directly competes with the publishers whose content it relies on, the harder the legal argument for fair use becomes.
