Google is currently testing an innovative new “Ask Photos” feature, which enhances the way users can interact with their photo libraries. Initially previewed in May, this feature is beginning to roll out to select Google Labs users in the US. The “Ask Photos” feature allows users to ask questions about their photos, such as “Where did we camp last time we went to Yosemite?” or “What did we eat at the hotel in Stanley?” The responses are generated using Google's Gemini AI models, which analyze the content in the photos and pull up relevant images to answer the questions.

This new functionality promises not only to make it easier for users to locate specific images but also to help them complete various tasks effortlessly. For instance, users can ask “Ask Photos” to summarize activities from a recent vacation or choose the best pictures of their family to create a shared album. Those interested in trying out the feature can join a waitlist on Google's website.

Google is also enhancing the traditional photo search experience. While users can still use what is now called “classic search,” which is the current method of finding images, they will now have the option to search using natural language. Queries such as “Alice and me laughing” or “Kayaking on a lake surrounded by mountains” are enabled. The search results can be sorted by date or relevance, making it easier for users to find the exact photos they are looking for. This natural language search feature is available in English on Android and iOS, with more language support expected in the coming weeks.

In anticipation of these updates, Google Photos has replaced the Library tab with a new Collection page designed to facilitate easier access to all photos and videos. This change aims to streamline user experience further, enabling users to navigate their photo collections more efficiently. The combination of these innovations is setting a new standard for photo management applications, leveraging advanced AI to provide more intuitive and powerful tools for users.
