One in Five GPs Turn to AI Tools Like ChatGPT for Daily Tasks, Survey Reveals

A recent survey highlighted in the BMJ Health and Care Informatics journal has revealed that one‑fifth of general practitioners (GPs) are incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT in their daily tasks. The survey covered 1,006 GPs, inquiring about their use of various AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, Bing AI, and Google's Gemini. The study found that these AI tools are being utilized for a variety of tasks, from generating documentation post‑patient appointments to suggesting potential diagnoses and treatment options.

According to the survey, almost 33% of the GPs who use AI tools do so to create documentation following patient interactions. Additionally, 28% have employed these tools to explore alternative diagnoses, and 25% use them for suggesting treatment plans. Researchers note that these tools are particularly beneficial for administrative tasks, reducing the workload and potentially aiding in clinical decision‑making.

Despite the evident benefits, the survey raised significant concerns regarding patient privacy and information security. The researchers pointed out that there is ambiguity about how internet companies manage the data gathered through generative AI tools. She cautioned healthcare professionals to use AI ethically and be aware of data protection guidelines to mitigate these risks.
