            • 03:30 - 04:00 taught you the sorts of things you pursued under her guidance this is another very long very convoluted story I will try to make it short uh in 2011 I was sort of hiding in China without a Visa I wasn't supposed to be there I was keeping very lowkey not even my friends knew I was there because IID left the country for a while and come back on a Visa That was supposed to have been cancelled I was just doing odd jobs to make money while I waited to go back to Chinese medicine school I was taking a year off uh to recover from peritan I
            • 04:00 - 04:30 um it was a good time actually I spent a lot of time doing martial arts and because I couldn't let most of my friends know I was around I was afraid somebody would Spill the Beans uh it made me spend a lot of time alone which I I used a lot of that time cultivating reading books working on my Chinese and so on and so forth um and at some point uh I once my cover was kind of blown and I figured it was late enough that I could um not not keep hiding for fear of my univers University canceling my Visa I
            • 04:30 - 05:00 was volunteering at a at a martial arts school it's actually run by reang student chongyang in Shanghai uh and I was just volunteering to help them put subtitles on some videos they had made um and the proprius of this um martial arts studio SL now it's a Chinese medicine clinic as well as well as a they call it traditional culture school um told me that her Taiwanese astrology teacher was going to be in town Al okay I'll go listen um and then this Buddhist
            • 05:00 - 05:30 monk approached me in the break and said I'm looking for you I've come down from my Mountain because I'm seeking you to take care of a task and I love this part of the story because it sounds so pompous and uh and and um improbable and most likely yet another one of those white boy went to Asia came back and made a bunch of stories lies uh but I was actually his plan B I only found this out much later it was he had come off the mountain looking for another guy and failed to convince him to get into
            • 05:30 - 06:00 this uh plot the other guy's called Brian McMahon he's a he's quite a respected acupuncturist um with a web pre presence so this can all be confirmed he rejected this budhist pun flat out like no man um and I kind of had nothing better to do and I got roped into this crazy scheme to help out the Wayward Son about 18 or 19 years old he kind of run away from home from a very wealthy family that had made big bucks in the um
            • 06:00 - 06:30 liquor business bio in specific very strong Chinese uh distilled Spirit which I I actually like a lot of people foreigners absolutely Lo this stuff um and this uh young man had kind of broken with his family and was suffering from some pretty severe uh mental afflictions and had the Chinese Med medical systems mental health um options like many countries are pretty uh scary and limited and he had
            • 06:30 - 07:00 been through a number of Psychiatry uh situations in Shanghai including with foreign doctors and hadn't had luck and his parents were at the wit's end and they asked me because their son had grown up in international schools would I be willing to try to befriend him but pretending that this was all serendipitous I mean this is really if if I were a psychiatrist or doctor this is very unethical on the other hand it was kind of like his family was at wit's end this monk
            • 07:00 - 07:30 had tried some Chinese medicine doctors had tried they'd even kidnapped him at some point and sent him to kind of a private boot camp thing which just made the situation worse and I agreed and I started going to visit the hotel where the the guy was living um he he rose generally at 10 or 11: p.m. um and he was he was very far gone uh with mental mental afflictions maybe spiritual AFF afflictions and all I could do was my best was to I try to encourage him to
            • 07:30 - 08:00 get outside get some sun eat some proper food rather than just one bowl of instant noodles in a Gatorade once a day was about all he was consuming uh I don't want to go into too many details just in case anybody ever puts it together who this is I don't want to reveal everything about him but I was a little bit afraid of the young man at first until I realized he was harmless and after months of trying to get through to him I really felt I was at a loss but his father uh just kept having you know his father was very much like no this is going to help this is going
            • 08:00 - 08:30 to help at least there's one person in his life who's talking to him and after several months of this one day I had returned to medical school at that point um in Shanghai this is before I transferred to the school in Beijing uh I get a phone call from his father one evening and he's like I need you to go to the hotel where my son lives tonight and I was like no I have a test tomorrow or something like that and he like just begging me begging me I'm like look I can't do it and and finally I was just like what is the big deal why tonight his yesterday was like his day before yesterday he's been the same for a month
            • 08:30 - 09:00 I'm sure fine if I don't see him tonight and he says no no no one of the managers of one of my distilleries in G in jilan province which is a long way from Shanghai he had distilleries all over China had uh told him that there was a DST nun of high high accomplishment and great compassion who was going to do a ritual for him because it was going to be the the sort of Buddhist birthday of the Wang the bhis in trans I believe
            • 09:00 - 09:30 it'sa who is said to rescue Souls from hell and this kind of shows the way in which in Chinese religion Buddhism and DSM are very mixed together of course there are some da who would say why would you pray that dang strange your Dallas but generally speaking there's a lot more I don't know ecumenical or eclectic would be the right word so his father kind of brow beat me into going um and I went and S sitting in a hallway out of his son's hotel room expecting
            • 09:30 - 10:00 nothing kind of just like at least I'm getting paid sort of attitude and his son comes out and he's got like light in his eyes he walks straight towards me sits down slaps me on the knee and this was a a kid who up till then like getting him to brush his teeth was sometimes like a 30 minute like he just absolutely had no oomph no life energy no I mean he he was very depressed tell you himself not only did he not necessarily want to be alive he felt that he was already dead I think he was
            • 10:00 - 10:30 living in a very dissociated State and so for this guy to come out with spring in his step shocked me sits down next to me he's like Matas I have to tell you something and then we always spoke in English um he he preferred not to speak Chinese um I said oh what what I'm really kind of shocked you want to tell me something um and he's like I've decided that I this precious human body and this precious human life and I can't waste it if I ever want to get better I got to start getting up when the Sun rises I can't be sleeping till 10: p.m. I I got to stop filling my stomach with
            • 10:30 - 11:00 junk I got to eat proper food and bare minimum I should go for a walk every day and I should start exercising this is the only way I'm ever going to have any chance of turning my life around and I'm sitting there like so happy because I've been tell telling him to do all this stuff for months now no no effect and I was like oh who who gave you this idea waiting and expecting him to you know for him to thank me I'm like waiting for it you know and he's he's like looks at me like I'm an idiot he's like it's my idea like are you serious
            • 11:00 - 11:30 man um and anyway like similar things happened a couple of times when his father would tell me you got to get to the hotel tonight they're doing a big ritual up there it's going to help my son I was extremely skeptical to the point of thinking this was ludicrous originally even though I have an interest in spirituality that goes back several years before that it still the notion that people provinces away in China's far Northeast near the border with Korea would be able to bang on some
            • 11:30 - 12:00 you know wooden fish and drums and bells and chant some words and it would affect this guy remotely um but it kept happening and so finally I booked a ticket up to visit the monastery and in fact what's interesting is like after telling that story it's like oh well did she let you know when I met her did I she levitate towards me on a cloud and tell me I was the one or or that she was the one who no it was actually what was really striking was just how the temple was kind of remote a little bit ramshackle very quiet very
            • 12:00 - 12:30 peaceful and the people were just super down to earth and felt kind of like not quite grandmotherly you know I think abis sort of age-wise a bit older than my mom like older in between my mom and my grandmother's Generations but that sort of just like welcome home you look too skinny you should eat sort of attitude coupled
            • 12:30 - 13:00 with very profound insights into Buddhist and da teachings very clearly based on an entire lifetime of meditation um oh and in the back room of their kitchen they also had a mummified corpse who was epis Leo's master who passed away seated and sort of desiccated um so there was a bit of I guess magic and mystery as well but um that yeah that's that was a bit of
            • 13:00 - 13:30 down to earth a bit of out there mixed together yeah that's fascinating and so what was the training with her what did it entail uh she taught me nothing at first um she was just pleased to know that I meditated and did Jan Jong and um uh let's see about eight or nine months later I traveled to Gan to visit for a week and abis L just kept saying stay for another week stay for another week and it turned
            • 13:30 - 14:00 into three weeks uh plus another week in the city where I was uh helping out the young man I was just I just mentioned I eventually was able to convince him almost fooled him to spend some time in the monastery uh so he could be closer to abis Leo and everybody just felt that this might be sort of good for his his energy field so to speak um and and he stayed for months and he eventually I mean he really made a pretty full recovery and ended up going to college years later it took a long time um and
            • 14:00 - 14:30 I've kind of fallen out of touch but an incredible story and and an incredible effort on his part too it's not like the dsts just wave a magic wand and that's it I mean it's a he has a lot of put on a lot um but anyway that that summer abis Leo got a a fellow who's kind of um a Layman but living full-time in a monastery uh to help out so that I could have meals twice a day in my room um and
            • 14:30 - 15:00 this allowed me to meditate for six hours in twoh hour blocks every day uninterrupted for three whole weeks uh the rest of the time I was free to wander around in the woods or take meals Outdoors practice martial arts chat with people um but every day for six hours in these three two hour blocks I did sit and I hadn't received a single teaching from abis though is just trying to sit still and uh I nearly went I didn't nearly go crazy it was very very
            • 15:00 - 15:30 challenging like by the last session at the end of the three weeks I was so ready to leave I could barely stay seated alone in my room it was just like the energy was just like oh my God this is been um an amazing but very very hard experience and you know no one there's that energy I've been in one going of a passing the retreat there's that energy that comes when you're in a room full of people and there's an lished sitter at
            • 15:30 - 16:00 the front of the room and there's a very different energy when you're alone in a Cell um I guess perhaps abis L was kind of observing me and uh I think it was about two years after that she finally gave me actual meditation instructions I I forly became her disciple at some point and then a winter or two after that I think it was 2015 um she transmitted meditation instruction to me formally and I've been practicing with
            • 16:00 - 16:30 those ever since and they're very simple they are very very simple meditation instructions um as as you would expect from somebody who's refers to the her teachings as the W the great th W it is really um very very very simple are those instructions something you can share in this context I a solemn vow not to talk about them I apologize so probably very annoying no
            • 16:30 - 17:00 no quality necessary at all very interesting indeed are you able to talk about your uh experiences or the outcome if you like or the results the fruits of following these particular instructions or training under this ABS I have had all manner of interesting bells and whistles internal physical Sensations maybe ches Sensations sometimes in the dantean sometimes in the spine
            • 17:00 - 17:30 maybe the governor Meridian area um but interestingly like both from my own experience as well as from things that you see in books and that other D practitioners constantly remind is that you just don't get caught up in them and I was very caught up in them I was in Chinese medicine school I wanted to be able to feel all my meridians and my acup points and close my eyes and see them and my organs with my eyes shut I had actually had some experiences like
            • 17:30 - 18:00 that in my teams uh with meditation and those were very good I guess in one sense that they you know lit a certain fuse or you know pushed certain dominoes down that went chasing in that direction but also that became a strong uh attachment and a fantasy of wanting these glimmers that I had had to become stable abilities um and it took a long time to gradually let that aspect of my my psychology sort of dissolve I guess
            • 18:00 - 18:30 um and I don't think I've reached any sort of plateau where I have something worth talking about where yeah I mean like I could sit here just make a list of every wild Chi experience I've had but I really don't think they're that important to be honest and I think the real thing as boring as it is is
            • 18:30 - 19:00 becoming aware of your own awareness um developing a certain inner quietude that gives you space to not be as reactive a person in your relationships uh as well as when You Face Elation and tribulation these sorts of thousands of spiritual books have them and those are the pages we skip over trying to get to the twoy parts probably right um sorry you were hoping DM was more
            • 19:00 - 19:30 exciting than Buddhism came to the wrong guy yeah well speaking of the juicy Parts they apparently juicy Parts anyway although I think what you just said is very juicy indeed you mentioned this uh Power that can come City Power maybe we might call it that uh that can come Clairvoyance clar audience ritual power power over Spirits Etc sort of thing healing uh all different things of course Chinese Arts are famous as are
            • 19:30 - 20:00 the IND indic ones for these kinds of powers uh on the internet there are many videos of people setting paper on fire and doing things like that in the old stories there are also many examples I wonder how in the particular types of DSM you've been exposed to I wonder how these particular powers are viewed are they seen as something that naturally arise from as as one becomes more advanced or are they uh as I've heard elsewhere things that can be specifically cultivated for example
            • 20:00 - 20:30 doing a certain set of exercises to cultivate a certain type of capacity um how are these viewed in the types of dim that you've been exposed to I think a lot of that stuff to be honest is heavily influenced by Chinese martial arts novels um which are not a new phenomenon they have hundreds of years of history I mean if you go back to the Ming Dynasty a quote unquote martial arts novel might only be three pages long if you but you know these short stories I I studied one last year um you know there's they're not that much different from your average
            • 20:30 - 21:00 kung fu movie up today or or whatever John clab fland I guess John clad vanm doesn't really do magic but you know um avatar the Last air bender right um and uh by which I mean to say I've noticed something which is that in DST certain D circles both in China and in English speaking world and in person as well as in print and online in all of those Realms you can encounter
            • 21:00 - 21:30 certain people who are like oh dosm can learn lead to all sorts of um spiritual cities and Powers but you have to not be sidetracked by them but by the way here's a whole list of them right and then when you press people like well where's the guy who can actually do that it's either oh he's on a mountain or in reclusion he doesn't like to see people but he's my master and I'm not at his level yet but my one like spiritual elder brother wants saw him shoot flame out of his tongue and you know I'm going

            • 33:00 - 33:30 also a very accomplished poet uh she was accomplished D ritual Master as well as um internal Alchemy practitioner she was invited at certain point by song s Dynasty Emperor Hong to actually spend some time in the Imperial Palace as a as a teacher of alchemy and she left behind a text for him I believe um which is called I think like anyway it is a poetic um short text on the essentials
            • 33:30 - 34:00 of meditation and it's clear if you look at the text from this era that there was already a shared vocabulary uh it's it's very hard to know and I've talked to some Taiwanese Scholars about this who've been researching for years just how many people were practicing it when exactly it came into Vogue um but all those early texts are very very difficult to read and because they're so heavily Laden in symbolism and because some of the teachings are kept uh quite secret and

            • 47:00 - 47:30 Spirit of the rest of this commentary and I I and eventually after a year of working with this text I just was like I have got to get to the bottom of this question and I realized that that passage was also included in the writings of a later internal Alchemist who was involved in publishing and that therefore might have been reinserted in and it was it also shows up in a Chinese medicine text that uh was WR written in Korea back when Korea was using the Chinese writing system uh a long long
