      Overview

Starting with sanitization and preparation, giving a full bed bath involves gathering and organizing supplies like washcloths, towels, and fresh clothing. The caregiver introduces themselves, checks with the resident to ensure they're comfortable, and provides for their privacy by adjusting the bed and side rails.

The bathing process involves using clean washcloths and water to gently clean the residentโ€™s face, body, and especially sensitive areas without causing irritation. Extra care is taken to inspect the skin for any signs of irritation, while communication is maintained throughout to ensure the resident's comfort and temperature preference.

Ending the process, the caregiver ensures the resident is clean, dry, and dressed in desired attire. The bath concludes with a focus on disposals and sanitization where used linens and materials are collected and cleaned, ensuring everything is ready for next use. The caregiver reports any skin issues and offers optional comforts like lotion or a massage.

            Chapters

            • 00:00 - 01:00: Intro and Preparation The chapter focuses on the initial steps and preparation required for performing a full bed bath for a resident. It emphasizes the importance of gathering necessary supplies, which include four washcloths, two towels, and a clean gown (unless the resident will be dressing in their clothes afterward). The process begins with sanitizing hands, collecting these linens from the clean utility located outside the room, and practicing proper etiquette by knocking on the door before entering.
            • 01:00 - 02:00: Starting the Bed Bath The chapter 'Starting the Bed Bath' begins with a CNA named Myra introducing herself to the patient, Lee, in a considerate and professional manner. She emphasizes the importance of hand hygiene by washing her hands before beginning any procedure. Myra checks with Lee to ensure he is ready to start his day, indicating respect for the patient's comfort and readiness. She proceeds by safeguarding the patient's privacy, a crucial step in patient care. Additionally, Myra raises the side rail on the opposite side of the bed from where she is working, to ensure Lee's safety during the procedure. Preparation for washing the patient's back involves gently turning him onto his side, demonstrating thorough care and attention to patient safety and comfort.
            • 02:00 - 04:00: Upper Body Bed Bath In this chapter, the process of giving an upper body bed bath is discussed. The caregiver, Leah, informs the patient about adjusting the bed to a more comfortable height for her to work effectively and puts on gloves to begin the procedure.
            • 04:00 - 06:00: Lower Body Bed Bath The chapter begins by describing the initial steps of preparing for a lower body bed bath. It mentions starting the process by involving the patient, Lee, in checking the water temperature either by using his hand or a washcloth. The preparer ensures that all four washcloths are placed in the water, indicating readiness to proceed further with the bath.
            • 06:00 - 09:00: Perineal Care and Back Bath In this chapter, the focus is on perineal and back care for residents. The process begins by bathing the face similarly to a partial bed bath. It is important to start with wiping from the inside of the eyes outwards, ensuring to use a cloth without soap to avoid eye irritation, followed by gently patting the face dry.
            • 09:00 - 12:00: Finishing Up In the chapter titled 'Finishing Up,' the narrative likely revolves around a medical or caretaking setting, emphasizing the procedure for changing a patient's gown without causing discomfort or exposure. Lee is directed to place a towel under a patient's arm to keep the bed dry while removing the dirty gown. The process is done thoughtfully, keeping the patient covered and comfortable, ensuring they remain warm and unexposed during the change. The chapter might highlight the compassion and care required in such routines.

            Full Bed Bath Transcription

            • 00:00 - 00:30 to perform a full bed bath I would gather my supplies first linens are typically outside of the room so I'd sanitize my hands and go to the clean utility and get four washcloths two towels and a clean gown unless the resident were going to be putting their clothes on did I knock on their door I
            • 00:30 - 01:00 would wash my hands say good morning Lee I'm Myra I'm your CNA for today are you ready to get up and then I would provide for privacy I'm going to raise the side rail on the side of the bed that I am not working on to wash his back we'll have to have him lay on his side
            • 01:00 - 01:30 Leah I'm going to raise your bed up so it's a little easier for me to work if that's okay I'm gonna put my gloves on
            • 01:30 - 02:00 the full bed bath will start the same way at the partial bed bath did I'll ask Lee to test the water either by placing his hand in the basin or what in a washcloth and having them check the temperature I can put all four washcloths into the water
            • 02:00 - 02:30 you can put a dry towel and the resident if you'd like to begin and wash the face the same way as the partial bed bath starting inside of the eyes and changing my cloth and washing the rest of the face no soap on that washcloth so we don't irritate his eyes and gently pat dry does everything feel
            • 02:30 - 03:00 okay Lee I would place the towel underneath his arm to keep the bed dry remove the dirty gown from that arm keep them covered let me know if you're getting cold
            • 03:00 - 03:30 take a washcloth get soap all over that washcloth wash the arm just like we did in the partial bath getting in between the fingers of the hand and now this time I would wash the entire chest because it's a full bed bath and I would do that underneath
            • 03:30 - 04:00 to keep them warm and then also keeping the covers off of their body so they don't get wet and I'll leave that soapy washcloth on the side my basin so we don't get soap in the rinse water and I would rinse the chest first since we're holding up those Linens and I can set that there dry the chest off with this towel that I have underneath the arm
            • 04:00 - 04:30 so everything feel like it's dry we want to make sure we get under any abdominal folds or skin folds breast Folds so we avoid that moisture there that might cause a skin irritation now rinse the arm and since this doesn't have soap on it it can go back
            • 04:30 - 05:00 into the basin we're going to Pat that arm dry and being careful to get any skin folds or creases okay does that all feel okay Lee all right I'm going to cover you back up now I'm going to move to the lower part of the body so just exposing the leg
            • 05:00 - 05:30 towel under the leg I'll take my soapy washcloth now if this is getting a little bit cold I can bring it to the sink and warm it up again I don't want to put it back in the Basin because that will get soap into our rinse water I'll reapply some soap and then I'll wash the leg
            • 05:30 - 06:00 if the resin is mobile enough you can do the back of the legs here again getting in between the toes foot that soapy washcloth on the side of the basin and then we'll rinse that leg this is staying warm enough
            • 06:00 - 06:30 I'm sure we get in between the toes again no soap on this so it can go back in the basin pat dry I'm sure there's no moisture and the skin creases if the resident is diabetic you want to be very careful about looking in between the toes sort of more susceptible to infection there
            • 06:30 - 07:00 covered back up and take that towel out I would repeat the same on the other half of the body and then before I put them on their back I would perform perineal care you can watch the other video on perineal care to see how that's performed but I would do the front side now and then I would throw those washcloths into the linen bag after I wash and rinse and dry the perineal area in the front
            • 07:00 - 07:30 and I would change my gloves sanitize get new gloves for doing the back side all right well you know I'm going to wash your back so I'm going to have you scoot over towards me I'm going to help you with the lift sheet I have the side rail up there for you to grab onto so I have the lift sheet I'm going to
            • 07:30 - 08:00 have you scoot towards me on three one two three and make sure your arm is out here so we don't rely on that okay we're going to turn it onto your left side one two three I'm doing okay I'm going to adjust your pillow so your face isn't caught there keep it covered up and I'll take my second towel
            • 08:00 - 08:30 lay that down on the bed okay take our new washcloth and then we'll wash the entire back we're going to keep his bottom covered
            • 08:30 - 09:00 as long as we can and then get way underneath on that side making sure that we get all the skin clean on the back side I washed the back of his legs when he was laying on his back but if your resident is mobile enough he could wash the back of their legs at this point and then you can perform the backside perineal care again refer to that video but once I've done backside perineal
            • 09:00 - 09:30 care I'm going to throw that into the base or to the linen bag and then I'll take the rinse washcloth again while I'm bathing I'm always looking for any reddened areas that need to be reported to the nurse I rinse the back of the legs if I needed to and then do the rinse on the pericare and then make sure everything's dry
            • 09:30 - 10:00 all right would you like any lotion on your back Lee not today okay I will put that in the linen bag so my hands are dirty because I just finished Perry care so I'm going to let him roll onto his back and make sure he's comfortable just for the minute and then I'm going to take my dirty gloves off and sanitize my hands
            • 10:00 - 10:30 so at this point I would change his gown or put on clothes whatever he prefers and then I will position him back in bed comfortably I'll get my dirty Linens off of the bed would offer lotion and if I have time a back massage okay let's adjust your pillow here
            • 10:30 - 11:00 do you feel comfortably okay lower the bed make sure the bed is locked foreign
            • 11:00 - 11:30 give you your call light here lower the side rail okay open up our curtains okay anything else I can get for you Lee all right we'll see you later so I would take my dirty Linens put them in the hamper and then bring my supplies
            • 11:30 - 12:00 to the sink to wash out and then report any skin conditions to the nurse
