Overview
The video begins with the creator sharing his recent experience of completing Google's new hiring assessment, emphasizing that it's an innovative way to evaluate candidates based on their workplace actions and reactions. The assessment is organized around seven core topics, making candidates reflect on aspects like Integrity, Ethics, and Cross-Team Collaboration. These diverse categories provide a multifaceted insight into how applicants might naturally operate within a company.
Next, the video dives into specific examples from each category, discussing the nuances within questions. The creator points out that questions may be phrased differently but aim to assess the same behavior aspects, underlining the importance of consistent responses. Itβs a test of authenticity rather than the ability to select the 'right' answer. As applicants navigate these themes, they're encouraged to candidly reflect their true professional habits rather than guessing what Google seeks.
Finally, the creator wraps up with a broader view of the entire Google interview process, linking the assessment as a pivotal first step. He shares optimism about his potential progress and offers insights into how this structured evaluation fits within the larger context of his career aspirations. As a self-taught software engineer, his journey portrays an encouraging path for others walking a similar road.
Chapters
00:00 - 00:30: Introduction and Motivation The chapter titled 'Introduction and Motivation' begins with a YouTuber sharing their recent experience with the Google hiring assessment, completed about an hour prior. This is their second time going through Google's interview process, the first being in 2019 when the assessment wasn't available. The YouTuber highlights a lack of available content for candidates to understand the assessment and expresses a desire to fill this gap. The Google hiring assessment is designed to evaluate the tendencies and behaviors of candidates based on their current workplace actions.
00:30 - 01:00: Assessment Topics Overview The chapter provides an overview of assessment topics that are grouped into seven categories based on observed trends. It highlights the topic of Integrity, mentioning that it includes statements about doing the right thing when unobserved and adhering to company policies. The chapter notes that questions should ideally be answered with strong agreement, emphasizing the importance of integrity as reflected in variously framed questions.
01:00 - 02:00: Integrity and Consistency This chapter discusses the concept of integrity and consistency. It explores the idea of doing what is right even when no one is watching. It highlights the importance of aligning one's internal beliefs with outward actions to maintain consistency. The chapter distinguishes between integrity and ethics, suggesting that integrity is related to internal honesty, while ethics involves external actions, such as reporting others' misconduct when they don't follow guidelines.
02:00 - 02:30: Ethics in the Workplace The chapter discusses the importance of ethics in the workplace, particularly the role of accountability. It emphasizes the necessity of holding others accountable to follow company policy and highlights the importance of addressing unethical behavior when observed. The discussion suggests a gray area in determining when to call out unethical behavior, balancing the responsibility to report with the nuances of workplace dynamics.
02:30 - 03:30: Cross Team Collaboration The chapter "Cross Team Collaboration" discusses the balance between enforcing rules and policies in the workplace without being overbearing. It emphasizes the importance of adhering to workplace guidelines while also allowing flexibility so as not to alienate or micromanage team members. The exact application of rules should consider the work environment and the people involved, aiming for a collaborative rather than a strictly supervisory approach.
03:30 - 04:30: Autonomy and Self-Reliance The chapter titled 'Autonomy and Self-Reliance' focuses on the theme of cross-team collaboration. It highlights the role of facilitation in bringing together interdisciplinary teams to collaborate. The emphasis is placed on the personality-driven nature of collaboration, where some individuals naturally take on the role of initiators in fostering team collaborations. It acknowledges different approaches to collaboration such as solving specific problems collaboratively but not necessarily initiating collaborations for new projects or facilitating planned collaborations like Brain Trusts between different teams.
04:30 - 05:30: Problem Solving Skills This chapter discusses the importance of problem-solving skills, emphasizing the ability to host meetings with the right participants to ensure progress in the right direction. It is noted as a subjective skill. Another key skill highlighted is 'responsible autonomy', where the individual is able to work independently, especially with ambiguous tasks, showcasing self-reliance and task completion.
05:30 - 06:30: Organizational Skills The chapter on 'Organizational Skills' discusses the necessity for individuals to be capable of working independently on complex and not clearly defined tasks. While some individuals may need more help than others, the emphasis is placed on being able to know when to seek assistance without being overly reliant on others to complete challenging tasks. It highlights the balance between self-sufficiency and seeking help to overcome obstacles. Additionally, problem-solving skills are mentioned as an important aspect, suggesting that organizational skills encompass both the ability to work autonomously and collaborate effectively with others when needed.
06:30 - 07:30: Reliability This chapter discusses problem-solving with a focus on identifying root causes. It highlights the challenge of solving problems without knowing the root cause and emphasizes the need to identify the problem's cause before attempting to solve it. This concept is illustrated through the example of how the same underlying question or statement can be presented in different ways but essentially convey the same meaning.
07:30 - 08:30: Conclusion and Advice The conclusion and advice section emphasizes the importance of identifying the root cause of a problem before proceeding with solutions. Although it is highlighted that resolving an issue without knowing the root cause can be challenging, it is also noted that one should not be entirely stalled in addressing issues even if the root cause is not clear. The advice leans towards balancing thorough problem identification with practical steps towards a resolution.
How to Pass the New Google Hiring Assessment in 2025! Transcription
00:00 - 00:30 what's going on YouTube I just completed the Google hiring assessment about an hour ago this is my second interview process at Google and my first one was back in 2019 where the Google hiring assessment wasn't available and I'm actually learning that there's not too much content available to candidates to understand what the assessment is about so I'm going to make this video to go over that in detail so the Google hiring assessment is made to evaluate the Tendencies and behaviors of candidates based off of how they currently act in the workplace today there are question
00:30 - 01:00 questions that I've divided into seven different topics um and these are not formal this is just like the trends that I've noticed after completing the assessment I want to do as quickly as possible so the first topic Integrity it includes statements such as I do what is right when nobody is watching and other statements such as I complete tasks while following my company's policies um questions like these should be answered as a strongly agree like out of Hope but they're asking again they're asking the questions multiple different ways so for example that first question I do what is
01:00 - 01:30 right when nobody is watching another way to ask the same exact question or present the same exact statement is to say when nobody is watching I do what is right and if you respond to the first one as strongly agree and then respond to the next one as neutral there may be an inconsistency that could be flagged negatively all right for the second topic ethics this is different from Integrity because I consider Integrity to be more of an internal honesty whereas ethics is more external um so this covers things such as reporting when others are not following guidelines
01:30 - 02:00 and also um just being holding others accountable so the first one is I hold others accountable to follow company policy the second statement is if I notice someone conducting unethical Behavior I call it out now this is a bit of a great area for me because obviously like if you notice something wrong you should call it out but at the end the same vein they'll ask questions uh more about are you a person that makes sure others are following the
02:00 - 02:30 rules I think that that's more how do you put it that's more unnecessary so you shouldn't be the person walking around your workpl with the handbook saying like hey you should be loging in as of so and so a time I think that there there's a great area and a line to not be crossed to make sure that you're following the rules but also not being overbearing to make sure that others are also following the same policies all right the third topic is where'd it go oh the Third
02:30 - 03:00 topic is cross team collaboration and a sample of this is I facilitate collaboration across interdisciplinary teams another one is I bring people together for chances to collaborate and again this is another one of those great areas and it's very much personality based um me personally I always collaborate if I have like a problem but I don't go out of my way to make sure that other teams are collaborating with each other for new initiatives for example like I won't host a a Brain Trust between two different teams just
03:00 - 03:30 for the sake of hosting it usually it's to solve a problem or to make sure that things are moving in the right direction with the people that need to be involved so this is again this is 100% subjective um the fourth one is responsible autonomy or you just categorize it as autonomy this is your ability to work on your own without external influence from the team so some of these statements are I am comfortable with ambiguous tasks another one is I can compl compl difficult tasks on my
03:30 - 04:00 own and again both of these should be as strongly agree but it is subjective to each individual person some people need more help than others but if I were to guess I would think that Google's looking for people that are able to work on their own are very complicated not clearly defined task without much um assistance from other teammates and you should know when you should reach for help to get unblocked but at the same time you shouldn't be dependent on others to complete difficult tasks number five is problem solving skills and this is not necessarily just your
04:00 - 04:30 ability to solve problems but how do you solve problems so one of the statements that are presented is it is difficult to solve a problem without knowing the root cause and the second one is I identify the cause of a problem before solving it and this is a perfect example of how they're asking the same question two different ways or presenting the same statement two different ways the first one um is difficult to solve a problem without knowing the root cause is the same as identify the cause of a problem before solving it because you're identifying the the root cause and
04:30 - 05:00 they're just looking for inconsistency there and I think that if I had to guess you should be identifying the root cause of a problem no matter your discipline um before moving forward but one of the great areas of these types of statements was um if the root cause of a problem has not been identified it is hard to solve it and I think that for me is more of a a neutral and I say that because um you don't necessarily have to know the root you shouldn't be blocked by resolving an issue if you can't identify
05:00 - 05:30 the root cause you should work on how to get to the root cause and if you can't identify the root cause in a timely manner then try to figure out how you can stop the bleeding for lack a better terminology the next one is organizational skills and this one is more about um creating and establishing structure in your work environment so one of the statements that are presented is I create structure at work very St straightforward the other one is people come to me to create structure for the first one I do agree
05:30 - 06:00 like you should have structure in how you complete your work and and problems that you have to prioritize I think that there should be structure there but in the second one um people come to me to create structure I don't think that I'm a person personally I'm not a person that people would come to to ask like how to structure their day or how to structure a certain problem um because of my organizational skills that's just something that I do for myself the seventh and final topic is reliability and the one that I highlighted is I help others when they come to me for assistance and again this should should be a strongly agree but again I don't
06:00 - 06:30 know if people are comfortable with helping others if they're not necessarily comfortable in their own discipline so um just answer honestly that's that's the theme of this entire assessment is just to answer honestly based off of how you currently act at work and be careful about answering based off of how you think they want you to answer because it will be flushed out the way that they're asking these questions is pretty is pretty intense I think I've counted about 5 to 10 variations of each question type um at least each core question so for example
06:30 - 07:00 that first one I do what is right when nobody is watching I must have answered that question about seven different times be consistent and just focus on how you currently work and if you're fit you'll get a response in one to two days and if you're not then you probably won't all right to close this out um the Google hiring assessment again is a way to evaluate the Tendencies and behaviors of candidates in the workplace and it is something that is required from all candidates so regardless of whether or not you're applying to a technical role it's something that you will have to complete all right so this is the first of I
07:00 - 07:30 think five or so steps in the interview process if I pass the Google hiring assessment that I just completed um I'll know within the next one to two days and I think the next steps are to complete a technical screening which is a 45 minute uh technical interview with an engineer to go over a coding problem probably regarding data structures and algorithms and then if I'm approved for that I have a soft team match where I am basically they take my background and they try to identify a team that will be willing to
07:30 - 08:00 take me on if I pass through the formal interview Loop then the next step is to go through the formal interview Loop which is one jam-packed interview day uh consisting of five four to five separate interviews um covering data structures and algorithms assistance design and overall compatibility compatibility with Google um and I've done this once before back in 2019 but this time around I believe I am a lot more skilled so we'll see how this goes
08:00 - 08:30 I'll be sharing my experience uh interviewing at Google from start to finish and after that I'm just going to go talk about the front lines of being a self-taught software engineer in Tech so welcome to self-taught in Tech and I'll see you in the next one
