June 2024 Resident Update with Storylines Executive VP of Ship Operations, Dr. Paul Read. Transcription
00:00 - 00:30 [Music] hello and welcome to June 2024 resident update hard to believe we're halfway through the year we hope that your summer is going fantastic so far I'm Katie I come in here every month and we give you announcements updates we typically have guest speakers and it's all for you our residents to keep you up to date on what's going on here at storylines well it's definitely been a very very busy month we released all of our sales agreements and if you haven't
00:30 - 01:00 by chance received yours then make sure and contact us cuz we have released those you probably received text calls emails so enough uh little touch points there to make sure that you've received your package now if you have any questions at all about the contracts you can email compliance story lines.com our incredible contracts administrator administrator lady Mendez will answer any questions that you have besides these updates the best place to stay updated is to keep keep an eye on our
01:00 - 01:30 resident portal now we're going to have more and more uploads there so in between these updates you can go to the portal and just keep an eye on what's going on at storylines before we get started I just want to say stick around for another segment of Meet the team it's always so much fun to find out who is behind everything that's going on here at story lines and we have a wonderful interview with another teammate coming up so this month we have returning Dr Paul Reed he is the man managing director of Gallen Marine now
01:30 - 02:00 you've probably seen his name if you haven't you can go to the uh Team page on the website and we've had a couple interviews with him before so we have recordings in the portal he is like I said the managing director of gam Marine he's also storylines executive VP of ship operations he has over 25 years experience in ship building he is a chartered Naval architect and Marine engineer with Comprehensive experience in project management engineering design ship construction and more he is
02:00 - 02:30 managing just the small little project story lines he has he is our new build construction project engineer and manager he does it all and he has a fantastic team there in Croatia we're very excited to have him back Paul thank you so much for being here I know just how busy you are and it's the end of your day it's good to see you again how are you today I'm good very good thanks yes wonderful wonderful well you've been here before everybody knows you they know your name but let's just for those
02:30 - 03:00 that are new to the community please introduce yourself how long have you been with story lines and just your current yeah so uh my name's or Reed I'm a naval architect and re engineer um and I'm working for story lines as the Executive Vice President of ship construction and ship operations um I've been with storylines now four years I think it is yeah four years um and I'm I'm in charge of everything to to do with the ship
03:00 - 03:30 construction and the technical side of that and the a ship operations and bringing the shipping through service just a small little job there well we're really excited because you've been in Croatia of course for quite some time kind of been borrowing offices and working in the in the yard and all that but now we're expanding that and we're going to be making permanent offices or we're in the process of doing that so tell me a little bit about that and how exciting is it how many people are with you how many team members I want to hear it all
03:30 - 04:00 we've been coming to to um Croatia now for some 18 months on and off we've been coming backwards and forwards uh with small team that's been developing the initial design and now we've set up a permanent site office here in the shipyard and we have now got on site G Marine um a team of five people and we've also got um someof story lines operations team here as well and both teams are working together toel the
04:00 - 04:30 design further so the next stage of the design which is the basic design and detail design that will then follow through into the construction stage and G Marine will be building up their site team as they develop through the design until we got a big site team ready for construction um the operations team led by Milan is uh are developing the design from the operations site and they're also on site doing the procurement for the startup of the vessel and they'll also bring on the crew eventually when
04:30 - 05:00 we get to that stage well I'm really looking forward to having I mean a few of these um teammates are on our page already because they've been working with you for some time um but we'll be doing a little bit of interviewing here and there and I'm looking forward to like doing some one-on-one so our community can meet all of these really important people that are on your team and on our team um so and and and I'm actually very excited as you know I'm going to be over there in a couple of months and so maybe we'll do some live interviews just just kind of little hence here we'll just throw out some carrots for you all because I know that
05:00 - 05:30 you know having something live is so much so much fun and of course I can't wait to be there with you so um well let's talk about that like the different um departments and expertise of your team so well I heard procurement um and operations and then are there other different departments that are all coming together now uh yeah departments is a bit of a it makes it sound like it's very large I mean each each team member has a discipline that they are covering so we've got someone who's dealing with the architectural side and and the interior
05:30 - 06:00 liaison with tilberg design of Sweden who we're doing interior design so we have a liais on there on our team we have someone who's doing the machinery and piping systems design and then we have someone doing the electrical systems design we have a naval architect on the team who's doing the structural design stability and also the safety systems on board so and then we have overall site manager and we have myself who's I'm in control of the whole thing so
06:00 - 06:30 that and my my background is multidisciplin so I've got Machinery Marine engineering and also Naval architecture so we we've got a diverse group of very experienced experts it's so incredible you know my background is completely different and Aviation and blah blah blah and since I've been here now for over three years which is crazy um just learning and watching from the sidelines and being in the meetings and hearing all of the technical everything that goes into this
06:30 - 07:00 whole project is so interesting and so much more involved than anyone would ever imagine it is and we're kind of laughing that off like oh just well let's talk about like a typical day for you guys right now like you know I'm sure you meet up in the morning grab your Cofe and then what happens yeah so um every day is different actually at the moment because we're we're developing uh the procedures that we're going to use to carry on the the plan approval we're working with the
07:00 - 07:30 and their subcontractors to get the basic design package started uh and we're trying to draw into that um all the interior design work that we're going to have to do as well through through tilberg so at the moment it's more about coordinating we're having a number of meetings every day to try and bring together all the different aspects of the design from all the different disciplines and work out all the drawings that we're going to have to produce because at the moment we've only got around about 70 plans which have an
07:30 - 08:00 overall there there there sort of an overview of the design that's going to have to be broken down into around about thousand drawings which will be just for the basic design and then those will go further well there'll be thousands of drawings after that which will be for the workshop drawings um so to to actually organize how we're going to do that how the shipyard going to do that how they're going to bring their subcontractors in and also the suppliers because within that design process we also have to contact the the suppliers of the
08:00 - 08:30 machinery and equipment or the main Machinery anyway so that they are giving their inputs into to the design as well so there's a there's a lot of different aspects and we have to meet up about all these different processes and and meet with all different teams within the yard so we have to meet with in the yard the procurement team the uh basic design team and then they have split up into all the different disciplines within the basic design team we meet up with the project manager every day um and then we have all the commercial side as well so
08:30 - 09:00 we meeting with the commercial people within the yard as well so there's the lots of different aspects and it's not as busy as it going to get oh yeah yeah we we know this is just the the beginning in many ways even though it seems like it's the middle because we've been here for so many years and we're hearing up for this point right like there's several different starting lines you know throughout this project you know and we're just getting over the next one and the next one so let's talk about tilberg um you know we know they're the best in the bus business and I'm sure that's why
09:00 - 09:30 they were chosen so how do you guys I I heard a little bit about how you overlap they're not on site of course but you guys are in communication every week um how does that work when you overlap with what you're doing and and what they're doing well tilberg are designing the interior of the accommodation so they are doing all the the the arrangements and of course they they've been working with storylines for a number of years now they've created all the the plans
09:30 - 10:00 that we've got so far and all the renderings that we've seen but those have to be developed further we have to actually come to the point where we've got arrangements and we've got renderings and the complete design every single space within the ship on the residence areas so they're going to be going through the process of developing those designs to the point where they can give that to the shipyard who can then engineer that into the structural
10:00 - 10:30 side of the ship the piping the the ducting the drainage the cabling everything so um what we're doing is that part we're helping the shipyard develop that part of the the engineering side of it and bringing the two together helping them bring the two together because the tilberg tilberg design are employed by story lines to do the design work and the shipyard are doing the engineering so we need to bring those two together and that's what part of
10:30 - 11:00 what we're doing but we're also overseeing the design that Shipyard does and checking that they're complying with ship building standards that they're complying with technical specification that we've we've signed the contract for that they are complying with the the ship building regulations and we work alongside Lloyd's Register as well who are a class society and they will be assessing the plans at the same time as us and they'll be looking specifically at safety and regulations so we we've got a an engineering role and uh tilberg
11:00 - 11:30 have got just a design role and that that's how the two of us are different but we work we have to work completely integrated yeah yeah well it's been fun I've met a few people from the team throughout the couple of last couple of years and uh they couldn't be more lovely and it's just so interesting I I don't have a design bone in my body so I'm in awe of what they're doing and it's it's really incredible so let's talk about for you all the residents um how exciting this really is we know that we've been talking about a webcam we
11:30 - 12:00 will be getting that set up EV eventually um when the construction goes you know starts really getting underway um and and then we're also talking about doing some tours but not until the fall you know there's a lot going on right now we haven't completely set up everything we want it to be very pretty uh for our residents to come in and of course you can't just show up at the yard but you know we will be giving some dates and we'll be talking a little bit more about that the closer we get you know summer there's a few holidays and it's it's a little crazy right now but um for for the residents is there anything else that they should know um
12:00 - 12:30 that maybe I'm not thinking about um I think they should know that um although that we we don't see any steel cut yet it doesn't mean we haven't started the construction of the ship if you're like the first stage of construction of any ship and many times you'll see in the Press oh this ship started construction this but they haven't actually started cutting any steel they have to do a design first and although we've got to the point where we've done all the initial design which means we've been around the design spiral once we've now got to go right
12:30 - 13:00 round and get all the detail designed to the problem to the point where we have Workshop drawings that could be given to someone on the shop floor and they can build it um and that takes time but during this time we're going to be developing 3d full 3d um plans of the ship within uh the computer system of the shipyard we're going to be having model test so we're physically testing a model of the ship within a basin a model Basin um we going to be you're going to
13:00 - 13:30 see in the Press coming out where we're engaging with different types different um suppliers and you'll see many many big names as we as we engage those with the shipyard so it's going to be very exciting over the next few months as we start to engage these people and you'll see that the ship is really really coming ahead and we're really doing something and it's not just about the steel c when we cut steel yeah there's going to be some pieces of Steel lying around that cut up and eventually we'll have some blocks and then we'll start
13:30 - 14:00 putting them on the slip and then you'll see something on the webcam but that's that's quite a while away but there's a lot to do before a lot oh my gosh there's hundreds of thousands of steps before we even get to that so I know everyone talks about steel cutting ke laying you know but there so many things and and it's important for the residents I mean it's so exciting for you all the residents you know to know that you've been here through the very beginning and that you're actually part of this process and you it's it's very cool to watch this develop and come about so um
14:00 - 14:30 I know that this won't be the last time we talk I'm sure that they'll be C other other updates um I'm just thinking if there was anything else that we missed right now I know that we'll have some um during this recording we have some clips we have some video um I know that we'll be doing some interviews with some of your team our team um it'll be very exciting to see and meet the people behind the scenes uh such as yourself so thank you so much for being here today I know uh how busy you are no problem what
14:30 - 15:00 over it's a pleasure all right well I'll see you soon okay okay hang around for meet the team everybody and we'll be right back and we're back thank you so much to Dr Paul Reed that was so interesting and we're so excited that this is all coming together and now one of my favorite segments meet the team and this time is no exception I've no known this young man for quite some time I would say
15:00 - 15:30 today we have Tim Roberts he is our lead content writer and he is the one the master behind so many wonderful things I know you have read as residents and if you're new to the community go into the website look at the blogs look at all the crazy wonderful and exciting and creative things that Tim has written um I'm so excited I think I know Tim we've known other for over well about three
15:30 - 16:00 years now I would say but three years since um since you threw me in the deep end do I remember oh wait no no no we threw each other in the deepend it was good it thinkle swim it's the best way to Le yeah no we work really well together I I really enjoyed um but before I continue to talk I want everyone to hear from your own lips who you are and please introduce yourself um what you do and how long you've been with story LS it has been about three
16:00 - 16:30 years now uh 2001 I'm Tim Roberts the content writer originally from Australia but um I'm a bit nomadic these days uh moving around the world uh like many of us do love travel and that's what kind of attracted me to story lines in the in the first first place was that freedom and flexibility and Drew me in well and I I never really know where you are I always have to ask where are you
16:30 - 17:00 in the world today time that we have a meeting and how appropriate that you are um in the library um on on the MV narrative right now yeah this has been my go-to background for a few years now I tried some other ones but I always go back to the library it's very true I mean yeah I think if I was ever lucky enough to be on the ship uh that will be my hangout for sure that's what I'll be writing and reading and being a word node okay then I'll be headed over there to
17:00 - 17:30 visit you I'll have a glass of champagne of course because I'll be in the Champagne Bar where you are in the library that's typically where I'll be all right well I'll have the whiskey in the background there on the coffee table okay all right well I'm sure I know this background well we'll clink classes at some point so let's get into some fun stuff um you know we always know each other at work of course but I want to know a little bit more about you know what excites you after work what do you do um how do you spend your time what hobbies do you have when I'm not riding when I'm not working
17:30 - 18:00 I try and get up and move about because you know I sit down a lot uh riding so I love going for walks I live listen to audio books I always try and be not too far from the sea I Grow Up by the ocean like most Australians do um so that's really important for me I love swimming love swimming in the ocean I love floating love nature as well if I can um doing a hike um and more writing actually creative writing as well though yeah
18:00 - 18:30 yeah so I don't even really know where are you today I'm in zanah oh that's right that's right yeah yeah it's part of Tanzania it's off the coast an island of Tanzania H but it's almost like its own country but uh yeah I've been here for almost two months now and yeah I'll be here for the next four months um and yeah just settling into life here it's pretty chilled it's hot though yeah
18:30 - 19:00 with all of your travels what is I wouldn't say your well maybe your favorite what what is your where is your favorite place in the world that you've been well that's a tough one um but if I had to choose probably be Cape Town South Africa okay it ticks so many boxes like it's got have you been there no oh it's just beautiful you you got the table Mount so the mountains and the beaches so you kind of get the
19:00 - 19:30 best of both worlds yeah so you can go hiking and you literally you can you know if you worked in the CBD you can get to the like the mountains just there you can get to a world class hike in like 10 minutes yeah um great Beach is very cold though very cold water but it's kind of the cold water therapy can be good uh really good wine they've got a wine region right in the middle of the city uh they got pretty good food seen there as well they got the BR which
19:30 - 20:00 is like uh their version of a barbecue um and just yeah good culture the only downside is the crime though there's a bit of crime you got to keep your eye got to remain Vigilant of all the travels that you've been what is the The Culinary the cuisine that really strikes your fancy the most a love of Mexican but funnily enough the best Mexican I've had has been in so so
20:00 - 20:30 in you remember the restaurant no it was in LA I just I love bitos I think I just yeah we have a lot of Taco stands down here Tacos yeah yeah but um it was pretty good in Mexico as well but um yeah so Mexican I love and Japanese went to Japan to go and um the sushi from good sushi restaurants especially in Tokyo it it just melts in your mouth it's
20:30 - 21:00 amazing it's it's different kind of sushi than you probably get in the US or Australia um they got their chefs there like they go through like eight years of study to become a master uh sush chef and those knives I mean they could cut through a concrete door I mean they're so sharp oh yeah I Love Sushi yeah we'll have to hit the sushi bar at some point together that's for sure um what's your most daring or adventurous
21:00 - 21:30 activity that you've ever participated in I did Skydive uh that was pry yeah yeah that was years ago highly recommend doing that at least once in your life tandem skydive that is um so that was pretty adventurous did um oh bungee like a canyon swing it will probably be in in um in New Zealand in Queenstown which is like they put you in this
21:30 - 22:00 harness um and you kind of dangle out over the edge of a cliff and they don't tell you when they just hit this button and you just drop like a bungee jump and swing yeah and not just that the guy was like messing with me because he's a keyway and Aussies and K kind of you know love you know um mocking each other okay you ready set got W doing us oh no I'm not
22:00 - 22:30 kidding that's mean and then all of a sudden he'll just go D and I'll just go and then you just when you drop and then you just swing through the canyon now no that just sounds terrifying no I mean I I like flying airplanes but I like to stay in the airplane I don't like to jump out I don't want to jump off with just a little cord you know that could snap like no I'm that would D so you are a little bit more adventuresome than I thought so so tattoos no tattoos no
22:30 - 23:00 tattoos no um yeah I've thought about it you know there's got to be good reason for me to get a a ttoo yeah um and I have thought about it one again bringing up Japan when I was there that got this word called kaisen have you heard means continuous Improvement little bit every day yeah and I thought oh that's really cool get that but um and I was close to getting it but it's there's actually hardly anywhere to get
23:00 - 23:30 a tattoo in Japan because it's taboo because tattoos are um what I say they're related to the Yakuza yeah the Japanese mafia they so they don't have the same connotation there as they do in other parts of the world yeah yeah other languages besides that great accent that Australian accent that you have know any other languages it's almost like another language unfortunately no this has been my bucket list well yeah a little bit of
23:30 - 24:00 Spanish cuz I lived in remember I was in Columbia for three months I I picked up the basics there I was in Spain last year for another three months um but please don't ask me to say anything I got to the point where I can order food in a restaurant you know who was to be completely honest only like 15 20% Spanish at the most but yeah it's been something you know we're born with English and it's such it's the universal
24:00 - 24:30 language now so there's not as much as incentive for us to learn language but then I do so much travel and I made all these you know Europeans and then I three or four languages and I'm just feel D or embarrassed yet oh trust me I'm I'm the same and I've taken courses I just can't recall it like having conversations you have to immerse yourself to really get it down you know okay so speaking of that um 30 seconds of Fame all right this is where
24:30 - 25:00 you can just dream are you a singer are you a dancer are you a whatever you could be a musician an athlete an actor what would you be you know I did a lot of ads I'll have to send you on someday you'll laugh um and I kind of got TP typ casting doing commercials so it wasn't really satisfying me creatively I did a few TV shows but I thought that's what I wanted so back then the old M would go ah famous actor for sure but as of growing up but I kind of realized that
25:00 - 25:30 what I really wanted wasn't what I wanted anymore as I matured and went into my 30s and um really fell in love with writing so I'd have to say a famous writer if you could time travel what era would you visit yeah it would be going back to that like that movie Midnight in Paris be going back to the era of Hemingway and yeah yeah what was it 1920 1930s like in a speaky you know with your whiskey kind of just chilling yeah
25:30 - 26:00 you know those are those classic Silver Screen Stars hrey Boger Clark Gable uh Errol Flynn oh yeah yeah I could see that for sure um let's do a lightning round this is always really fun are you ready so you just don't think you just say one or the other uh movies or music movies okay cats or dogs dogs beach or mountains Beach yeah we wear you like the beach um adventure activities or
26:00 - 26:30 relaxing spa day adventure okay sweet or salty sweet Tech or nature what was the first one Tech like technology or nature Ah that's uh nature all right I these are really tough sunrise sunset sunset be invisible up I can't get up in that oh my gosh I'm up at 4:30 every day
26:30 - 27:00 um be invisible or able to fly fly so if you could share like some memorable experience like from your past that really shaped who you are today what would that be it would be my first solo trip abroad which again bringing up South Africa cap town when I there um and I lived in C town as my first solo trip abroad and I got a lot of growth person growth out of that I think
27:00 - 27:30 yeah yeah and that gave me the kind of the desire to become location independent and and see more of the world yeah well I think that that is probably that kind of wraps us up because you know it's interesting to throughout this whole theme it's like the people that we attract are the people that would be on the ship you're you know thirst for Travel and Adventure and that's what makes you such an amazing writer for storylines cuz you can actually put yourself into the position as a resident and traveling the
27:30 - 28:00 world I mean you're already there right like when you're writing it probably feels like you're already there kind of with the whole Community just already traveling and that's what makes you so good and again you all if you haven't read Tim's work um and by the way you've actually written a book too yes and the book is called uh goodbye office hello world of course it is that is so perfect goodbye office world started rotting before I worked at story lines actually but I
28:00 - 28:30 finished it in the early days of working for story lines I think we have a lot of entrepreneurs and remote workers and digital Nomads and all sorts of people that can really relate to your lifestyle and and what you love to do so well I'm sure you have a bunch of writing that you have to get to I really appreciate you coming in and chatting with me and your time it's always good to see you um you to Dy thanks for yeah thanks for the interview and putting me on the spot was good my pleasure all right we'll see you bye bye all right take it easy bye well
28:30 - 29:00 thanks again to Tim thank you so much for your time and thank you to Dr Paul Reed thank you to you all for coming every month and getting caught up with us on these updates and we'll see you next month bye-bye [Music]
