Overview
In Dr. Michael Damian's illuminating discourse, he addresses a pervasive issue among young men โ the 'Puer Aeternus.' This eternal child archetype is characterized by a reluctance to embrace adulthood, often manifesting through an engrossment with high philosophy, video games, and rich fantasy worlds. The Peter Pan syndrome, as it is sometimes called, keeps many from realizing their full potential.
Dr. Damian highlights how the correlation between the puer aeternus and the mother complex leads to young men clinging to comfort and pleasure rather than launching into real life. This attachment often results in escapism, where lofty philosophical ideas and spiritual pursuits substitute genuine life engagement, creating a facade of accomplishment.
To break free from these confines, Damian suggests embracing both the positive aspects of masculinity and femininity, as these qualities support constructive personal growth. By focusing energy on meaningful work and real-life interactions, young men can transition out of the fantasy world and build a sturdy foundation for a fulfilling, mature life.

It highlights the significance of psychological development and maturity in ensuring that a spiritual quest is not merely an act of escapism. The chapter points out that many seek escape through spiritual means due to a lack of personal development.
02:00 - 02:30: Ideals and Imbalance The chapter "Ideals and Imbalance" explores the theme of imbalance and underdevelopment in individuals, particularly in older adults, who become overly philosophical. This tendency towards extreme transcendent and nihilistic spiritual models often arises due to a lack of grounding or connection with the world.

Instead, it suggests that real enlightenment is an enriching experience well-documented by those who have truly attained it, offering genuine fulfillment and wisdom.
04:30 - 05:00: Skin in the Game for Spiritual teachings The chapter titled 'Skin in the Game for Spiritual teachings' discusses the prevalent patterns observed in individuals where there is a fixation on pleasure, comfort, and fantasy. 05:00 - 05:30: Marie Louise Von Franz on Puer Aeternus The chapter discusses the concept of 'Puer Aeternus,' characterized by an adult exhibiting childlike behaviors, dressing like a child, and living with parents. The parents often see them as good but needing help, which may include challenges and direction.
05:30 - 06:00: Work and Masculinity The chapter titled 'Work and Masculinity' discusses the challenges individuals face in life, particularly focusing on the limits that they encounter. It highlights how excessive indulgence in certain activities, like playing video games for extended periods, can contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety and affect personal relationships. The underlying theme suggests a connection between work ethic, lifestyle choices, and the traditional notions of masculinity.
06:00 - 06:30: Positivity in Masculinity and Femininity The chapter discusses the role of play and video games in life, focusing on their temporary enjoyment and challenges they present. Though video games offer an illusion of achievement, they should ideally be outgrown or played occasionally, aiding in maintaining a balance between escapism and real life.
06:30 - 07:00: Work as Cure and Final Thoughts The chapter discusses the importance of play in the development of children. It highlights how play is not merely an activity for amusement but a fundamental aspect of childhood that serves as a rehearsal for life. Through play, children learn, adapt, and practice various life scenarios. The chapter emphasizes that engaging in video games also serves as a form of playing, where strategies and actions are rehearsed, contributing to cognitive and social development.
The Problem of the Puer Aeternus - Young Men's Fantasy Life of High Philosophy, Video Games and Porn Transcription
00:00 - 00:30 hey there friends in some of my other videos i've mentioned the problem of the poer eternist the eternal child it's the peter pan archetype and i'm really seeing this so much in my psychotherapy practice and i am mentoring a number of young men who are struggling with this this issue and uh young women do too but i am more seeing young men so i will address my comments mainly to young men um
00:30 - 01:00 the puer eternis archetype what is it's having trouble getting getting launched into your real life taking your life seriously getting work done there's an attachment to pleasure and comfort and there's a there's a linkage to the the mother complex as we say in union psychology i really have to address this because so many um spiritual types
01:00 - 01:30 um are are having a kind of poer eternist problem they are uh well especially in young men they are very reflective and thoughtful and interested in spiritual ideas especially ideas of spiritual enlightenment and transcendence and all that and there is something real to that as i know myself uh having gone through the realization of consciousness and a
01:30 - 02:00 life-changing awakening that it was that is quite real the problem is when there is not enough uh psychological development and maturity in the personality this is going to make the whole spiritual quest a big farce because it's just an escapism and as i've said many who are seeking that kind of escape and who are caught in this lack this
02:00 - 02:30 uh imbalanced and undeveloped state they tend to attach to the more extreme transcendent and nihilistic even models of spirituality see what happens is they become very philosophical and this happens also to older men or women who lack uh feeling sometimes who lack grounding in the world where does the
02:30 - 03:00 life energy therefore go it goes upward into the head into very lofty ideas of of um spiritual awakening and enlightenment or oneness into concepts of world salvation and these are the energy there is flooding into the fantasies about reaching certain ideals and we we all need ideals we cannot live without ideals ideals come from the
03:00 - 03:30 archetypes there they live in our psyche so they are there for a reason but the problem is when so much of your life energy is going toward these ideals and these this intellectualism um it's both feelings and intellectual concepts working together to lift a person away from the actualities of their own psyche and
03:30 - 04:00 real life and into the this kind of fantasy imaginal world where although so much energy goes toward that nothing really happens and what happens for the pueri eternists or these extremely philosophical or spiritual types is that they will try to solve all their problems by just finding that great idea finding that that total awakening that's
04:00 - 04:30 going to resolve all the life issues for them it's going to fill them with love and make them into no one and make them empty and and free and of course uh that's not going to produce the real uh enlightenment that uh we know we know can many people have actually experienced that is incredibly enriching when it is
04:30 - 05:00 real so with this puery turnist pattern we see so much energy is stuck in pleasure comfort and fantasy and i have to say video games i have so many clients who are uh these young men coming in from age 20 to to 30 i play video games uh many hours a day oh i've limited it to four hours a day
05:00 - 05:30 you know and and and they're they're dressed like a little boy with cartoons cartoon socks and and and they're living at home with their parents and they always say oh my parents are so nice and so wonderful and the parent even writes to tell me oh he's really a good boy and he just needs help dealing with these things he's been through i think he needs a bit a bit of challenge a bit of uh direction
05:30 - 06:00 and and something hard to a little bit hard to come up against in his life some limits uh namely so always with the video games oh yeah well i play video games uh half the day and and you're wondering why you you feel depressed and you feel anxious and why you don't have a relationship perhaps
06:00 - 06:30 um video games are not life they they give you the illusion that you're you're uh getting something done you're overcoming challenges you're using your wits and i'm not against play uh play is important um video games can be okay if you would do them when you were younger and then outgrow them perhaps or just play them once in a while
06:30 - 07:00 but play children play why playing is the deepest task of childhood and playing to play is to learn and to rehearse for living and so we play um we play out scenarios and we're we're rehearsing for life and so when you're always in this play of video games you're you're rehearsing oh this strategy of doing this and that
07:00 - 07:30 but it's all virtual so what happens is nothing is really uh happening in your real psyche your real life nothing is really wrist you're staying in this virtual bubble of a fake reality and this has to stop and how is it that someone who is playing video so many video games each day can really think that they are going to
07:30 - 08:00 integrate and actualize the deepest spiritual teachings in the world uh how is that going to happen exactly you need to be in order to in order to become ready for consciousness you need to have skin in the game your psyche needs to be really involved in in life and taking your life seriously
08:00 - 08:30 and you're not going to be able to jump from this childish adolescent state of mind straight into some buddhahood or or christ-like consciousness just by taking in these teachings and figuring it all out as if that will give you the answer and let you leap over all of life without having to be in it so in her book puert
08:30 - 09:00 the problem of the pueri turnist jungian author marie luis von france a contemporary of carl jung she writes she writes about the rich fantasy life of the puerta and she says she talks about how the fantasies is is flowing into a rich fantasy life and it's not um there's no acceptance of life as it is or real engagement with life and so life just piles up in the fantasy
09:00 - 09:30 and it overgrows your real personality and kills you what does the where do with each day she says he dams up his inner life in actuality for instance he gets up at 10 30 a.m he hangs around till lunchtime with a cigarette in his mouth giving way to his emotions and fantasies perhaps by playing video games
09:30 - 10:00 in the afternoon he means to do some work but first goes out with his friends and then with a girl and the evening is spent in long discussion about the meaning of life he then goes to bed at one o'clock a.m and the next day is a repetition of the one before and in that way the capacity for life and the inner riches are wasted for they cannot get into something meaningful but slowly overgrow the real personality
10:00 - 10:30 so that the individual walks about in a cloud of fantasies fantasies which in themselves are interesting and full of rich possibilities full of unlived life so there was the issue there of work the per the power means to do some work but doesn't they often have a negative idea of work
10:30 - 11:00 a negative idea of adulthood often a negative the young men often have a negative idea about masculinity they become falsely feminine overly feminine you know trying to please women perhaps to appear very very uh sensitive to the feminine side of things and having a negative view on masculinity which should be
11:00 - 11:30 we should have embrace a positive masculinity because you need it there's a positive masculine and a positive feminine so often i see that in the puert eternas men that they they're rejecting they're alienated from their real masculinity which is a force for order in the world and structuring and getting something done now women have a masculine side too and
11:30 - 12:00 we all have both sides so we need the positive aspects of each side work is the cure getting into something productive and meaningful um that serves is a path of serving your fellow man and growing yourself and growing your talents and actualizing your talents and unless you get into this real life of taking your personality and your life
12:00 - 12:30 situation and relationships seriously all these lofty feelings and uh fantasies and spiritual longings they really come to nothing because you're building all this spiritual thought and idealism on a on a very uh flimsy foundation so i hope this helps some of you who are perhaps struck struggling with this archetype of the pueri turnus and i am
12:30 - 13:00 available to to mentor and help you through it should you feel called thank you
