Transfer planning is an essential aspect of a community college student's educational journey. At Hazard Community Technical College, this process is greatly supported by the University Center of the Mountains (UCM), which provides centralized resources. Students can access advising services, financial aid assistance, and transfer guides, helping them personalize their educational paths and ensuring the courses they take will count towards their future degrees.

In light of the importance of these processes, the workshop also emphasizes the need for early planning and utilizing provided advisory resources effectively. This ensures students not only meet the requirements of their associate degrees but also align their coursework with the university programs they wish to transfer into. The role of UCM’s partnerships with regional universities is critical, facilitating seamless transitions through established transfer agreements.

Moreover, the session highlights the complexities of financial aid, illustrating how different types of colleges have varying tuition and aid offerings. By working closely with transfer advisors and leveraging resources like UCM, students are better positioned to make informed decisions about their educational and financial futures. Ultimately, Hazard Community Technical College equips its students to navigate their academic careers with confidence and foresight.

            • 00:00 - 00:30 all right ladies and gentlemen I want to go ahead and start this Workshop to today uh to go over uh some aspects of transfer um why it's so important to community college students to understand how we are interconnected with our University Systems throughout the country primarily within the state of Kentucky
            • 00:30 - 01:00 so at this point what I'm going to do is I'm going to go through some PowerPoint slides that will address some of the topics and issues that we need to understand here at Hazard Community Technical College so that being the case let's go ahead and go to First slide um in this situation what we're talking about is we're talking about the the services that are provided at Hazard Community Technical College primarily
            • 01:00 - 01:30 with the University Center of the mountains uh the First Federal uh building will find the UCM on the first floor in the Suites uh 119 that's across the big uh auditory area the UCM has been in existence for quite some time uh in which the focus has been trying to help people pursue higher educ
            • 01:30 - 02:00 either in person or online by providing a centralized One-Stop location where they can get advising financial aid assistance scholarship searches as well as uh working with individuals from some of the community I mean the community or the regional or state universities so for example uh Morehead State and lindsy Wilson have offices within the UCM where
            • 02:00 - 02:30 their staff is there to assist you as you continue your education looking at potential educational opportunities through their colleges and universities again we talked about uh the fact that in today's world when we're dealing with over the 22 colleges that have agreements with kctcs and the community colleges we're talking about a
            • 02:30 - 03:00 lot of those being online secondary degrees beyond the associates thus bachelor's degree uh which then can lead on to Opportunities within the Master's uh in in particular areas but the COO offices assist people not only with admissions uh they also provide financial aid assistance scholarship searches to anyone that wishes to find those funds to help pay their way
            • 03:00 - 03:30 through school two areas of focus that we find also in the UCM is hctc uh advisors are available primarily in the areas of education and criminal justice with instructors advisors for those programs
            • 03:30 - 04:00 both of those are very strong transfer programs in which people then will transfer onto a fouryear school to continue their education either locally or online currently at this time we're really limited to the schools that offer education uh online but these this these individuals will provide you the best Rison for each of those schools knowing what classes would be required for for each school that you wish to continue
            • 04:00 - 04:30 education uh so when we talk about transfer there's a couple of areas of interest that we really need to focus our attention to because it's not just simply filling out an application and then you know finding somebody to roll you into your classes in transfer we have to take in consideration some schools have deadlines some schools have application
            • 04:30 - 05:00 fees some schools require transcripts and even occasionally for specific programs you may find a school that will ask for test scores uh as part of the admission process or scholarship opportunities so it's important to know what is the wishes of the schools that you're looking at as far as the process to go from today to the point you're enrolling in your classes and you're
            • 05:00 - 05:30 preparing to actually engage tuition cost and fees many times need to be understood amongst the schools in a little bit I'm going to talk more about the different types of colleges and how tuition rates can be uh greatly impacted by the nature of the school in which you appli to so understanding tuition costs and fees many times it's not uncommon to see students pay a little bit extra for online class classes to cover the
            • 05:30 - 06:00 technology fees of that Institution for many of us at the community college level because the tuition rates was so low it was not uncommon for students that met you know full P eligibility to not only have their tuition covered but also to have some additional money turned to them to cover incidentals like travel food and
            • 06:00 - 06:30 book costs and things of that nature at the University levels that's pretty much not an option you're going to see anymore tuition many times is going to be a little bit higher uh and there they're going to eat up a lot more of that potential financial aid from pal cap grants Kentucky higher end grants that is allocated to that school the tuition rates also have an impact on the
            • 06:30 - 07:00 amount of Aid that you may receive sometimes by the schools uh for example a Alice Lloyd might have a different index than a warhead State University for the distribution of Aid to the students so it's very important to work with a transfer advisor while you're at Hazard Community Technical College
            • 07:00 - 07:30 these are the people that uh will be able to assist you in regards to understanding each and everything that's necessary uh for them also understand that many universities by doing the application admission process within your first year of school here at has commun College will provide you and a transfer advisor that will assist you
            • 07:30 - 08:00 while you're contining your education the first and second year while you here at Hazard Community Technical College so there's possibilities for concurrent enrollment um and also advising to make sure that you go from like a two plus two situation that addresses exactly what's necessary that meets our degrees here and also the school you wish to go to so it's very important to think about
            • 08:00 - 08:30 the school that you want early because that's going to have a Major Impact especially as you're going into your second semester and making sure that those classes you pick will transfer into the program in which you wish to continue your education in Kentucky we have a thing called the Gen Ed transfer block you may or may not not know this but state
            • 08:30 - 09:00 universities in Kentucky pretty much have to take all the classes within your general education block as courses equivalent to what they offer so when people ask about well you know does it transfer the answer is yes however it doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to meet the requirements of a particular program that's why it's very
            • 09:00 - 09:30 important to work with our transfer advisors and that school's advisors to assure that you're taking the right section of the right course that will meet the needs to graduate at that fore institution the Jed block if I remember correctly it's 33 credit hours that has to address many areas of interest uh Humanities Arts science mathematics
            • 09:30 - 10:00 language communication these are all areas social sciences that have to have at least some course for in those areas within that transfer block so let's take a moment to talk about the schools on which we need to consider
            • 10:00 - 10:30 let's see so in Kentucky in Kentucky it's not uncommon if you do a general Google search many times private proprietary schools are the first schools that will show up in your search engine these schools spend a lot of money and a
            • 10:30 - 11:00 lot of effort and time to make sure that they are at the top of those search uh windows so for example if I Google Hazard and Comm Hazard Community Technical College there's no guarantee it's going to give me that link first it's going to give me some private link of some organization or school that want you to click on them first so you have to pay attention to what
            • 11:00 - 11:30 you're doing and understand that even though those proprietary schools may have the program you're interested in it may not be the cheapest or it may not be delivered in a way that works within your time schedule and also the possibility that those classes may not transfer to other colleges and universities further down the road so we'll talk about accreditation in just a
            • 11:30 - 12:00 bit so in reality what Kentucky has is state universities and the community college system the Morehead the Easterns the muray Western Northern UK those are all state universities that are partially funded by state revenue in those situations many times you'll see students run into issues of instate versus out ofate tuition due to
            • 12:00 - 12:30 the fact that an out of state students um family had not kind of funded higher education in Kentucky so we have to take a look at residency sometimes to determine the tuition rates for certain schools uh that you may be applying to in addition to that we have the for-profit I mean the nonprofit uh colleges within Kentucky many of these
            • 12:30 - 13:00 are your primary private schools within Kentucky uh your Alice Lloyds uh upik many of these are private schools in partnership in Kentucky to provide higher education opportunities their tuition sometimes can be uh extremely more expensive others work out deals to where for example you University of the cumberland's online tuition rate is much
            • 13:00 - 13:30 lower than what a student on campus would pay for tuition so again just exploring each School understanding what they can do to help lower the cost is very important because they want you just as much as any of the public universities they want you to consider their option so it's not uncommon in Eastern Kentucky we have a lot of students that will transfer to Lindsay Wilson um university of Cumberlands
            • 13:30 - 14:00 Union College uh pipel Alice Lloyd these are all fairly close schools to where an individual can continue their education either in the classroom setting or online the next group we'll talk about with a little bit of reservation in the poor profit colleges and universities throughout the current
            • 14:00 - 14:30 history we look back we have seen that some of these schools are very aggressive and their recruiting they're very engaged in um maybe not sharing a clear message of what they offer and the employability that you have once you complete those degrees uh perfect example would be IT Tech that popped up you know in the 90s one they don't exist today and their
            • 14:30 - 15:00 classes did not transfer anywhere so when you talk about for profit schools you have to ask the question right off the top of the bat are they accredited by the Department of Education in Kentucky in the South States we're in a regional organization called Sachs uh and what it is it's a crediting uh body that looks at the curriculum and
            • 15:00 - 15:30 delivery of programs to students with with certain standards that have to be met so community colleges technical campuses uh universities public universities are all sacks accredited so if you're looking at a school within our region the first question you ask is are you saxs accredited if they're from somewhere else then you have to ask if they're part of that they're accredited by that
            • 15:30 - 16:00 Region's accrediting body so accreditation has a big impact on the transferability of classes from one school to another don't want you to go halfway through a program at one school and then decide to go somewhere else and those courses don't transfer the most common one I've seen through the years in our immediate area was pipeful at a school called the ntion
            • 16:00 - 16:30 um National College of Business and um reality is is for most universities none of their classes transferred now I know they're under a different name today but I can't pull it off top of my head but you have to be cautious sometimes to understand the accreditation that that can impact you know your progress as you continue your
            • 16:30 - 17:00 degree because accreditation is very very important and within each of these again you have to look at the comparison of tuition rates a state sponsored College like a you know a uh University of Kentucky or Morehead their tuition rates many times is going to be last then even the accredited private schools um for example transy and Center
            • 17:00 - 17:30 there are two schools that uh tuition is quite a bit higher but again look at their opportunities to provide you an additional financial aid that kind of lowers that cost to you also again many schools have their own scholarship programs grants work study opportunities that tries to bring the cost closer to what you would pay at a public Institution so investigate
            • 17:30 - 18:00 explore the schools that you're interested in and have a better understanding of exactly what they're asking from you because the key for me is to is to assure that you get your education at the lowest dollar invested as a counselor with ceoc our job is to assure that we get every nickel we can out of every source that we know of to address tuition cost
            • 18:00 - 18:30 and need of that student in that transfer setting oh let's see so now the UCM let's talk a little bit about the UCM how invested they are in their
            • 18:30 - 19:00 education the UCM uh just uh lost a great transfer advisor Helen bruny my wife just retired after 32 years at haszard Community College Howen was the guru behind a lot of the resources that you have today uh to the UCM in fact you can access many
            • 19:00 - 19:30 of those resources even from the web page so it's not like you have to come in we have degree check sheets we have transfer guides uh for many of the schools that have partnered with us in the UCM so for example if you're thinking about doing education through Morehead you can go and pull up a transferred check sheet for education at
            • 19:30 - 20:00 she we also have some of the others like Kentucky State um andity Cumberlands Lindsay Wilson Midway all of these are schools that are partnered with the UCM that want you to consider them as your next institution that you attend so it's important to know even as a freshman student what courses will transfer where to meet what requirements and what schools uh even if it does transfer we
            • 20:00 - 20:30 don't want it to go down as just an elective if we don't have to we also want to utilize the resources of the UCM to again look at things like financing your education so in reality what we're talking about is we're talking about setting up a time table in which you're going to be engaged in pursuing your education so you're in Year One basically this is this process where you
            • 20:30 - 21:00 learn what schools offer what programs this is the year that you learn what are the admission requirements for the schools this is the year that you learn the cost of that school that you want to consider going to and finally what kind of financial aid and assistance is there to fund your education that's all within the this first
            • 21:00 - 21:30 year that way there as you go into the second semester you start picking the classes that's going to meet your requirements at that four-year institution at the beginning of the second year in October that's usually when we start doing the actual admissions applications unless it's a school that allows concurrent enrollment or early enrollment we want to at least make sure that the app A's been complete if you're plan to living on campus we do housing
            • 21:30 - 22:00 the meal plans all that stuff we start in the fall term that way there we understand what kind of money is available to help pay for your education the fast was going to be done somewhere between October and December it's going to give us an s number student aid index number and that's going to give us a clue as to the eligibility we have for certain amounts
            • 22:00 - 22:30 of money help us go with the changes of the fast but coming uh it's also going to provide information to the school that you choose that tells them to consider throwing some of their scholarship money toward you to alleviate some of the burden of the cost of continuing your education so uh kind of excited about that so by the end of your second year as you're finishing your self suits of
            • 22:30 - 23:00 Arts your self supplied science or an AAS applied science degree with the Gen Ed block completed for training SP we know exactly everything that needs to be done in that transition when do you meet with an advisor from that school when do you roll in your classes is this something you're going to have to set up payment plan to spread the cost over a period of time
            • 23:00 - 23:30 is this something that we look to outside scholarships to cover some of the differen so there's a lot of things that can be engaged as a student even in the second half of your second year of your assus degree because the reality is is that in the end we want that transition from May to August to be smooth as possible and this is where people like me with Commonwealth Educational
            • 23:30 - 24:00 Opportunity Center uh Services help you the best we want to work with you as you continue your education we do financial aid we do scholarship searches we review fasta to make sure there's no errors as the new fasta comes out in December we understand there's going to be a lot of people with some questions so one of the things I want to ask you to do here at the end is sign up with our program let
            • 24:00 - 24:30 me help you as you continue your first or second year of school to make this smooth transition to the next level so ceoc wants you put us to work it's that simple we want to be able to provide those services that assures you have no questions or no obstacles that arise to stop you from continuing your education
            • 24:30 - 25:00 okay so normally I would ask for people ask questions at this time but since we don't have anybody in attendance let's talk a little bit about transfer as a hope why is transfer so important
            • 25:00 - 25:30 higher education is here to educate the workforce of Tomorrow currently we are in the middle of an exodus of 71 million baby boomers from the workforce last statistics I saw stated 10,000 people leave the workforce every day in the United
            • 25:30 - 26:00 States people all the time say they can't find nobody to go to work well you lose 10,000 people a day before even Co started it added up so we just don't have the same population that we did in fact without immigration of new citizens last year the United States would have had a negative grow in the overall population Nation think
            • 26:00 - 26:30 about that so one of the things we have to understand is that you are in the middle of a major transition with financial aid federal government at this point is about to roll out the new 20242 fasta application uh it's going to be different uh number of categories has went down but the number of questions
            • 26:30 - 27:00 overall has went up instead of the EFC number that we saw in the past year uh the saai index is going to be the new index how that impacts the amount of money each individual gets we don't know yet even you see Thursday last week in a training session that I attended I was informed that changes are still being made to the
            • 27:00 - 27:30 application but they are obligated to have it available to the public sometime in December so ceoc uh Kia schools have have basically went into overdrive to make sure that we can meet your needs as you're trying to navigate this brand new form that you've never seen before uh to assure that you you do it right

            • 28:00 - 28:30 off your education at the bachelor's degree level for a while students will say well I want to work for a little bit and then I'm going to go to school understand that if you make um you start making a good salary by waiting you could be impact on the amount of Aid that you can get in the future let's say for example you grad graduate in May this year you apply for financial aid for the
            • 28:30 - 29:00 2425 year it's going to basically use your income from two years ago if you take off a year and you work or two years in work whatever that new salary is you're bringing in could have a negative impact on the amount of Aid that you receive so we encourage students get it started
            • 29:00 - 29:30 you know take advantage of that lower income that you had to assure that you at least get fell and cap for a little bit longer as you continue your education at the next level because technically if you meet eligibility you can receive financial aid up to 90 hours a attempted at the Junior and senior
            • 29:30 - 30:00 level to complete a four-year degree other little things we also look at is all is the way that classes are offered when they're offered I don't know if you know it or not but there's some opportunities you can take a college course in two weeks God forbid but it some schools do it some have four-week classes five-week classes six
            • 30:00 - 30:30 week class there's so many different ways that classes are uh provided to individuals nowadays some schools with online programs work in cohorts some have different start and end dates so it's very important to understand exactly what you're signing up for when it begins each component of each course what's the obligations what's the necessary requirements what books and
            • 30:30 - 31:00 materials you need to have on hand at the very beginning because some of this goes very quickly I think you may have encountered already this year a few situations where you really thought maybe I should have took a 16we class instead of an eight we class who knows as a community college student we have to balance our education with our families our work
