Images 2.6: set edit complexity explicitly

By OpenTools Team · November 5, 2026

Omitted complexity defaults to high.

Quality and planning are separate controls

OpenAI’s November 4 launch adds complexity, a separate planning control, to Images 2.6. It recommends low for most edits.

The API guide says both Sunburst and Flare use high when complexity is omitted. quality controls rendering: a low‑quality request does not select low‑complexity planning. For a focused change, explicitly request low if following OpenAI’s recommendation. The guide cautions that higher planning can add latency and unwanted changes; it does not promise a better edit.

Choose the output before the endpoint

For SVG output, use /v1/images/generations with n=1. The result is static vector content; image edits cannot return it. GIF output works with generations or edits, and edits can take still references. Neither format supports streaming or partial images. GIF frame counts and dimensions must also fit the request’s pixel budget.

Availability is not parameter parity

OpenAI’s system card explicitly lists GIFs and photo markup in ChatGPT and the API, but SVG support in the API. That identifies feature locations; it does not establish that every API control is exposed in ChatGPT or Codex.

The guide mixes 2.5 examples with 2.6 sections. Check the model named in an example before copying it; these are documented controls, not OpenTools test results.
