Cartwheel Spins into the Future with $10M Boost for AI Animation

Cartwheel, an AI-driven animation startup founded by former OpenAI and Google talents, has secured a massive $10 million in funding to advance its innovative 3D animation platform. The browser-based tool revolutionizes the animation process using AI to create rigged 3D animations from simple text prompts or video clips. Accessible to both professionals and novices, Cartwheel integrates seamlessly with industry giants like Maya and Unreal Engine, aiming to democratize animation production. But what does this mean for the future of the animation industry?

Character Creator 5.2 separates a generated mesh from an animated character

By OpenTools Team

Reallusion’s October 29 update connects mesh generation, character wrapping and outfit preparation. A creator still needs to identify which asset the animator is receiving.

Name the asset at the handoff

Reallusion’s October 29 release says Character Creator 5.2 connects text/image‑to‑3D generation, humanoid‑to‑CC wrapping and wearable‑outfit preparation. It lists the update as available that day.

For a character artist and animator, the useful distinction is the deliverable. A concept mesh describes a shape. A character intended to move also needs a structure that supports that motion, while an outfit brings another set of questions about how it follows the body. Naming the stage makes the request more precise than asking for a character that merely looks finished.

Consider a hypothetical jacketed character needed for a greeting shot. The animator needs more than a convincing still image of the jacket. The handoff can identify the intended wave, the asset version and the clothing that must accompany the pose. These are requirements for that imagined shot, not a report of an output OpenTools produced.

Wrapping and clothing preparation remain different work

The official workflow page describes three wrapping stages: detecting points, aligning points and refining the mesh. Outfit preparation separately includes polygon reduction, mesh editing and skin‑weight adjustment.

For the greeting‑shot example, the artist can hand over the current character version together with the intended motion and note which stage still needs review. A question about the shape of the face is different from a question about the shoulder’s movement or the sleeve’s behavior. Preserving those distinctions helps the next person identify what they are being asked to evaluate.

The linked page describes the vendor’s workflow. It does not establish that a particular sculpt, garment or export will work in a reader’s production environment. OpenTools has not run a conversion, inspected skin weights or tested an animation.

Separate the update from cloud usage

Existing CC5 owners can update free and claim 500 AI Points; new purchases include an AI Cloud Starter plan, according to the announcement. Cloud services use credits.

A software‑update entitlement and capacity to request cloud generation are different parts of planning the work. Before assigning a batch of character assets, identify which account will perform it and which entitlement covers that part of the job. The announcement does not supply a per‑asset credit cost or establish unlimited generation. No purchase, credit claim or account activation was performed for this article.
