The control saves a browser preference; replies disclose a substituted level when a request is unsupported.
The preference and the reply
The October 30 v1.13 notes add a Thinking button beside the chat model picker. Off‑to‑High levels are available where the chosen model supports them; choices are remembered per model in this browser.
If a requested level is unavailable, the reply says which level was used. Models that always think identify that in the menu.
A saved preference records a request. It does not establish the level used for a particular answer.
Usage and product scope
The notes warn that higher levels consume usage faster, without giving exact per‑model budgets.
These notes concern useconsensus.ai, separate from the academic‑search service Consensus.app.
