Best AI SEO Tools: Compare Research, Content and AI Visibility

Start with the job you need to improve. Shortlist Surfer for editing and refreshing content, Frase for a connected research-to-publishing workflow, and Semrush for keyword research, competitor data and search tracking. Their plans measure different things: documents, articles, sites, keywords and AI prompts. A higher content score is useful feedback, but it does not prove higher Google rankings or more customers.

Choose the bottleneck before the tool

If your team already knows which pages to improve but struggles to produce a useful revision, start with an editing workflow. Surfer’s Content Editor and Auto-Optimize help review suggestions in the context of an article. If research, drafting, publishing and maintenance happen in disconnected places, Frase offers a connected content workflow with supported CMS publishing. If the missing input is keyword demand, competitor evidence or a reliable tracking portfolio, Semrush’s research and monitoring plans are a better starting point. These are workflow recommendations based on the reviewed product documentation, not a hands-on accuracy or speed ranking. A small business may only need one of these paths. An agency may combine them, but should identify which tool owns research, which owns edits and which measures outcomes before paying for overlapping features.

Surfer: match document limits and review controls

Surfer’s current pricing page lists Discovery, Standard, Pro and Peace of Mind alongside a separate AI Search Analytics offer and Enterprise. The displayed annual-billing cards show Discovery at a $49 monthly equivalent and Standard at $99. The plan help page says annual limits are granted in one yearly batch; monthly limits reset monthly and do not roll over. Do not read the 120 or 360 documents displayed on annual cards as a monthly quota. Discovery includes drafting and optimization guidance, but the Auto-Optimize documentation explicitly excludes Discovery. For eligible plans, Auto-Optimize generates suggestions in a side panel; you review them and save to apply. Usage can be consumed when at least one suggestion is generated even if you reject the changes. Decide how many drafts and refreshes you need, then separately check AI prompt coverage and daily versus weekly refresh. An unlimited label is subject to fair use, not permission to assume unlimited performance.

Frase: price the whole content workflow

Frase Starter lists one seat and one site, 10 articles and 50 audit pages each month. Professional lists three seats and five sites, 40 articles and 250 audit pages; Scale lists five seats and up to 10 domains, 100 articles and 1,000 audit pages. Month-to-month prices are $49, $129 and $299 respectively. The annual cards display $39, $103 and $239 monthly equivalents with a yearly commitment. The pricing page lists WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix publishing, plus FraseCMS. Treat hosting upgrades and additional seats as separate budget items. Publishing permissions deserve an explicit check: the pricing page says an agent can publish automatically when enabled, while Content Guard normally proposes a revision for approval. Start with an editorial review step until you have verified source quality, brand voice and the exact fields the integration changes. Keep AI Visibility monitoring separate from the feature that writes or republishes content.

Semrush: separate SEO research from AI-search tracking

Semrush’s current pricing page lists an SEO-only plan and the combined Starter, Pro+ and Advanced plans. SEO costs $139 month to month and includes five websites to monitor and 500 keywords tracked daily. Starter costs $199 month to month, also lists five websites and 500 tracked keywords, and adds AI visibility with 50 prompts tracked daily, one domain for AI brand performance and 300 AI visibility reports per day. Pro+ and Advanced increase limits and add capabilities. The page also lists paid user and reporting add-ons, so the base price is not necessarily the cost of a multi-person agency setup. Make a list of your sites, tracked keyword set, markets and AI prompts before picking a tier. A research suite can identify a topic or a technical issue; your team still needs to judge intent, write an accurate page and verify the release.

Measure search and AI visibility separately

An SEO content score, a tracked AI mention and a customer signup answer different questions. Use content scores to locate possible gaps, then inspect whether each suggestion improves the page for the reader. Use AI visibility tracking to understand which prompts and engines mention a brand; keep the prompt set and observation dates consistent. For commercial results, follow the path from an organic landing page to a meaningful action such as a vendor visit, trial request or purchase. Compare equal complete time windows and account for changes in topic demand, seasonality and publishing dates. The vendor descriptions establish what the tools offer; they do not establish a guaranteed ranking improvement. Record what changed on each page so a later review can separate an implementation problem from a page that simply needs more search exposure.

Run a small buyer trial before connecting everything

Choose one existing page with a clear buyer question and preserve the original. Ask each shortlisted tool to improve the same brief. Review the proposed facts, source links, headings, internal links and calls to action, then inspect the final draft outside the editor. Try a second example with an outdated product price or renamed feature to see whether the workflow catches it. Record credits or documents used, review time and what you had to correct. If using a CMS integration, test a draft or staging page first and verify that publication is under your control. After publishing an approved change, check its canonical URL, indexability, internal discovery links and conversion path. Start the later search review from the actual release date; a seven-day software trial is usually a workflow evaluation, not proof of durable rankings.

Common questions

Which AI SEO tool should a small team start with?

Choose based on the bottleneck: Surfer for content editing and refresh guidance, Frase for a connected content-production workflow, or Semrush for keyword research and tracking. Check the current plan limits against your actual sites, pages and users.

Does Surfer Discovery include Auto-Optimize?

No. The current Auto-Optimize help page excludes Discovery. Discovery provides drafting and optimization guidance; confirm the higher-plan features and current limits before subscribing.

Is a Surfer annual document allowance monthly?

No. The plan help page says annual limits are granted in a single yearly batch. The displayed 120- and 360-document annual cards should not be treated as monthly allowances.

Does Frase automatically publish every change?

Its pricing page describes optional agent auto-publishing, while Content Guard normally republishes a proposed revision after approval. Check the settings for the specific feature and CMS connection; leave an editorial review step in place until the workflow is validated.

Does the Semrush SEO-only plan include the same AI visibility as Starter?

No. The pricing page separates SEO-only from combined SEO + AI Search plans. Starter adds AI visibility limits, including tracked prompts and AI brand reporting.

Can an AI SEO tool guarantee rankings?

No ranking guarantee is established by the reviewed sources. A content score or AI mention is a diagnostic; evaluate search exposure, relevant traffic and meaningful customer actions separately.
