HeyGen vs Synthesia: Which AI Avatar Video Workflow Fits?

Choose HeyGen for a creator-focused avatar studio and flexible translation modes, or shortlist Synthesia when document-to-video production, learning content and interactive video are central. Both have free plans, but the allowances, credits and export rights differ. The comparison below uses current official documentation and separates documented features from questions to test in your own video.

Match the tool to the handoff

HeyGen's current pages describe an avatar video studio, custom and stock avatars, translation and credit-based plans. Synthesia describes script, PowerPoint, document, link and prompt inputs with avatars, voices and interactive video. Start with the actual handoff: a short social draft, a longer training video, document-to-video production or a translated version.

For a solo creator, compare the path from a short script to an editable avatar scene and the final download. HeyGen Creator lists 600 monthly credits, 1080p export and watermark removal at $29 month to month. Its Pro entry tier lists 1,000 credits and 4K at $49. For a training team, inspect document imports, review, reusable scenes and the learning-platform handoff. Synthesia documents PowerPoint and document inputs plus quizzes, calls to action and branching; verify the plan required for each feature. HeyGen also lists interactive video, SCORM export and LMS integrations on Business, so learning features alone do not establish an exclusive advantage for either product.

Free minutes are not interchangeable

HeyGen Free lists three videos per month up to one minute, while Synthesia Basic lists 1,200 credits usable for up to ten minutes. HeyGen lists a 720p sharing link and Synthesia describes Basic output as watermarked. A free draft does not establish comparable capacity or watermark-free commercial export.

Synthesia Starter is $29 billed monthly and adds downloads and logo removal while retaining 1,200 monthly credits. Creator is $89 billed monthly with 3,600 credits. The annual price display is a different commitment. HeyGen’s annual plan also allocates credits monthly, while eligible unused credits can accumulate until annual renewal. Confirm the exact checkout amount and reset rule before comparing an annual offer with a month-to-month subscription.

Budget lip sync and revisions explicitly

HeyGen lists Audio Only at 4 credits per minute, Speed at 6 with lip sync and Precision at 10 with lip sync. Synthesia’s paid self-serve dubbing rates are 25 credits per minute without lip sync or 50 with it. Its Basic plan uses 120 and 240 respectively. Standard Synthesia video generation consumes 120 credits per minute. Do not apply a paid dubbing rate to a free plan.

For a two-minute translation, the published HeyGen formulas imply 8, 12 or 20 credits depending on mode. Paid Synthesia dubbing implies 50 or 100; Basic implies 240 or 480. These are arithmetic examples, not a cross-platform cost ranking: the plans grant different credit amounts, and generation or later revisions may consume additional allowance. Inspect the project estimate before generating.

HeyGen describes Speed for simpler front-facing footage and Precision for more difficult angles, speaker changes and facial obstruction. Treat those as the provider’s intended use cases. Test a clip containing your actual camera angles, speaker changes, names and terminology rather than assuming the mode label proves better output.

Count the language and avatar you actually need

HeyGen lists 30+ free languages and 175+ languages and dialects on Creator. Synthesia lists 160+ languages and voices, with a separate dubbing matrix. Headline totals do not prove every locale, voice and avatar combination, so check the intended job before purchase.

Use a short script with a product name, a number and the pronunciation you need. Have a fluent reviewer check the translation, subtitles and spoken result. Check whether the chosen voice and avatar support that locale, and whether your plan lets the reviewer correct the transcript before regeneration. A large language count does not establish that every feature supports the same list. For a digital twin or voice clone, use a consenting speaker and follow the provider’s verification requirements.

Read the billing view and keep claims qualified

HeyGen documents monthly rollover for unused paid credits for one additional cycle and a different annual rule. Synthesia says credits reset each billing period with no accumulation. Confirm currency, taxes, promotion, renewal, credit reset and export rights at checkout. This comparison does not report hands-on quality, realism, speed or lip-sync accuracy.

Make the decision with a representative deliverable

Choose HeyGen first if your main job is recurring creator videos and you want to compare multiple translation modes within one credit plan. Shortlist Synthesia first if your starting materials are presentations or documents and the end product is structured learning or internal communication. These are workflow recommendations based on the documented products.

Before committing, create one short draft with an approved script and a permitted avatar, then make one real revision. Inspect the exported resolution and watermark, listen for pronunciation errors, check scene timing and confirm that someone else can review the draft. If the video must go into an LMS, test the required package or interactive behavior separately from an ordinary MP4. Record the credits used for the first generation and revision. The useful comparison is the work needed to deliver your actual video, including review and handoff.

Common questions

Which has the larger free video allowance?

The units differ. HeyGen Free lists 3 videos/month up to 1 minute each. Synthesia Basic lists 1,200 credits/month usable for up to 10 minutes of video. Compare the length and number of drafts you need and check watermark rules.

How do they charge for lip-sync translation?

HeyGen lists 4 credits/minute audio-only, 6 with Speed lip sync and 10 with Precision. Synthesia paid self-serve dubbing uses 25 without lip sync or 50 with it; Basic uses 120 or 240. Compare the allowance of the selected plan, not credit counts alone.

Which supports more languages?

HeyGen lists 30+ languages on Free and 175+ languages and dialects on Creator. Synthesia lists 160+ languages and voices. Verify the exact locale and avatar or voice combination before purchase.

Do credits roll over?

HeyGen says monthly unused credits can roll one additional billing cycle and annual allocations follow a different rule. Synthesia says credits reset each billing period without accumulation.

Which plan should I compare for training videos?

Compare the required document input, review workflow and learning-platform export. Synthesia documents document-to-video and interactive learning features; HeyGen Business lists interactive video, SCORM export and LMS integrations. Verify which plan covers the complete deliverable.
