            Chapters

            • 00:00 - 01:30: Introduction to the Four Dynamics The chapter 'Introduction to the Four Dynamics' begins with an overview of the four dynamics: spiritual, relational, experiential, and instructional. The narrator suggests envisioning these dynamics as part of a spiral, indicating that the exploration of these topics is iterative, revisiting each dynamic repeatedly to gain a deeper understanding. This approach parallels making a 'revolution' around these concepts, suggesting that while the themes may seem repetitive, each iteration offers a new perspective or insight.
            • 01:30 - 07:30: Paul's Transformation through the Four Dynamics In this chapter, the focus is on Paul's transformation, particularly through the understanding and application of the Four Dynamics. Initially, the concept of these dynamics is introduced in a theoretical sense. As the chapter progresses, there's a shift towards the practical application of these dynamics. The intent is to move from understanding the theory to applying it in real-life situations. The chapter includes exercises designed for the reader to generate ideas and find ways to utilize the Four Dynamics effectively. This approach helps bridge the gap between concept and application, illustrating how one can truly internalize and benefit from the learning.
            • 07:30 - 12:00: Analysis of the Dynamics in Acts 9 This chapter titled 'Analysis of the Dynamics in Acts 9' delves into the transformation of an individual, specifically focusing on the life-changing dynamics experienced by Paul, a significant biblical figure. It prompts readers to engage collaboratively in examining the scripture, identifying four key dynamics that facilitated profound changes in Paul's life. The chapter encourages collective exploration and reflection on these transformational aspects within scriptural contexts.
            • 12:00 - 16:00: Spiritual Dynamics and Humility The chapter explores the transformative dynamics in Paul's life, examining his journey from being a zealous Pharisee known for persecuting the church to becoming a profoundly changed individual by the end of his story.
            • 16:00 - 19:00: Personal Reflection and Exercise The chapter discusses the concept of transformation and its importance. The author introduces the 'four dynamics' as a model to aid in understanding transformation. • 00:00 - 00:30 [Music] what i'd like to do with you now is i'd like to make one more revolution actually there'll be one more right now and then one later we'd like to make one more revolution around the four dynamics again remember my picture of the spiral it looks like we're going over the same ground again spiritual relational experiential instructional but
            • 00:30 - 01:00 if you look sideways you see that it's actually spiraling down so again we're going to go down a little bit further because when we learn a new concept it's not enough just to note in concept we need to know it in application so you notice when i first started i started as a concept and now i'm moving towards application and i'm bridging you over this last exercise was a partial application you come up with ways to use the four dynamics you generate ideas okay and now i'm going to ask you to look at
            • 01:00 - 01:30 an example of how the dynamics changed one person's life and that one person is paul who we know from the scripture so we're going to look at it look at the four dynamics and how they brought about change in paul's life so here's what i'm going to ask you to do i'm going to ask you to work as a table and i want you to look through the scripture and again this they may just come to your mind and you'll know exactly where to go
            • 01:30 - 02:00 but i want you to look at the scriptures and to find out what dynamics impacted paul's life to make him the person he was now recall who was he originally how did we know how we first introduced to paul in the bible who was he he was known as a pharisee and not only as a pharisee but as the one who persecuted the church now at the end of the story we find him to be a very different person indeed
            • 02:00 - 02:30 transformed remember our model is a model of transformation the four dynamics are for the purpose of transformation so what i'm asking you to investigate is what brought about the transformation in his life and we have to help us in that investigation the lens of the four dynamics so i want you to look through this lens to figure out how was paul so radically
            • 02:30 - 03:00 transformed so that earlier he was the enemy of the church and later he was the great pronoun of the church okay all right i'd like to hear your contributions again just to restate the question we know that paul was changed powerfully transformed remember we're looking at a model of transformation paul is an example of transformation
            • 03:00 - 03:30 and so we're looking at back we're taking a backwards look to investigate what were the dynamics that affected his change so that he was no longer the persecuted of the church but a proponent of the church no longer a persecutor of the gospel but a proponent of the gospel what brought about the change so we're looking for things that may have brought about change and we're looking through the lens of the four dynamics so now you're going to give me
            • 03:30 - 04:00 some examples and we're going to make sure that they're cataloged correctly and this will sharpen our understanding of the dynamics and it will heighten our appreciation as we see their ability to change people's life their ability to bring change in people's lives okay the dynamics don't change them but they bring the opportunity for change okay so what did you find okay you know this is such a rich experience that we could look at it through
            • 04:00 - 04:30 [Music] as the story unfolds and see that each aspect may have a different dynamic so let's use this story acts 9 and let's find all the dynamics that are at work here let's just start there acts 9 is so rich so thank you queen for that it does include the spiritual dynamic but one portion of it is more strongly spiritual and what else is there okay let's use that one acts 9 what do you find
            • 04:30 - 05:00 good good all right so let me record those here so first of all there's just there's just a revelation he he hears the voice the voice of jesus right that's a spiritual dynamic that's revelation now the experiential you're saying is he experiences blindness
            • 05:00 - 05:30 that will cause a person to take notice one who thought he saw everything now can't see at all good so we have the experiential dynamic what else acts nine go ahead miguel came to meet him absolutely so let's put
            • 05:30 - 06:00 ananias here again this is acts 9 he ananias came to meet him and ananias was an influence for his transformation great and we can even go deeper there's even more here now what kind of baptism is this scripture talking about do we know it could be but we've got a lot of spiritual dynamics going on here let's let's let's put them down one at a time so he's baptized let's include that
            • 06:00 - 06:30 that's an influence isn't it so he's baptized do i spell that with the z is that the british spelling or the american spelling okay so he's baptized well do is it is it with water or was the spirit or is it both let's put both and i should make that capital s okay these are powerful spiritual influences
            • 06:30 - 07:00 good yes yes what is that there's some sort of healing to the blindness he previously had so let's put that a healing experience which you know if someone wanted to argue well let's maybe put it over here yeah okay i could hear what you're saying but again we tend to put things that are miraculous or issues of revelation we tend to put them over here in the spiritual dynamic
            • 07:00 - 07:30 but you can argue and and i won't fight you that it's an experience belongs over here i'm asking the question what kind of experience whenever i find experiences and that's what leads me to bring it more over to this side okay other examples where he says so friendly he said lord what do you want me to do and then the lord said arrive and go to the city you'll be told what you must do all right bob is asking a good question there's a question another table asks me
            • 07:30 - 08:00 during the preparation time when the lord speaks to someone he gives instruction does he not so shouldn't that shouldn't that be catalogued as an instructional dynamic well it seems to make sense but again we're looking at the conveyance and here's the here's the assumption we want to dismantle if it's instructional in nature it must be the instructional dynamic why would i want to dismantle that because of this fact and we said it earlier today
            • 08:00 - 08:30 because all of the dynamics instruct now again that might seem a little mind-boggling to you because we've labeled this one the instructional dynamic but remember our conversation with roger earlier he put it with he used the word learn we learn in every dynamic the synonym to learning is instruction the instruction is the process by which someone is helping someone learn learning is the receptive part all the dynamics bring learning
            • 08:30 - 09:00 by means of instruction so we're not so much looking at the end result we're looking at the mechanism what's the vehicle and in this case the vehicle is a revelation when the lord speaks to us we hear the voice of god that's revelation and because it's so startling supernatural in nature we put it here the supernatural and the spiritual where god contacts us directly without any kind of intermediator that we put in the spiritual dynamic it is instructional yes but its
            • 09:00 - 09:30 connection directly with god and remember we labeled this quadrant as a connection with god did we also say if the instruction comes more from context that's helpful too just to repeat again we have instruction that comes from content and construction that comes from context we understand that instruction comes from both
            • 09:30 - 10:00 great we'll talk about that more this afternoon others several days and i'm assuming there's a lot of construction okay all right so we we do have to read it it's obvi well it seems to be ripe with the relational does it not and what passage was that becca could you tell me okay so acts 19 acts 9 19 okay acts 9
            • 10:00 - 10:30 19. so uh in jerusalem in damascus excuse me paul paul spent time with the disciples of damascus right excellent so i'm going to put that in the relational dynamic but actually we do know that some instruction took place because he he was he had to be corrected on some things and so
            • 10:30 - 11:00 let's put that down here too the disciples of damascus all right now again we're inferring a bit but i just want to get too far feel but i think we can maybe assume that some of that's going on yeah that gives us a time period wonderful okay so i'm going to put that down galatians as well it's galatians one isn't it great okay what else did you find
            • 11:00 - 11:30 maybe we've milked acts 9 i don't know if you found anything else isn't that interesting okay all right again let's distinguish both end result and process the statement he grew more powerful is a description of transformation it's results and not necessarily process
            • 11:30 - 12:00 how did he grow more powerful could it be the combined effort of all four possibly so it's an end result and it testifies to the fact that he is changing already in this first experience radically good roger what'd you find uh absolutely and that is second corinthians 12 where is that okay so let's let's open our bibles this is actually a fascinating one
            • 12:00 - 12:30 i'm glad you found it roger let's look at second corinthians second corinthians chapter 12 open your bibles and let's look at this in closer detail because there's a really interesting contrast here and i i want to make sure that you see it now at the beginning of chapter 12 verse 1 paul relates a vision that he had now what took place in the vision remember he was caught up into the third
            • 12:30 - 13:00 heaven and what did he see there he describes it as as revelations right visions and revelations undescribable so what dynamic are the visions in the revelations this is this is this is definitely an experience but what kind of experience spiritual so everything is an experience but we're going to locate it catalog it
            • 13:00 - 13:30 based on the type of experience in this case the third heaven i'm going to call the third heaven experience is a spiritual dynamic because he experiences how close can you get to god but to be in heaven and there you see mysteries of the throne you see visions but what's interesting is how he follows up in verse seven this is fascinating to keep me from becoming conceited
            • 13:30 - 14:00 because of these surpassingly great revelations there was given me a thorn in my flesh so paul is making it very clear that there is the temptation to become conceited because of revelation and isn't this our tendency talk to someone that has heard from god or had a great vision and if this happens repeatedly there is a temptation to for them to take themselves too seriously and to think that they are a supernatural giant
            • 14:00 - 14:30 and paul is saying in effect that was a temptation to me but in order that that would not happen the lord gave me this thorn in the flesh now what see we have five c's when paul talks about being conceited and the lord trying to work to prevent him becoming conceited which of the seas is god working on he doesn't want him to be conceited so which of the seas is god concerned about character
            • 14:30 - 15:00 what's the opposite of conceitedness conceit humility god wants him to be humble and he knows that the vision despite all of its benefit actually could produce a negative result isn't that interesting it's what we were talking about earlier that the experience which is meant for his benefit could actually end up for the destruction of his character if he moves to conceit so to preclude that he counteracts that
            • 15:00 - 15:30 experience with the thorn in the flesh i think it's fascinating in order to shape our character who does god call to the forefront he calls the most the most impressive teacher he could find dr thorne have you met dr thorne he has tremendous credentials his lectures are always very pointed we get the point right when dr thorne is on the scene and that's why i want to say to you
            • 15:30 - 16:00 don't think that the only place instruction occurs is here because as roger's reminding us the thorn was a great teacher we don't have to know what it was that's not really that important right now but the issue is that through an experience god used it to shape his character and i want you to see this he did not god did not resort to a lecture or a book to teach him humility
            • 16:00 - 16:30 he needed to ensure that paul would remain humble and he couldn't trust that to a simple lecture he had to trust that to an experience are you with me because experience is such a great teacher so this exercise i think is helpful because we can look back at paul's life and see that he didn't just did not just change overnight it wasn't just the acts 9
            • 16:30 - 17:00 voice of god but that he continued to change throughout his life and all four dynamics were involved in bringing about that transformation now if this was the case in paul's life don't you imagine it's also the case in your life i'm not going to ask you to do it now but i would like to ask you to try to do this possibly for homework tonight and we can share it tomorrow on the page opposite where we were just working is another chart for your life
            • 17:00 - 17:30 and i'd like you to do the same thing look at your life look back at how god's worked through all four dynamics to make you the person that you are today let me share with you a little story there's one translator that i've worked with for years and years and years so she's heard me teach this class numerous times and she sat down and did the exercise and when she came back the next morning share her face was just glowing and she said i can't believe it
            • 17:30 - 18:00 god has been working through my entire life through these four dynamics and i never saw it and the reason i mention this is because you can sit here and you can agree with me yeah i know god's been using the four dynamics in my life but here's an interpreter who heard me share this who who shared it into the recipient's language but yet she herself was shocked with revelation when she actually did the exercise so i want to encourage you even though you think you know this take a look and you'll be amazed at how your own gratitude wells up for god
            • 18:00 - 18:30 at things you really never saw and how he has been such a skillful designer bringing people into your life bringing experiences into your life bringing encounters to your life opportunities for instruction in your life and it will just lead to a greater appreciation and worship of god i'm confident i did it myself and when i taught this in my own school down in texas we would have the students do this exercise and then from this they would build their collage
            • 18:30 - 19:00 you have in your school you have people make a collage we did this first on the chart and then from this they used art materials pictures photographs clippings and they built a collage of their life and my what a time we had sharing our life with one another now having looked at it through the lens of the four dynamics so i'd like to recommend the same thing to you how about it sound good all right so we're we're at the end of about an hour and it's getting hot again you're getting sleepy again so i suggest we take a break what do you think
            • 19:00 - 19:30 you
