Overview
Driving fast while being safe is a skill that every learner driver must develop to pass the driving test in Great Britain. The key takeaway is never to drive faster than you feel comfortable with. Always pay attention to road conditions and your skill level. Not being marked down during the test involves understanding when it is safe to progress quickly and when to slow down, especially around bends and other obstacles.
One crucial technique for adjusting your speed is the vanishing point strategy, where you gauge your speed by how far ahead you can see. This ensures you can always stop safely within the visible distance. Along with this, understanding car control, especially during cornering, and how your car's weight distribution affects grip can significantly enhance your driving skills.
New drivers are encouraged to focus initially on maintaining proper road position over tracking the vanishing point too rigidly. Progress to mastering speed control comes with experience, so it's important to prioritize safety first. This is compounded by learning the rules of the road and adjusting to various conditions like wet roads and busy rural areas. Prioritizing safety will not only help you pass the driving test but also make you a competent driver in the long run.
Chapters
00:00 - 00:30: Introduction to Driving Fast and Safely The chapter 'Introduction to Driving Fast and Safely' emphasizes the importance of balancing speed with safety while driving. It advises never to drive faster than one's comfort level allows and to always listen to one's judgment. The narrator demonstrates driving on a 60 MPH road at 30 MPH, highlighting the importance of driving at a safe speed even if it is below the road's speed limit. This approach is also recommended for learner drivers until they are ready to handle higher speeds safely.
00:30 - 01:00: Progression and Speed in Driving Tests The chapter discusses the importance of achieving both safety and progress in driving tests. It emphasizes that merely being safe and legal is not sufficient to pass a driving test; making adequate progress is equally important. The chapter focuses on teaching learner drivers when to accelerate and when to slow down, which is crucial for passing the test without incurring minor faults. It illustrates this by providing examples of driving at a speed conducive to passing the test.
01:00 - 01:30: Understanding Speed and Confidence The chapter titled "Understanding Speed and Confidence" discusses the subjective nature of how examiners assess driving speed during a driving test. The narrator explains that different examiners may have varying thresholds for what is considered 'too slow,' but generally, their assessments are within the same range. The narrator demonstrates driving at a speed where they believe a learner would not receive a minor mark for slow driving, and contrasts this with a faster speed they might choose due to their greater driving experience. Currently, the narrator is driving in a 30 mph zone, exercising caution due to limited visibility caused by a building obstructing the view.
01:30 - 02:00: Speed Adjustments and Road Surface Awareness This chapter deals with the challenges learner drivers face when adjusting to changing speed limits and road conditions. The narrator discusses how they respond to a national speed limit sign while driving on a road with a 60 mph limit. They express anxiety about increasing speed due to their lack of confidence and the bumpy road surface. The chapter emphasizes the importance of both adhering to speed regulations and being aware of the road conditions to ensure safety during driving, especially for new drivers.
02:00 - 02:30: Safety Around Pedestrians and Road Hazards The chapter titled 'Safety Around Pedestrians and Road Hazards' discusses driving considerations for handling bends and road conditions. It suggests that if a driver finds themselves not needing to slow down for bends, it indicates they are likely driving too slowly. Drivers are reminded to slow down gently and change gears appropriately when approaching bends to maintain control and safety. The emphasis is on reacting to road conditions by adjusting speed properly.
02:30 - 03:00: Braking Techniques and Vehicle Dynamics This chapter titled 'Braking Techniques and Vehicle Dynamics' focuses on understanding the feeling of driving rather than relying solely on numbers for speed limits. It explains that while navigating roads, the approach should be to speed up on straighter sections and slow down as bends appear, instead of maintaining a constant speed throughout. This emphasizes the importance of adapting your speed based on the road's characteristics, such as width, straightness, surface, and current conditions, rather than just adhering to numerical speed limits.
03:00 - 03:30: Cornering and Speed Control The chapter discusses techniques for controlling speed and cornering while driving. The narrator describes approaching the national speed limit on a long straight road and emphasizes the importance of maintaining a safe speed, especially when vision is limited approaching a bend. The narrator shares a technique focusing on the space beside a truck rather than on the truck itself to maintain safe driving. As the view becomes clear, the narrator notes that it is safe to increase speed again.
03:30 - 04:00: Adjusting Speed for Visibility and Road Conditions The chapter discusses adjusting driving speed according to visibility and road conditions. It emphasizes slowing down at bends to maintain control and safety while making more progress on straights where visibility makes it safe. The speaker contrasts their approach with that of a learner driver, highlighting the importance of adjusting speed appropriately to make safe and efficient progress.
04:00 - 04:30: Impact of Road Features on Speed The chapter discusses the impact of road features like straight paths, speed limits, hazards, and bends on how one should control the vehicle's speed. It emphasizes the importance of learning these aspects from an instructor to ensure proper braking techniques and understanding when to decrease speed to avoid pressure on one tire. The narrative underlines the importance of instruction to safely navigate road features, ensuring students do not learn these skills on their own because instructors can guide them on when and where to brake effectively.
04:30 - 05:00: Understanding Vehicle Control on Bumps and Varying Grip This chapter focuses on understanding how to control a vehicle when encountering bumps and varying road grip conditions. It emphasizes the importance of slowing down to maintain safety and control, rather than just focusing on speed. The key takeaway is to break in a straight line before bends, manage gears effectively, and know where it's safe to accelerate again. Maintaining these practices ensures safe and efficient driving.
05:00 - 05:30: Weather and Surface Conditions This chapter focuses on the impact of weather and surface conditions on driving. The transcript illustrates a scenario where the surface is wet, emphasizing the importance of slowing down when approaching a bend, especially when pedestrians are present. The narrative highlights the necessity of anticipating situations where pedestrians might be at risk due to oncoming vehicles, and the importance of being prepared to stop or react accordingly.
05:30 - 06:00: Acceleration, Traction, and Vehicle Steering This chapter discusses the importance of being vigilant while driving, especially in situations where an oncoming vehicle is approaching at high speed. It emphasizes the significance of being able to stop in time for pedestrians, allowing oncoming vehicles to safely navigate around both the pedestrian and the stopping vehicle. The key message is to be prepared for unexpected situations regardless of who might be at fault. The chapter uses a model f 500 to demonstrate the importance of braking when required.
06:00 - 06:30: Importance of Focusing on the Vanishing Point This chapter emphasizes the importance of understanding how weight distribution affects a car's performance, particularly focusing on the concept of the 'vanishing point.' It explains how braking shifts the car's weight forward, making the front tires do more work. Similarly, during cornering, the weight shifts to the side opposite the direction of the turn, affecting which tires bear the load. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for effective driving, particularly in adjusting strategies for car handling.
06:30 - 07:00: Differences in Skill Levels Between Drivers The chapter discusses the differences in skill levels between drivers, focusing on the concepts of oversteer and understeer. During braking and cornering, the weight shifts to one corner of the car, causing one tire to work harder than the others. This affects the car's handling and the likelihood of losing control, as drivers need to manage both oversteer, where the car spins, and understeer, where the car doesn't turn as expected despite steering inputs.
07:00 - 07:30: Driving Strategy for Learners vs. Experienced Drivers The chapter discusses the concept of car balance while driving, particularly focusing on a car that is front-engined and front-wheel drive. It explains that such cars typically have more weight over the front wheels, with about 60% of the car's mass resting on them. The transcript highlights that the car is at its most balanced state during acceleration. However, caution is advised against accelerating too hard out of corners as it could induce undesired effects.
07:30 - 08:00: Conclusion and Insurance Recommendations The chapter focuses on safe driving practices and adjusting speed in response to road conditions. It emphasizes the importance of braking before bends and accelerating on straight roads. There is a suggestion to cover the brake when approaching warning signs, indicating sharp bends ahead, to ensure safety. The discussion involves adjusting speed as the road conditions change and maintaining control over the vehicle through proper gear shifts before entering a bend.
How To Drive Fast Safely & What's Expected On The Driving Test In Great Britain Transcription
00:00 - 00:30 so how do you drive quickly yet safely well firstly never drive faster than you feel you can handle and listen to your judgment keep that in mind throughout this video and whenever you're behind the wheel I'm now on a 60 MPH Road and I'm doing around about 30 m an hour I'm not speeding up when it's safe to do so I'm just doing about the same speed everywhere if this was my pupil driving I would know that they're not yet ready
00:30 - 01:00 to pass the driving test because although you need to be safe and legal to pass the driving test you also need to make enough progress and that's why it's important that I teach my pups when it's safe to go faster and when they need to slow down and that's why I'm making this video I'm now going to do that road twice more the first time I'm going to do it is going to be at the speed where I'm confident a learner driver would pass the driving test and they're not going to be getting miners
01:00 - 01:30 for going too slow now this is subjective examiners are not exactly the same here some will mark it at a different speed to others but they are in the same ballpark I'm going to do the minimum speed where I'm confident that the learner driver won't be getting a minor Mark for going too slow then I'm going to do it at my speed which would be a lot faster but then I have a lot more experience than a Lear a driver I'm in a 30 at the moment just very slow now because I can't see around this building that's sticking into the the road now
01:30 - 02:00 I'm speeding up I see the national speed limit sign so I'm a learner driver and we're on a 60 stretch of road now so we're accelerating I know the speed limit is high here I'm getting to about this speed and I'm feeling like I don't really feel confident going faster than this road a little bit bumpy but at this speed I think most examiners on a road like this being this wide and the Road surface being as is a
02:00 - 02:30 little bit bumpy in places the vast majority of examiners aren't going to be marking down a miner here I'm not quite fast enough that I needed to slow down for that slight Bend and that's usually a sign if you're not having to slow down for things then you're probably not going fast enough but they were slight bends and approaching this Bend now you probably need to slow down a little bit just slowing down in a straight line down a couple of Gears there and I think if my P did this speed they wouldn't be
02:30 - 03:00 getting marked down this is really the minimum though the absolute minimum for this road you shouldn't really be looking at the numbers because it's going to vary from road to Road how wide it is how straight the straights are the road surface the conditions it is a feeling and the feeling that you're aiming for is that you're trying to make use of those Straits you're not just doing the same speed everywhere when it's straighter you're speeding up and when bends appear then you're slowing down
03:00 - 03:30 so I'm on the 30 approaching the national speed limit and now I'm on a 60 so I'm speeding up the straight is very long earlier I said how straight the straights are but I actually meant how long the straights are and I'm actually in quite close to the speed limit so I'm not allowed to go any faster I'm looking at the space next to the truck not the truck itself and I'm reducing my speed towards this Bend because I can't see very far around the bend now I've got my distance again I can see far I can speed
03:30 - 04:00 up the learner didn't need to slow down for that bend because they're at the bend speed on the straight I actually got down to probably a similar speed to them on that bend but I was going faster on the straights like I am now now I'm breaking for the bend and I'm probably again taking this Bend at a similar speed to the learner but it's just that I'm making more progress where it's safe to do so more progress on the straights where I can see it safe and I'm making sure I slow
04:00 - 04:30 down or get the bulk of my slowing down when I'm not steering so that I don't put too much pressure on one tire but more on that one later once my pupils are making the most out of the straight and the speed limits the next common problem is slowing down they tend not to slow down enough if at all for hazards and bends and that's why it's important they're learning this with their instructor for the first time and not on their own because I can help them know where they need to break where they want to avoid break breaking because it may
04:30 - 05:00 unsettle the car so maybe break before that point and where it's safe to accelerate again so driving quickly and safely is mostly about slowing down anyone can put their foot down and go fast but to be safe you need to know where you need to be slow and what's the best way to slow down and the most important thing is breaking in a straight line so I break there in a straight line did my gear in a straight line before the bend and then use the gas I'm now slowing down cu the road
05:00 - 05:30 surface is more wet but I'm doing that in a straight line before the bend not on the bend I'm slowing down now because there's a pedestrian on the other side of the road now they're on the other side of the road why do I need to be slow here what if someone comes really quick the other way I want to be ready for that if the oncoming vehicle is not ready for The Pedestrian at least I'm ready for that oncoming vehicle when they find out they don't have time to stop in time for The Pedestrian me slowing down for that pedestrian means
05:30 - 06:00 that if there's an oncoming vehicle going too quickly to stop in time for The Pedestrian well if I have time to stop before The Pedestrian then the oncoming vehicle can go around The Pedestrian and around me if I was going quick as well then well there may be no way out of that situation it doesn't matter whose fault it is what matters is that you are prepared for what may happen I'm going to use this little model f 500 to demonstrate why it's important to break when you're in a
06:00 - 06:30 straight line ignore the fact that the tracking is out on this car at the moment it needs some adjustment so when you're braking the weight of the car goes to the front and therefore the front two tires are doing more of the work when you're cornering the weight of the car goes to the side which side well that depends which way you're cornering if you're going right the weight of the car is going to go to the left and therefore the left two tires are going to be doing more of the work but if you're
06:30 - 07:00 breaking and cornering now the weight is going to one corner of the car and therefore one of the tires is doing more of the work than the other three tires this significantly reduces the speed at which you will lose control of the car you are much more likely to over steer which is when the car goes into a spin and also you're much more likely to under steer which is when you turn the wheel but the car can carries on in a
07:00 - 07:30 straight line so when you're driving you want to balance the car you want all four tires to be working as equally as possible and this car is front engined front-wheel drive meaning there's more weight over the front than the rear in fact about 60% of the mass of this car is over the front tires and therefore when I'm accelerating this car is actually at its most balanced but that doesn't mean you should accelerate hard out of Corners because if if you accelerate too hard then you can induce
07:30 - 08:00 under steer so this road has a 60 MPH speed limit and I'm going to demonstrate when I accelerate and when I break I'm accelerating now because it's straight got a warning sign saying there's a double Bend coming I'm covering the brake now and starting to use the brake to slow down before the bend now I'm coming off the brake and using the gas to maintain my speed and then I'll gradually increase the speed as the road straightens up now I can accelerate quite a bit harder but now I'm breaking before the bend down a gear before the
08:00 - 08:30 bend and clutch down before the bend using the gas to maintain my speed accelerating between the bends breaking before the next Bend no need to change gear there using the gas to maintain my speed again and now accelerating onto this straight a slight right Bend here but that's not going to make much of a difference to me but this right Bend whe so I'm breaking before this right Bend using my gas to maintain the speed and then accelerating as I exit the bend that's what you're doing you're breaking
08:30 - 09:00 before the bends maintaining your speed through the bend and then accelerating on the straight and trying to get as much out of the straight as you can and try and do the gear shifts before you need to turn the wheel as well so a little bit of break here now maintaining the speed so it's a right Bend then a left Bend now a nice straight and this is where I can put my foot down and get the car up to speed up a gear up another gear now I'm getting near the speed limit I've got to be aware of that so
09:00 - 09:30 now I'm actually paying attention to the Limit before I wasn't I was just looking at the road I'll pay attention to the limit when I get near it because that's when it actually matters to prevent myself from going over it unintentionally now I was breaking a little bit on this Bend but I am breaking gently I'm not saying you can't break on Bends definitely you need to break on Bends I'm on a slight Bend here breaking but you don't want to slow your car down dramatically on a tight Bend get the bulk of your slowing down done
09:30 - 10:00 before you enter the bend you also need to adjust your speed based on how much you can see if you look at this left Bend now if there was someone walking on the right side of the road you would see them much further ahead than if they were walking on the left because this hedge on the left would block your view of them walking at the side much earlier than if they were on the right side of the road now this road isn't even very bad it's a 30 mph
10:00 - 10:30 road with a pavement if it was a 60 with a hedge right up against the edge of the road you wouldn't see someone walking on the left side because you wouldn't be able to see the left side of the road very far and you need to be ready for people walking at the side of the road on these roads so on this right Bend I can actually see the left side of the road really far if anybody was walking here I'd have plenty of warning to slow down and possibly stop sometimes times I may have to stop if there's no room to
10:30 - 11:00 go past them and as you can see this left Bend doesn't actually allow me to see if anyone's walking just out of view now I can see if someone's walking so that's why I slowed down there I'm always ready for people walking at the side of the road you also need to consider the type of area you're driving in at the moment this is fairly rural it's a national speed limit so the limit is 60 MPH but as I get round this left Bend
11:00 - 11:30 which I'm going to slow down for because I can't see the side of the road very far and there could be someone walking here when I get around this Bend there's quite a few houses here and some driveways so I'll tend to go a bit slower through here than I will where there's no houses because people live here people are going to be pulling out of the driveways and it's more likely that someone's going to be walking at the side of the road and now it's back to no houses I can pick my speed up again here's an example of a left hand
11:30 - 12:00 Bend where I do have a good view I can see over the grass and actually now I can see right the way to the next left Bend so there I can actually go quite a bit faster because I can see it's safe to do so I went 2 m hour over the speed limit there but bear in mind the speedo isn't perfectly accurate in this car I've got to do closer to 64 for it to be actually real 60 mph hour oh we've got some ducks the
12:00 - 12:30 sign here and this speed limit the speed limit on this road is 60 but I might not do 60 because if I go around this Bend and there's people bird watching as they quite often are here there you go there's people here there's no one actually at the side of the road but you get a lot of people bird watching kids feeding the birds so although this road has a 60 MPH speed limit I'm respecting other people here I'm not flying down on the road
12:30 - 13:00 quickly which is going to make these other Road users and Spectators should I say they're watching Birds it's going to make them feel stressed now I'm away from them I can speed up a bit although there's a Bend here so I'm delaying my acceleration now I can see now I can get going there's no one around it's accelerating on the straight and then slowing down before the bend again I'm on a nice long straight here able to get close to the 60 MPH speed limit but then I can't see over the crest of this little Hill here
13:00 - 13:30 and to the left so I'm slowing down I can't see if someone's walking at the side very far my view is improving a little bit but not by much because now it's bending to the right and I'm making sure I'm able to stop within the distance I can see to be clear and on a Bend it's going to take you a bit longer to stop so bear that in mind when you're deciding how fast to go going a bit faster now but now again can't see that far on this crest of the
13:30 - 14:00 Hill again I really can't see over it much so I'm slower in a lower gear now I can see again then I'm speeding up so Hills restrict your view as well as bends here's another brow of a hill where I can't see so I'm slowing down and now I can see I can carry on a nasty hole there so I'll get that underneath the car it's important that I can always stop within the distance I can see to be clear and if you're on a single Track Road you
14:00 - 14:30 need to be able to stop earli than that because cars are going to be coming head on to you so you need to allow them time to stop as well as yourself at the moment though there's plenty of room for me and an oncoming vehicle so being able to stop within the distance I can see to be clear should be enough also consider the road surface the road here is starting to look a little bit dirty I'm not sure if that's coming across on camera but that's a clue that it may become even more dirty which
14:30 - 15:00 it is so the speed limit here is 60 but there's a bend and there is dirt so I'm not going to go very fast over this dirt because the tire grips the road if there's a layer of dirt between the tire and the road well that's going to make things more slippery now the road is getting cleaner I can start accelerating also consider how bumpy the road is when you're driving at the moment it feels fairly smooth so things are fairly stable but if it starts to get bumpy
15:00 - 15:30 like it or it is now I'll probably reduce the speed a bit because when you're on a bumpy road the amount of grip you have is varying because as you go down into the road and get heavier you're going to have more grip but then as the car goes lighter as you go over the bump then you're going to have less grip so your grip is going to be varying all the time which is going to make it hard to predict but it's bumper here I'm slowing down I can see that bump there you go now I'm over I'll speed up but if your car's bumping
15:30 - 16:00 about all over the place it's hard to predict how much grip you're going to be having because it's going to vary so much I'm able to stop if someone's walking there we go look at that someone's walking on the bend and I was ready to stop found out I didn't need to so then I drove around them safely just to clarify what I mean about the bumps and grip when you compress into the road you have more grip when you're light you have less grip and when all four corners
16:00 - 16:30 of your car are bouncing up and down due to the bumps you have continuously varying levels of grip at all four corners of your car making it very hard to predict what level of traction you have also the car is going to lose control at a lower speed when this is happening and those bumps can be what provoke the car to lose control this is where firm sporty suspension doesn't make your car handle better it may do on a smooth surface surface but out there on that road it doesn't of course also
16:30 - 17:00 take into account the weather when it's wet you have less grip therefore the car is going to Skid much more early than if it's dry and it's going to take you longer to slow down best thing to do is assume as you see it's actually wet here this is actually the worst conditions where it's mostly dry and then you get wet patches there you got to be ready for wetness just around the corner you got to be quite careful in these uh conditions but what I was saying was
17:00 - 17:30 is in the wet assume you have about half the grip of what you have in the dry it's not necessarily the case but it's a safe assumption and when it's icy assume you have nearly no traction at all that's really going to come down to the sort of ice are on and the tires you have all season tires or winter tires make a big difference when it's see how
17:30 - 18:00 you accelerate can also make you lose control of the car if you press the gas pedal all the way down suddenly well that can make the car want to rotate or it may cause under steer which is when you turn the steering wheel but the car carries on in a straight line if the car is rear wheel drive it's more likely that it will want to rotate and if the car is front wheeel drive it's more likely that under steer will be the problem but in a front-wheel drive car even if you're on a straight in a
18:00 - 18:30 straight line and pin the throttle suddenly well that can induce torque steer which is when the steering wheel pulls you to left or right and you have to fight it to try and stay in a straight line the best way to solve these problems is to avoid accelerating much on Bends if you're going to accelerate on a Bend try to accelerate gently and if you want to accelerate quickly on a straight press the gas pedal gradually instead of all the way
18:30 - 19:00 suddenly where you look is super important to knowing how fast you can go you want to look at where the road vanishes out of view and then you want to chase that vanishing point but never catch it as that vanishing point gets further ahead then you can go faster but as you catch up with it you need to slow down you always want to be slow enough that you can stop before you get to your current vanishing point but a word of
19:00 - 19:30 warning for new drivers and Learners when new drivers try to focus on the vanishing point and that vanishing point happens to be to the left or the right meaning their line of sight cuts across a field or cuts across the other side of the road well new drivers tend to want to steer across the field or across the other side of the road usually it doesn't actually happen they steer too early get near the ditch and then correct themselves or go on the wrong side of the road a little bit then correct themselves but they want to
19:30 - 20:00 steer early and that's because new drivers don't have as much skill they don't have enough skill to focus on a fishing Point whilst maintaining a good position within their half of the road so they have to spend more time focusing on their half of the road to maintain a good position and this is one of the many reasons why learner drivers are not expected to get to the standard or the skill level of a seasoned d driver before they pass the driving test
20:00 - 20:30 because that would be unreasonable that wouldn't take tens of hours of practice that would take hundreds or maybe even thousands of hours of practice to get to the skill level of an experienced seasoned driver and that's why at the beginning of this video I showed you the speed or the minimum speed a learner would have to get to before they are likely to not get a minor on their driving test and then I showed you how fast I drove on that same bit of road it's very different that's because we
20:30 - 21:00 have a very different level of skill but that doesn't mean learner drivers shouldn't be aware of the vanishing point or using it yes they should be using the vanishing point to help them judge their speed but they're not going to be focusing on it as much they're going to be focusing mostly on their position because new drivers find it difficult to maintain a good position on these narrow Country Roads and for a beginner on these roads someone who's just starting out on country roads it's probably better not to focus on the vanishing point but instead to focus on
21:00 - 21:30 the next Bend that's a good start look at the bend accelerate towards the bend break before the bend and then go round the bend and as their skill improves and they get more confident then they can start looking a bit further around the bend towards the vanishing point but only if they can do so whilst maintaining a good position but whether or not you're a learner a new driver or an experienced driver is best to put safety first and then speed second if you found the video helpful please give a thumbs up and if you're looking for
21:30 - 22:00 car insurance check out the links to Collingwood and Confused in the description if you're learning to drive and want to insure yourself on somebody else's car then coning would are there for you because you can do so without affecting the owner's policy and that takes away a big stress from the owner of that car that you're using to practice your driving in via the link at the moment that's up to 35% off and a 20 gift card if you want to ensure your own car I recommend checking out the link to confused.com because you f out one quite form and get loads of quot back from many insurers to compare who cheapest
22:00 - 22:30 and you can change your car in that quote as many times as you like without having to do the whole quote again so it's a quick and easy way to compare how much it costs to ensure different cars using the links doesn't cost you anything but it does support the channel so thank you very much subscribe to get my future videos and until the next one cheerio
