The experience wasn't just a physical trial but also a mental exploration. From adapting to new ways of performing mundane tasks in the dark to dealing with the discomfort of limited food options, he navigated unexpected challenges and realizations. The chapter suggests an environment that might feel isolating or monotonous, necessitating creative coping strategies.
            • 09:00 - 12:00: Seeking Positivity The chapter "Seeking Positivity" describes a quirky and humorous scenario where the narrator is faced with the challenge of going to the bathroom without a bathroom in their immediate vicinity. To overcome this, they plan to walk to a bathroom located in the hallway while blindfolded, ensuring they do not fail the challenge. The narrator amusingly admits to having practiced going to the bathroom with their eyes closed over the past few days to memorize the route, preparing for the video they are making.
            • 12:00 - 15:00: Breaking Points and Realizations The narrator expresses their disbelief and frustration at their current situation, deciding that it's best to just sleep and persevere. They express a feeling of disorientation but also a positive mood. There is also a brief pause to adjust the lighting, suggesting a desire for clarity or comfort before continuing the discussion. Overall, the interaction reflects a tone of lightheartedness and introspection.
            • 28:00 - 30:30: Final Thoughts This brief concluding chapter entitled 'Final Thoughts' features a casual conversation marking the end of an encounter. One person asks if anything is needed before they leave, leading to a light-hearted exchange about a 'funny word' to ponder. The word 'hullabaloo'—meaning a commotion or fuss—is suggested and met with amused acceptance. This simple request humorously suffices for the next five hours. The interaction ends on the note of anticipated future communication and the routine pleasure of a well-cooked meal, encapsulating warmth and familiarity.

I Spent 7 Days In Darkness, Here’s What I Saw Transcription

            • 00:00 - 00:30 I love challenging myself physically and mentally, which is why I thought of an idea that may push me all the way to my limit. I'm about to spend seven days in total darkness. Hit the lights. I can't see anything. Also to make sure I don't lose my mind, my friend Chase will be monitoring me through the cameras. - I mean, can you- can you see anything? I can see the lights from the cameras. I mean, they're basically just little dots. - This sucks, man. Don't say that.
            • 00:30 - 01:00 - Well, been a pleasure, sir. See you, bro. Okay, first things first, you may be wondering how I'm going to eat while I'm in here. I have a kettle and some jugs of water so that I can drink, but also, so I can fill the kettle. I can't believe I didn't just spill that. I won’t lie to you. I'm using these MREs. I really don't wanna spill boiling hot water all over myself. I think I got it. I think I got it! I don't really know what these meals are, but let's find out together.
            • 01:00 - 01:30 Oh my gosh. Oh my goodness. Now I am going to do some light journaling. Day one. I'm trying to be optimistic, but this already seems very challenging. The hardest part of this challenge will be finding ways to pass the time, like spinning in my chair for a stupidly long time. If I'm already this bored, this isn't looking good for me. Okay, so you may have noticed one other very important thing about this room.
            • 01:30 - 02:00 There's no bathroom. So how am I going to go potty? That’s a very good question. The answer is that I'm going to simply walk out the door and do my business in the bathroom that's in the hallway. And so I don't ruin the challenge, I'm going to wear a blindfold. Mission accomplished. Can I tell something crazy? I actually- this is so embarrassing. The last few days I have been going to the bathroom with my eyes closed to make sure I've got it all memorized in preparation for this video.
            • 02:00 - 02:30 This is insane. Oh my gosh. Okay, I’m just gonna go to bed, try to get this over with and you know, push through as much of it as I possibly can. Let's do this. I had a dream where I opened a fridge and it was just like so bright. Good morning! Okay, so this is where the real hard part begins. I got to keep myself busy for a full day. So first things first, I’ve got to work out, gotta make my body active so that by the time it's time to go to bed tonight,
            • 02:30 - 03:00 I’m actually sleepy. Okay, today is a guitar day, so I did bring a guitar and leave it in here. Should give me something to do, and I'm curious to see if I'm like more in tune with it because I can't see. Hello? - Hey, how you doing? Dude! I’m chilling. I was just playing my guitar, I got a workout in- - Oh, I know. I watched your workout. Geez. - Did you see GTA 6 just came out? - They said it’s only going to be out for three days. - Let me know what time you think it is.
            • 03:00 - 03:30 I think that it’s day two. I'm honestly going to guess like 3:45 PM. - Okay. Have you eaten anything? Hmm. No! I should eat. I’m gonna play my guitar for a bit and then I’m gonna eat. - Dude, have a good one. Thanks, man. See ya. Weirdly, it's kind of nice being trapped. I have all the time in the world and zero other responsibilities. But I do need to make sure I eat something. Here we go.
            • 03:30 - 04:00 It's better. It's pretty cold, though. Whatever. That was kind of everything on my agenda today. I don't really know what else I can do, but I'm not super sleepy yet. Day two. I'm finding a lot of peace in the darkness. No distractions and every experience feels very valuable. Now, let's finish the day by relaxing enough to fall asleep. Man, I'm so off about the time. The more I think about it, the more I realize it. At this point, you could tell me that it's 2:00am of day two.
            • 04:00 - 04:30 And if you were serious, like I’d believe you. Hello? - How are you doing? Weird, but good. - Without further ado, what time do you think it is right now? I think that it is probably 5:00pm on day two. Which is funny because that doesn't mean I think that only an hour and fifteen minutes has passed since you last asked me. - Right, right. I just think I was so off. - Wait, actually, let me turn on a light in here. It’s a little…
            • 04:30 - 05:00 Oh, is it? - Do you need anything from me? Anything before I head out? Umm. Can you give me a funny word to think about? - Hullabaloo? Hullabaloo. Yeah, that’s a good one. That’s a real word? - Yeah. It means a commotion or fuss. That’s all I needed. I’m good for the next five hours, I think. - Okay. Well, I’m sure we’ll chat again. So. Like ever? Yeah, I hope so. Let’s eat dinner. Okay, I've cooked this one a lot more. So I'm very, very excited to see if it's actually good.
            • 05:00 - 05:30 This is the best one so far. Wow. I mean, it's not amazing by any means but wow. Oh yeah! I brought in vitamin D pills because I figured I wouldn't be getting enough sunlight, obviously. It' so tiny. Wow. Now I've got the sunlight inside. Maybe I’ll round out the- Geez, this chair is so squeaky. Think I’ll round out the evening with some more guitar and brush my teeth, call it a night.
            • 05:30 - 06:00 My hand is right in front of my face and I can't even see it. Not even remotely. Strange. Okay. I think it's late, so I'm gonna get ready for bed. Hopefully, I'm right, and Chase is going to bed right now, too. Hey, how you doing? - Doin’ alright. So, this is Luke. He's asleep in bed right now. It's pitch black in here. He's staying in here for seven days. Let me see if I can find when he was eating. He can't see anything. He's pouring boiling water.
            • 06:00 - 06:30 - Oh my god! - Oh, it didn’t look good. - Oh my god! - So, the camera that he has doesn't have the light on or anything. It's picking up infrared light, so like the camera sees it as bright, but that's just black to him. - What’s up, dude? Dude, what's going on? How's it going? - Luke’s been in here a little bit now; it’s been at least an hour at this point. Yeah! Yeah.
            • 06:30 - 07:00 Okay, this is a fun twist, but maybe I can get some information, too. But Edgar how are you, man? - Dude, I’m good, man. What has your life been like… you know? - Edgar, I know that you’re not going to but just- - Make sure you don’t give any indication of, like, what time day it is- Chase, shut up! Shut up! - Before I came back from my trip, you know, I got home the day after whatever- Yeah, give me a day by day. - Do not give him a day by day. - Honestly, since Edgar’s here, we can do a fun game while he’s on the line.
            • 07:00 - 07:30 - I see you eating this terrible, terrible food. - I’m going to randomly generate a letter and then you’re going to have - five seconds to name a food that begins with that letter. - Whatever you say, no matter how insane, I will acquire and bring to you during this video. Whoa! I’m saying a specific food, not like a restaurant? - You can pretty much say anything. Okay! - Luke, are you ready? I mean, I don’t know. I wasn’t expecting this! - Your letter is…
            • 07:30 - 08:00 - “c” as in “charlie”. Chipotle! - Okay. Well I’ll bring you some Chipotle. Dude, yes! Let’s go! Oh my god! - Just a bowl of black beans. - What time of day do you think it is? I do think it’s day two still. I think it's very late into day two, though. Like, I think I'm like probably like twenty-two hours in. - You think in two hours it will be day three? I do. - Okay. Well, Edgar let’s both leave and I’ll call you. Okay, bye! - Bye!
            • 08:00 - 08:30 I was telling the truth, I think it's basically midnight. So I am gonna try to go back to bed. Okay. Good morning! I'm feeling good today. I really am. You know, I think it'd be very easy for me to be negative in this situation, but I think positivity always wins; as cheesy as that sounds. So, on that note, let’s get a workout in. Whoa! You know what?
            • 08:30 - 09:00 Okay, good news, I think I just slept through most of the whole day. Bad news, I don't know how I'm gonna sleep again. Yo! - Hello! Hello! How's it going? - Good. How are you, man? Dude, I feel fantastic. You know? Never better. This is gonna be, you know, “Deep J” here, but it feels more like I'm awake and around and
            • 09:00 - 09:30 alive when I'm like asleep and dreaming. - Sure. It feels like right now is when you’re asleep. Yeah, well, this feels like a dream, right? - Well, what day and time do you think it is? I'll say 11:00pm. Day 3. - I’ll let you go. Don't you need my Chipotle order, guy? - Do you want guac? Yeah! If you’re paying, yeah. - Okay, cool. Ha ha ha! - You’re going to enjoy this guac more than anyone’s ever enjoyed guac before. Wait. How are you bringing me this food? - You don’t need to worry about that. I’ve already thought of this in this scenario
            • 09:30 - 10:00 - and I’ve already- I already know what I’m going to do. How are you getting into my home? - I don’t like all these questions. One more question and this Chipotle is not coming. - Dude, hang in there, man. Oh, I will. I’m having a great time. Positivity wins. - Yeah. See you, bye. See you. Speaking of Chipotle, let’s get a meal in. It's not great. Looking forward to Chipotle. Okay! Today I want to try something a little different from guitar. I also left a ukulele. Now, the only problem with this is I don't play ukulele.
            • 10:00 - 10:30 I know one chord. That's not the one I know. Since I figured I have all the time in the world here, I’m going to try to learn as much as I can just by listening and see if I can make a little song by the end of the day. Ukulele day! So it turns out playing the ukulele for hours is very relaxing.
            • 10:30 - 11:00 But I'm worried that it's not tiring enough for me to sleep later. There's still a lot of the day left, so I need to figure out new ways to keep busy. The best way I found that I’m able to sleep is right after a workout, so I'm just another workout. What's the worst that could happen? It's pretty. That's fun! New instrument unlocked.
            • 11:00 - 11:30 Let's go! I just got up from a long nap. It is unbelievable how disgusting this is. Wow. This might be the same as the first one. It's got that same something that's making me like gag. I mean, I don't know if you can see it. Now I'm going to eat it all. Think that’s everything. All right, that was… that was dinner. That's what that is.
            • 11:30 - 12:00 Geez. Day three. Learning ukulele in the dark is possible, but frustrating. I'm beginning to see that my discomforts are amplified, too not just my positive experiences and feelings. The food is bad, my body aches, and I'm very bored. Still, could be worse.
            • 12:00 - 12:30 “Ukule-Day” is a success. Stop! Sit. Now, once again, it's time to go to sleep. Where’s that bottle? I am not sleepy at all and have definitely reached the point where I will do anything to entertain myself. All right. The goal is simple. Hit the weight with the bottle using the ukulele. Oh wait. How will I know? I think I'll hear it.
            • 12:30 - 13:00 I think I'll hear it. Where is it? Did it go? It did! Wait, but now it’s over. Oh, it was fun while it lasted. Let's try this game. How about I try to hit the bottle with this little puck… the lid. Did I get it? I don't even know. I lost it for sure.
            • 13:00 - 13:30 Yeah, that thing’s gone. I don't know where that went. Where's my Chipotle, Chase? Where is it at? I think it's time to sleep. But I don't wanna- I mean, I've slept so much. I'm sick and tired of being all alone. I’ve got a headache, my neck hurts, and I can’t sleep. Which is not great. I think it's starting to get to me now. Just how- how much longer there is. God. Okay.
            • 13:30 - 14:00 I'm going to try another workout and see if that does the trick. What is that? I felt like the room was like pulsing green. And I'm really surprised- Oh, it’s happening! What is that? It's done. It’s gone. I think I'm losing it. I don’t know. I really didn't expect the food to be a problem. It's just- it’s getting to me.
            • 14:00 - 14:30 I can't get the taste out of my mouth. I can tell that my roommate is making something really good. It smells like bacon. Honestly, I don't know if I can do this, but my best chance is to keep trying to go to sleep. Hello? - What’s all the hullabaloo in there? - How’s it going, man? Horrible. - Oh god. What happened? You sick? Eh. Maybe, I don’t know. I really, really miss the sun. - It is cold outside. Well it’s cold inside, too.
            • 14:30 - 15:00 - Do you have a heater? No! - What? Dude, oh my god. - Are you hungry? Kinda. The food is just bad but- - Do you wanna open your door? Stop. - With the blindfold on. You’re not serious. - Well there’s two things there. You’re not serious, dude! There’s no way. There’s no way. There’s no way. Oh, wow!
            • 15:00 - 15:30 And what's this? - Yeah, so that is like a ginger bread house but it’s not necessarily a house. - You're gonna build whatever you think is in that box. Am I allowed- is it all edible, too? - Yeah it’s all edible. This is huge. This is huge. Dude, I could cry. Have you seen- have you been keeping an eye on me or no? - Yes and no. I did find one clip of you earlier where you said, “Chase, where’s my Chipotle?” No, I keep having a sensation if you want to look it up, maybe. Very faintly, it feels like the room is, like, kind of flashing and pulsing green.
            • 15:30 - 16:00 - This says by itself it’s not dangerous but if you’re also getting headaches ‘cause of it and stuff you should maybe- - you know, we should talk. Sure, okay! Cool. - What time do you think it is? Dude, oh man. I think it's probably like 6:00am on day four. Which is why this is very suspicious because I know I'm wrong ‘cause you could not have gotten this. So maybe I'll have to do some thinking- - Well, you don’t know what I’m capable of. - I mean, you said, “I’m hungry” and I made it appear at your door.
            • 16:00 - 16:30 I’ve been- I mean the last, like, I want to say 12 hours have been rough. I've been bored. - Yeah. Well, enjoy your Chipotle. I shall. The lid! I found it! Let's go! You can smell the guac. Oh my gosh. That is so good. It's so good.
            • 16:30 - 17:00 This is ridiculous. I feel like this video is better than any ad Chipotle has ever made. Man, I can't believe how miserable I’ve gotten. I mean, just a day ago, I was fine and I went downhill so fast. I feel a lot better. With a calmed mind and calmed stomach, I think I can finally go to sleep.
            • 17:00 - 17:30 Good morning! Whoops. I am feeling much better and I have come to a bit of a revelation that I will now write down. Day… I don’t know. After lots of sleeping and thinking, I've realized how unsure I am of what day it is. I think it's day four, five, or six, but that's quite a big range. I'm going to stop trying to keep track and just do my best to enjoy every moment.
            • 17:30 - 18:00 Positivity wins. I may not know what day it is, what time it is, and therefore, how much longer I have in here. But man, I- I don't think I care anymore. Why even try to keep track and mess that up and give false expectations? No, no, no. I'm just gonna do the best I can to enjoy every moment. And that starts with gingerbread thing. Let’s do it! I don't know what this is. It is a thing made of gingerbread that I have no instructions to.
            • 18:00 - 18:30 New instrument. Let's go! Ooh, and the bag! Kinda cool. Okay, I've got my gingerbread here. I believe this is my- my icing. This is gonna be a mess. I mean, this is just nothing, right? Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Is this to squeeze this out of? I was told this is not a house, but this shape sure feels like a house to me.
            • 18:30 - 19:00 Oh! A piece broke off. So we got two house-looking pieces. You're telling me this isn't a house? This feels like the chimney. Is this not a house? This is a house. This is a rectangle. Same height? No. Mmm. Not quite tall enough. I mean it's gotta be a house, right? This is an iconic house shape. When I was little, I made a gingerbread train. It was very good. Not to, you know, toot my own horn- but it was. This is not a gingerbread train. Wait a second, wait a second. Roofs slope over.
            • 19:00 - 19:30 They're usually like extended over. I think I'm cooking; hold on. Yeah. If this is here… Say there’s no floor, you can’t see in this thing. And then the other side is there and then it's two roofs that are sloping over. I think I just cracked it. I think Chase is messing with me and this is totally a house. I'm gonna build this thing. God, if I can pull this off… Taste test! Yeah, I mean it's delicious. It’s very good. Something happened, right? Yup, yep. Don't ruin it. Okay, you're ruining it. Oh man. Alright, here we go. Maybe I'll just mold it myself, you know what I mean? Like I'm paving the way.
            • 19:30 - 20:00 This is good, this is good… Pack it in… Okay, okay. Please. No! My spidey senses went off. It's not gonna be a clean gingerbread house, okay? You know, a lot of American homes just aren't clean. You know, life happens. I don't know what I'm talking about right now. You know, fun fact. That train I mentioned earlier, I might have used superglue. I mean, this is- this is impossible. There's a lot of sirens going on outside. They're probably looking for me. They got access to the cameras. They're like, “Oh my gosh, this guy's being held hostage.” Stop. Stop. Stop.
            • 20:00 - 20:30 Stop! You're not falling over. Hey! Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Stop. Just stay. Just do it. Like, where is the icing I just put on this? This is like designed to enrage me. It's all falling apart. Please, just work! If this roof falls off right now, I'm eating it. Dude. It’s game over, man. Don’t talk to me right now. Let's start out by talking about telling the truth, right?
            • 20:30 - 21:00 - Sure, sure. This is a house. - I mean- It is. No, it is. It is. - Could it not be anything else? Uhh, Santa’s workshop! I don't know. It’s a house. - Okay, okay. - Yeah, no I mean, I saw a truck and so I was going to buy that - but then I- I didn’t. I told you that it wasn’t a house. Well, I figured out that part. - It looks like you’ve got it all figured out. I did! - You’ve gotta put icing on the sides to get it to stay together- Do you- Chase. Chase. Do you know a thing about icing?
            • 21:00 - 21:30 - I mean, I know a little bit. No you don’t. You think you do. I thought I did. - You’ve got a nice table full of food here. I ate one of the walls- - Oh, you ate the whole wall? Yeah. - So do you not have enough walls? No, Chase, this is over. This is not happening. - You’ve gotta build something. I did! And then it fell apart and I couldn’t even see it happen. - Well, as per usual, - what time do you think it is? I don’t know. - Okay, okay.
            • 21:30 - 22:00 It’s either day four, five, or six. With Chase gone and gingerbread done, we're back to our regularly scheduled program of being very bored. Except now, I’m kind of used to it. I don't know what day it is, but I'm pretty sure I'm far into the latter half of the challenge. So if I keep doing what I've been doing, everything should be okay.
            • 22:00 - 22:30 The end. I think I'm done in a few hours. My eyes are confused and it's hard to stay positive. I won't pretend this isn't very difficult. It is. But I know I can get through it. Most valuable things are hard to reach. The darkness is not bad or good. It's just darkness. I am okay. And in the end, there is light. Now that I'm far into the challenge, there's something I wanted to try.
            • 22:30 - 23:00 Besides more gingerbread. I want to try meditating in complete darkness. You know, I'm probably not saying anything that people don't already know, but as I sit here in the darkness, of course, all I can think about is seeing the light again. and I think I can do that a lot of times with problems in my life. As I was just sitting here, looking around, I felt like I was just seeing it. And it's kind of embarrassing. You know, it could always be worse.
            • 23:00 - 23:30 And I hate to be that guy because of course I want things to be better, but I mean, come on! I've got my guitar, my ukulele, I've got Chase watching me, I've got a failed gingerbread experiment, and the journal. I mean, I've got the weights for exercise, I've got food, I've got water, I've got vitamin D. I mean, I've got- I've got what I need. And to think that out in the light when I can talk to my family and I can… see, you know, my problems now feel so, so small. I hate the idea of just being positive all the time about everything,
            • 23:30 - 24:00 but I mean, I think because of that I can forget how there is so much to be positive about, even when your world is completely dark. That's as cheesy as I'll get.
            • 24:00 - 24:30 See ya.
            • 24:30 - 25:00 Oh, it's bright. Oh, it's bright! Wow!
