            Chapters

            • 00:00 - 01:00: Introduction and Reacher Katie, an occupational therapy student from Bay Bath University, introduces herself and outlines the activity for the chapter: a guessing game followed by explanations. She invites participants to guess the identity of an item she shows them, promising to reveal and explain its purpose afterward.
            • 01:00 - 02:00: Doorknob Extender The chapter titled 'Doorknob Extender' discusses a tool referred to as a 'reacher'. This device is designed to aid individuals who have difficulty reaching objects due to mobility issues, such as those who are bound to a wheelchair. The reacher is particularly useful for picking up objects from the floor. It features a lever mechanism that allows users to open and close its end to grip items.
            • 02:00 - 03:30: Sock Aid and Shoe Funnel The chapter introduces assistive devices - the sock aid and shoe funnel - designed to help individuals with limited mobility or hand strength. The sock aid helps in putting on socks without bending, and the shoe funnel assists in easily sliding shoes onto feet. Additionally, a doorknob extender is mentioned, which aids those with hand weakness in opening doors more easily.
            • 03:30 - 05:00: Long Handled Comb and Nosy Cup This chapter discusses devices designed to assist individuals facing difficulties with commonly used objects—a long-handled comb and an adaptive door knob. The comb presumably assists those with limited dexterity in grooming their hair, although it's not explicitly described here, while the door knob adaptation enables those with limited hand functionality to open doors more easily. By using an attachment for a doorknob, one can open the door using a fist rather than needing to grasp the knob fully. This innovation caters to anyone with limited hand mobility by transforming the circular turning motion into one that is more accessible.
            • 05:00 - 06:30: Toileting Aid and Dressing Stick This chapter introduces the toileting aid and dressing stick, highlighting its purpose and functionality. It serves clients with mobility restrictions, particularly those who experience pain or have difficulty bending down to reach their feet.
            • 06:30 - 08:30: Button Hook and Pant Clip The chapter unveils a device aimed at easing the process of putting on a sock. A socket is attached to a sock and dropped to the floor using ropes. The individual simply needs to slip their foot into the sock, and the device securely positions the sock onto their foot. It provokes curiosity about potential applications.
            • 08:30 - 10:30: Conclusion The chapter named 'Conclusion' discusses a device designed to aid individuals who have difficulty bending down to put on their shoes. The device is compared to a long-handled shoehorn and assists users in placing it inside their shoes.

            Occupational Therapy Assistive Devices Transcription

            • 00:00 - 00:30 hi everyone my name is katie and i'm an occupational therapy student here at bay bath university and i just wanted to ask you a few questions and lead you through a short little quiz so i'm going to show you an item and i'm going to have you try to guess what it is and then i'm going to explain what that item is so the first item is this what do you think this is
            • 00:30 - 01:00 this is a reacher um so there are some individuals that have a hard time um getting things from maybe from the floor or their arms are not as mobile as they should be but especially for those individuals that are bound to a wheelchair this can be really helpful to pick things up from the floor there's a lever that you would press and it opens and closes the end so
            • 01:00 - 01:30 you can grab a cup bring it closer to you and now we have this this device is called a doorknob extender it's very useful for those individuals that might have weakness in their hands and
            • 01:30 - 02:00 it makes it hard for them to grasp regular circular doorknobs and it comes in several parts this the inside can unscrew and then this can be placed on the doorknob and fastened with the back and this allows the individual to open the door just by using their fist to turn it rather than having to open up their hand to grasp the doorknob and turn it that way
            • 02:00 - 02:30 for our next item we have this what do you think this is for those of you that said this is a socket you are correct so this can be used for those clients that aren't able to bend down to reach their feet due to mobility issues maybe they have pain
            • 02:30 - 03:00 so this would be you would take the socket and a sock and slip the sock onto the end of the socket then using these ropes you just drop the socket to the floor have the person slip their foot into the sock and slip the socket and ta-dah it's on your foot what do you think this could be used for
            • 03:00 - 03:30 for those of you that said that this is a shoe funnel you're correct so this device is useful for those individuals who are who have a hard time bending down to reach their feet when putting on their shoes it's similar to a long-handled shoe horn just a little different so you would take this device and place it inside
            • 03:30 - 04:00 the shoe like this and then you would drop the shoe to the floor place your foot inside and take it out what about this item
            • 04:00 - 04:30 this one should have been pretty easy it's a long handled comb it's for those people that might have difficulty moving their hand over their head to brush their hair so having this just makes it easier and now we have this
            • 04:30 - 05:00 this is a nosy cup so this would be used for those individuals that have a hard time or on are unable to bend their neck back to get the last sips of water or their drink from a cup so they would instead of having to do this they can just do this and their nose
            • 05:00 - 05:30 would not get in the way of the rim of a normal cuff what do you think this could be used for this is called a bottom bunny or a toileting aid so this is um an assistive device that's used to help those individuals that have
            • 05:30 - 06:00 a hard time completing perennial care after they use the bathroom and like that could be because of limited mobility pain maybe um their large size um so using this can help them to get to reach those places to clean themselves up after they use the bathroom so you would take this device and there's a switch so you would slide it up
            • 06:00 - 06:30 to open up the top put some toilet paper in there close it wrap the toilet paper around the head clean yourself up and then slide this the switch up to release the toilet paper and now we have this
            • 06:30 - 07:00 for those of you that said that this is a dressing stick you are correct so for those people that aren't able to get dressed because of limited mobility um this can really come in handy one end of it can be used as a shoe horn to slip on shoes and the other end can be used to put on pants shirts for example pants
            • 07:00 - 07:30 you can take a pair of pants drop it on the ground and have the person and sometimes it does take a while but it does get the job done
            • 07:30 - 08:00 and then once the person can reach the pins what do you think this could be used for for those of you that said that this is a button hook you're correct
            • 08:00 - 08:30 so sometimes people might um have weakness in one arm or maybe they had a surgery and they're not able to use one of their arms maybe they had a stroke and one half of their body is weaker than the other so this can help on individual button buttons with the use of just one hand so this the wire end of this button hook would go through the buttonhole and it would you'd hook one of the buttons and then
            • 08:30 - 09:00 move the button hook until you get the button through the loop and then you can do that with the rest of the buttons and then we have this what do you think this could be used for
            • 09:00 - 09:30 for those of you that said that this is a pant clip you're correct so for some individuals bending down may be tough so especially when using the bathroom the person will attach the pant clip one end of the pant clip to the shirt and the other to their pants they can slide their pants off
            • 09:30 - 10:00 use the bathroom and then instead of having to bend down to reach their pants they have this string that they can grab a hold on to and help them pull up their pants so as ots we strive to help our clients achieve meaningful purposeful and independent independence and functioning in their daily tasks so this can be achieved by providing some of the assistive devices that you were just introduced to so the binding hook the toileting
            • 10:00 - 10:30 aid the bottom buddy or the sake among many others are just a small small portion of what we as ots can do in order to help our clients be independent
