            • 00:00 - 00:30: Introduction and Opening Remarks The chapter focuses on the initial remarks that discuss the importance of collaboration between medical missionary workers and pastors, referencing Ellen White's statement about the potential harm caused by their separation. There is a reflection on whether this statement is an exaggeration or holds substantial truth, indicated by a past committee discussion.
            • 00:30 - 05:00: Ellen White's Teachings on Medical Missionary Work The chapter delves into Ellen White's teachings on medical missionary work. It starts with an anecdote involving a young minister who challenges a statement about 'the greatest evil,' suggesting that Ellen White used such strong language only in two instances. The discussion suggests that true leadership ('being the head and not the tail') can be achieved through spiritual harmony brought by a holistic gospel approach that addresses both physical and spiritual needs.
            • 05:00 - 10:00: Lifestyle Immersion and Missionary Training The chapter discusses the significance of medical missionary work in revitalizing Adventist outreach and effectiveness in connecting with the masses. Ron Kelly - The Prophetic Function Transcription

            • 00:00 - 00:30 Uh just a couple things before we get into the word. One is that uh Ellen White said years ago that the greatest evil to come upon the church would be the separation of the medical missionary workers from the pastors. Now, I was sitting in a committee meeting once and I said, 'Well, I don't know if that's ad I don't know if that's Ellen White hyperbole or what. And there
            • 00:30 - 01:00 was a young minister there and said, "No, it's not." And uh I went back and did a little looking. I think there's only two situations where she uses the phrase the greatest evil or the worst evil. I believe that the reestablishment of us being the head and not the tail will be when the harmony that the spirit brings with the power of a whole gospel which is both for the body and
            • 01:00 - 01:30 the mind as well as for the soul is back out in front. And I believe that the medical missionary work will be the final re-implementation of our Adventist effectiveness and our way of reaching the masses. Now, the institutions we have, praise the Lord for those, but I think the Lord's going to do out of those institutions amazing training that not only gives you head knowledge, but gives you heart knowledge and relational
            • 01:30 - 02:00 strength with people to go out. And as I mentioned last night um in our next to the last one that we did the last one when I was at village we had 10 participants and then you know we have trainers as well and the trainers were there for like 17 days the participants were there for 10. Dr. John Kelly who was the founding president of the college of lifestyle medicine is a researcher. He was in it before he became a doctor became a doctor in his 40s went to Linda second career.
            • 02:00 - 02:30 So he's been keeping data on how all of these lifestyle immersion reset programs work. And he says because we ended up doing I think we've done five in the village church now. He says the data for actual numerical change by testing the blood at the beginning and the end. He says the data is better in the churches than it is in the clinics. Now we need the clinics because churches aren't doing it all the time. And we need the clinics for training and a
            • 02:30 - 03:00 little more specialized care. And I told you last night, part of the new ministry I'm starting, we're going to build a lifestyle retreat center right there in Bering Springs. The new ministry I'm starting is going to be called Advent Mission Institute. If you want to remember it, ami365.org. And we're going to be joining with some of you and you don't want to miss this afternoon's presentation because it used to be the rank and file Adventist understood a lot about how to work with the human
            • 03:00 - 03:30 physiology and divine intervention for medical healing. But we don't know as much anymore and it's time to get it back. what God did with John Harvey Kellogg and uh the Western Health Reform Institute and later the Battle Creek Sanitarian put Adventists on the map. I mean we were very well known but we were well known for a holistic gospel care and some of you don't know that good low Harper Bell attributed as the first Sam's church till teacher was converted
            • 03:30 - 04:00 at the sanitarium. All right and there are others. So the power of the gospel to taste and see that it's good. Everybody gets sick and a lot of our sickness we brought on ourselves. So when we can give them good food, good fellowship and good education and then a new lease on life, there's a wellspring of gratitude in their heart for us and a great degree of confidence in what we're doing and they want to know more. So I encourage
            • 04:00 - 04:30 you uh this afternoon to be a part of that. Um, I want to I want to have a mission story to start with. We didn't have a regular Sabbath school, but what's a Seventh Day Adventist gathering without a mission story, right? And I've told this one before, but not everybody here has heard it, so I'm going to tell it again. You know, when I was a younger pastor, I had been too poor to go on any mission trips. And one day after I was in my early 30s, um, the book and Bible house manager walked by in the hallway,
            • 04:30 - 05:00 said, "We should go on a mission trip." I was at the Cisro Church, which was a little bigger church. It's like, yeah, we should do that. I'm a man of adventure. I love to travel. I didn't get to do much as a kid, but it's like, yeah, anywhere with Jesus, I can safely go. Let's go. And uh we went well, we started going every year. And I think I told you last night, but the crowd changes a little bit. The reason you go on mission trips is to build the bonds of unity, the living stones of 1 Peter
            • 05:00 - 05:30 chapter 2 that are to be jointly fitted together. You go on mission trips to bond with the people you went with. And you bring that bond, which is deeper, back with you. You also go to build churches and do medical clinics and build schools and and do vi vacation bible schools and health education. On the second trip we went to, we went to a suburb of Monterey, Mexico, which is the second largest city in Mexico and it was out on the u it was a little bario and it was out on the dusty edges of
            • 05:30 - 06:00 Monterey and it was surrounded by very gray barren mountains and I think there was a cement factory at one end of the valley and it produced a lot of pollution. Uh we drove the bus in the first day and the telephone wires were put up by makeshift poles and we had to get out, lift the telephone wires up to drive the bus under it. Very poor community. And by the way, mission trips need to be mission trips. All right. Uh you need to sacrifice and work at it and and have a powerful impact because you
            • 06:00 - 06:30 actually did sacrifice. Well, uh the foundation was in the ground. This was back when the Marinatha buildings were the old uh metal big I-beam infrastructure. And uh we decided while we were building that that we were going to create an opening in the back of the sanctuary to look out on the mountain range. Now it's not beautiful mountains like you had again just gray barren jagged peaks very dry place. And you know often times uh we had sensed the power of the Lord doing something
            • 06:30 - 07:00 special on our trip. But that trip came and went and we noticed nothing. We left and we went home. You can imagine how surprised we were when a few months later we got an email from uh one of the workers at Marinatha. And in the email they told this story that I'm about to tell you. When we drove into town, they have all these greeningos coming into the city. The little bario little suburb was obviously very noticeable. uh they wash us put these buildings up and the first
            • 07:00 - 07:30 thing another reason you take these mission trips is that in these third world countries your god's not very strong if he can't get you a meeting house and one of the things the Americans and the Canadians and the others can do the westerners that have a little more marginal resources is they can create meeting houses and by the way we need some of the fervor of the missionary lands to be bringing the missionary spirit back to us amen so um We had driven in. We had driven out day after day after day. Very
            • 07:30 - 08:00 dry place. We put that big window in and we thought, well, what'll happen? But what they do when they get a meeting house is they immediately hold evangelistic meetings. And there was a Pentecostal pastor living in that community who was not excited to have a Adventista mission house go up. So the flyers were given out probably by hand that there was going to be a meeting at this Advent mission house. And the the pastor, you know, in in Central America,
            • 08:00 - 08:30 they love their huge speakers and and they go around advertising onions for sale and tomatoes on the back of pickup trucks and great big megaphones. Well, I don't know if the Adventists just didn't have that or what, but they went to hold their meeting and the Pentecostal pastor realized that he was now up for some serious competition because this was the nicest church all around and the Adventists were aggressive missionaries. So on the evening of the meeting, he brought his big sound system with its amplifiers and huge speakers. And as
            • 08:30 - 09:00 soon as the preacher got up to start preaching, he turned on some not so complimentary music and turned it up real loud and you couldn't hear anybody in the building. And so the administrative form decided that something was going to have to happen here. Now mind you, God's people are peaceloving people. Amen. We're not looking to be in a rugged, unpleasant relationship with anybody. So they didn't go out and demand that he turn it off. They just got down on their knees and started to pray. Now there would have been nothing wrong with a conversation asking him to turn it down.
            • 09:00 - 09:30 Okay? And maybe there was one, but he didn't. So they' have got there on their knees and they started to pray. Now all the time we were there for those 10 days, I'm not sure there was hardly a cloud in the sky. But I know as they started to pray across that barren valley that separated them from those barren mountains, some clouds started to form. And the clouds started coming closer and closer. And wouldn't you know it, before long there was a downpour and the rain was so ferocious that the man
            • 09:30 - 10:00 had to rapidly unplug his equipment and get it out of the rain. And the Adventist meeting went went on. Praise the Lord. But you know, people being what they are, we can be a bit stubborn. And Adventists being what they are, they're quite persistent. The meeting was going to be going on other nights. So the next night the meeting went on, the Pentecostal pastor was prepared with his sound system again. And he uh sure enough, as soon as they started singing, he flipped the switch, cranked it up,
            • 10:00 - 10:30 and you know, you could see those those speakers vibrating the dust around them, and the Adventists thought, "Man, what are we going to do?" Well, God answered before, "We're going to pray again." They got down on their knees and they started praying and sure enough the clouds started forming across the valley on those great barren mountains and they started rolling towards and when they got very close they dumped a bucketload of water and the man had to quickly get his stuff out of the rain and the meeting went on. Now Adventist being what they are
            • 10:30 - 11:00 and the man being what he was, night number three was no different. But he was a smart Pentecostal preacher. And this night he came with a canopy above his equipment because he was a believer. Now, all right. And that night when everything started, he turned the he turned the amplifier on and started the music and those those big speakers were vibrating. And the Adventist thought, Lord, you've delivered once, you've delivered twice.
            • 11:00 - 11:30 Now we need another deliverance. So they got down on their knees and they started praying. Of course, the clouds did start to form across this very dry, desolate valley, and they started rolling in. But the Pentecostal people pastor thought, "They're not stopping me tonight cuz I've got my awning up." But what he didn't realize, you remember when Elijah went into the cave, there was the quake. There was the fire. And what else was there? There was a wind. And this night, the Lord sent a wind and he blew the canopy off. And the man had to get his
            • 11:30 - 12:00 stuff again. But the Lord wanted more. The Pentecostal pastor's wife was sensitive to the spirit. She had a dream. She said to her husband, "Quit persecuting the Adventist." Turned out their boy got sick. Now listen to me. Monelus has a medical school. Because there was now a little outpost for the Adventist. They brought their doctors and nurses up. They
            • 12:00 - 12:30 treated the boy and healed him. God healed him. I believe every single member of that Pentecostal pastor's family was eventually baptized. Folks, we are a people of mission. And I don't want to offend anybody here, but Adventists are a restless group. And if they're not on a mission, they're on to some wacko theology or some divisive dynamic. Listen, I've been a shepherd for the
            • 12:30 - 13:00 Adventist for 37 years, and I'm here to tell you, a kicking horse, a a pulling horse can't kick. And we're supposed to be pulling in the harness of the Gospel Commission. Now, I didn't want to be a pastor, but I did know what Ellen White said was true. She said, "The pastor's job is to put people to work." Well, the problem is it's a nonprofit. None of you are paid by me to work. And even in village, there was only a small group of people
            • 13:00 - 13:30 that were paid. You work for love, but you also work for respect and a high calling. I'm asking all of you to start thinking and praying about what God wants you to do in groups working together because working together will be a witness. And what God will do will show powerfully that his presence is among you and he will save you from going off on aberant theologies because you'll be
            • 13:30 - 14:00 too busy reaching the lost. A lot of our troubles are we've not fulfilled the mission. And if there's one thing God put in my heart from the very beginning is there's really only one reason for this church to exist and that's to find the people God wants us to find. Now, of course, we exist for each other, but our best blessing is in blessing. So, it's faith that works by love that purifies the soul. So, they told me in the beginning, don't
            • 14:00 - 14:30 say don't don't don't go down there to Mexico. Don't go to Villa de Garcia. Just send the money. The problem is if we would have just sent the money, we wouldn't have had the experience we've had. And it's very possible I wouldn't be standing before you here telling this story because I tell you what, every year for most years of my ministry, I take my church somewhere to do something. And let me tell you one more story while we're at it. Off to the east here in the very northeast corner of Montana, there's a uh an Indian re
            • 14:30 - 15:00 reservation called Fort Peek. on Fort Peek Indian Reservation, there's a beautiful um a beautiful new church and community center that's just about to open. When I came to village, they were broke, flat broke. That seems like most of the churches I went to, they had no money. It's like, why? Why do we have no money? Well, because we were just existing and you don't need a lot to
            • 15:00 - 15:30 just exist. And God didn't intend for us just to exist. But one of the first things I did with them because I was brought out by Gary and Marla Marsh to this reservation because I knew you want to bring a church to life, they've got to become other focused in the name of Jesus. Not just other focused, not just humanitarian work, it's care for the lost in the name of Jesus. We voted to give $50,000 to this ministry before we had any money. But it was important to me to start teaching my people how to move by
            • 15:30 - 16:00 faith, not by sight. We did it. We started. I mean, Gary had an inheritance from his dad who was a doctor in California. He used the inheritance to buy the property that was up for sale in a tax sale. The old hospital had been there. It had burned down and then it had become the dump. He used his inheritance money from selling that property to buy the property and clean it up. But one person can only go
            • 16:00 - 16:30 so far. That's when the village church stepped in and some others like Stevensville, etc. Along the way, there were other people that were motivated to give money, but there was a mistake that was made. Someone gave $5,000 to give to the project, but someone in your union accidentally wrote a check for $50,000. They sent it to the Montana
            • 16:30 - 17:00 conference and then when they finally figured out a mistake was made, I guess it's time for heads to roll, right? Wrong. It's time for people to gather and think about this. Your union decided not to ask for the money back. Can you say amen? Of course, it was in your union. And Matthew Kirk, who used to be the treasurer for the Monetana Conference, said to me, and I wrote it in the front of my old Bible. I go through a Bible
            • 17:00 - 17:30 about every 10 years. He said it was as if God picked up the pen and wrote the check himself. Now, I want to tell you, God's work done God's way will never lack for God's supply. Count on it. But he's going to let you go through a phase or two where you wonder. He's going to stretch you out. He's going to give you a chance to stand at your own little red sea and say, "I don't see any way across, Lord. Are you sure you brought me here?" He's going to let you put your foot in the water like going from one side of the Jordan to the
            • 17:30 - 18:00 other. And it's not going to be until you have your burden on your back and your foot in the water that he says, "All right, water. Time for you to stop flowing." I've watched God open up the spot and turn on the faucet over and over and over again. We don't have a money problem. We have a heart problem. We have a lack of mission problem. We have a lack of together problem. And we have a lack of faith problem. God's not going to start it over without teaching us what we need to know to go. It's the mission. You know what was it that Clinton said back
            • 18:00 - 18:30 during his election cycle? Is the economy stupid? Well, I don't like to use the word stupid, but I will tell you this. It's the mission that is the catalyst for the opportunity of growth. All right, let's do something a little bit different now. Take your Bibles if you would and open them up to the book of Proverbs, chapter 29. Proverbs chapter 29. And by the way, our mission needs to be in our neighborhood. It needs to be in our
            • 18:30 - 19:00 home. Foreign mission. However, God does give a promise to Ellen White that there's a reflex influence. And last I checked, whenever you have a reflex, it happens without you having to think about it. When the doctor hits the front of my knee with a rubber mallet, my foot jumps out because I'm in good health. Proverbs chapter 29 looking at verse 18 it says where there is no vision the people what the people perish. Now the
            • 19:00 - 19:30 new American standard says where there is no vision the people are unrestrained but happy is he who keeps the law. Now when I came to village 11 plus years ago everybody wanted me to start something new do something new and uh William Gersonner who turned IBM around when he came to the company it's been probably two plus decades ago he said the last thing everybody wanted to say what's your vision what's your vision he said the last thing IBM needs right now is a vision statement I want to be careful what I'm
            • 19:30 - 20:00 saying uh vision and mission statements are kind of a fad and you know most of my most of my life as a pastor, I've not had a mission statement. I've just had a mission life and I've known what our job is. And by God's grace, others have joined me and he has sent people to join me. And he has built teams and mentalities and resolves. But I want to talk to you this morning about the prophetic role in the 7th Day Adventist Church because this is not about a business vision. This is
            • 20:00 - 20:30 actually about prophetic vision. And that's why the New American Standard says, "Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained." Now, in the book of Corinthians, Paul talks about the role of the gift of prophecy to edify, to exhort, and to comfort. Now, I want you to think about that for a minute. Paul will tell us that he would he would rather a few words be spoken in tongues, but he wishes that everybody had the gift of prophecy. Now, I'm going to
            • 20:30 - 21:00 expand your understanding of the gift of prophecy because the gift of prophecy is not about telling the future as much as it is about telling the truth in the present. And the role of the prophet is to save the church from being becoming discouraged or proud. And so all throughout the history, we see the prophetic role in place. And I want to remind everybody how we can discern what the remnant
            • 21:00 - 21:30 church is. All right, go over to the book of Revelation 12. And let's just remind ourselves from the Bible what the prophetic church is identified by. Revelation 12 looking at verse 17. It says in Revelation 12 verse 17, the dragon was enraged with the woman. All right. Now, if I've been watching the lay of the land
            • 21:30 - 22:00 lately, I would say that while the dragon may be enraged, I don't think so. The dragon has been playing the snake and he's been slithering through our culture saying, "Did the church really used to do or does the Bible really say?" But pretty soon the battle's going to break out in the wide open again and the devil's going to be enraged and he's going to think, "I've got them in a full Nelson and I'm going to take them out this
            • 22:00 - 22:30 time." Now, in the early days of the apostolic work, the devil was enraged because the church was going forth conquering and to conquer. You couldn't stop him. If you were in Ephesus, they'd say he's turned the whole city, the whole region upside down. If you were the Roman governor, you realize there's a book entitled The Destroyer of the Gods. And the author, I think it's Baylor Press, the author says that in the period of three centuries, the Christian
            • 22:30 - 23:00 church crushed the Roman pantheon of gods. And the reason when we talk today, we talk about, well, who is God? And we don't use the plural gods, is because Christianity with its monotheistic belief crushed the Roman pantheon of multiplicities of gods. The devil was enraged. Persecution, exile, execution. Now, it's coming back
            • 23:00 - 23:30 again. And God is waking us up. But I want to I want to disabuse you of the idea that the spirit of prophecy is a bunch of books sitting on your your your shelves. And I I've always been indebted to Dwight Nelson who said, "We shouldn't call them the little red books. You should call them the unread books. Now, if you want extra light in the midst of the darkness, that's how you get it. Read
            • 23:30 - 24:00 your Bible, pray every day, and you'll what? Grow, grow, grow. You want to expand your understanding and be more united for the sophistries, the lies that are going around, read the spirit of prophecy every day and pray and you'll grow, grow, grow, too. And you know, I don't think I've I've I don't know that I've heard any other minister ever say that the age of Eli with the youthful Samuel, this is as it should be. But I've heard it. I I actually have
            • 24:00 - 24:30 a ninth quarter specialty in youth ministry from my master's of divinities degree. And I've been told through myriad sources that young people are special and different. And the young people have been told that, too. That's why they think people with gray hair have nothing to say that's intelligent about their experience. Like you were never their age before and like life is somehow changed and like they're actually special. Well, I want to tell you something. It's a very special time of life because as one person said to me,
            • 24:30 - 25:00 "Pastor, it's just not fair." And I said, "What's not fair that you you get to make all the big decisions that can ruin your life when you don't know anything?" That's why the Bible says, "Rise up in the presence of a great-headed man found in the way of righteousness." That's why the fifth commandment says, "Honor your father and mother so you don't destroy the foundation and you have to live in a cardboard shack instead of a skyscraper." So, if you're young and listening to me today, remember something. There's nothing new under the sun according to this book. Which means
            • 25:00 - 25:30 that your youth is not any distinctly different than anybody else's. It's just you have more temptations and you've been lied to more than anybody else. So reading the spirit of prophecy is a measure of the idea of the gift. But I'm here to tell you that the gift of prophecy, the spirit of the prophets is to be in every heart and every home. And that's why Paul would say, "I don't need but three or four
            • 25:30 - 26:00 words in tongues, but I wish you all had the gift of prophecy." Now, I want you to think about this. Revelation 12:1 17, the devil or the dragon was enraged with the woman and went to make war with the remnant. The rest of her children and keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. All right. The testimony of Jesus. What's another word for that? Turn over to Revelation 19:10. Let's let the Bible
            • 26:00 - 26:30 define itself. Revelation 19:10. Uh John has taken in an awful lot of information. We're coming to the end of the book and he's about to he's being shown these amazing things. And in verse 9, it says, "Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb." And he said to me, "These are true words of God." And John in exuberance and unbelief, disbelief almost, fell at his feet to worship him.
            • 26:30 - 27:00 It's like, "This is too good to be true. We're at the end. But he said to him, this is the angel, do not do that. I am a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of the prophets. It's the spirit of prophecy.
            • 27:00 - 27:30 Now I was the last person well one of the last I was there were several who spoke at the general conference autumn council in 2019 before co struck. I was invited by Elder Wilson. I was thankful for that opportunity and strangely enough uh the focus was on health and for some reason when I went
            • 27:30 - 28:00 to prepare the Lord said to me, "You're going to talk about the spirit of prophecy." Now, there's a lot in the spirit of prophecy on health, isn't there? But what God wanted me to see and show all those leaders as a preacher of righteousness was that the gift of prophecy was to abide in the heart of every single member of the remnant. And that it wasn't it it was while it was uniquely given for the inception and the
            • 28:00 - 28:30 growth of the church. It was to be in the heart of every father and mother of every pastor and teacher. It was to be a fabric of encouragement for edification. That's the building up. So for those that go around using the writings of Ellen White as a club, please pause. Ellen White says you can be as frank as you want with yourself, but be nice with everybody else. All right? And of course, the Bible does talk about being
            • 28:30 - 29:00 frank, but you the Bible says the wounds of a friend can be trusted. But you better be a pretty good friend. But what what is to be happening is that we are to have a church that allows the Holy Spirit self to operate to edify, to exhort. Now, this is where it gets a little tricky. Who are you to reign on my parade? Who are you to Oh, here we go. We need a good book in Adventism. Are there any theologians, preachers,
            • 29:00 - 29:30 teachers, or parents in the house that would be willing to study the word judge in the Bible? Because we've turned it into the concept of the most dysfunctional relationship where nobody can ever tell you you're doing anything wrong or they're judging you. Last I checked, the Bible says the righteous rejoice when there are righteous judges. uh we're headed rapidly towards a third world uh administrative function where everything's about money and dishonesty and who knows who. But there is value in
            • 29:30 - 30:00 people that actually know how to call right right and wrong wrong. And if you've been on the wrong side of something, you're praying for vindication. And sometimes that comes through people who hold power. Exhorting somebody is very much out of fashion. What is in fashion is running down all the people who supposedly laid the burden of guilt on me that I can't get out from under. And I'm not saying there's not been any form of spiritual abuse, conservative religious religions
            • 30:00 - 30:30 are prone to a measure of conservative of religious abuse where you don't give a person a right to be their own person and you constantly badger and guilt them through manipulation into being what you want them to be. You know, I I think the world of people who care enough to homeschool their kids. I did have somebody from somewhere in this big wide world call me a few months ago. And there is there is one downfall that I've noticed with homeschooling and we did some
            • 30:30 - 31:00 homeschooling ourselves. And that is there's such a deep investment on the parents behalf that it's hard for the parents to let the kids be their own person when they get to a certain age. And the dynamic of protection and control can rob the child of its proper autonomy. And I want you all to think about that. And this person was trying to make a decision and they were trying to actually be thoughtful to their parents. But it appeared that maybe the parents were struggling with the dynamics of the individuality of this now 20some person.
            • 31:00 - 31:30 Exhorting somebody still gives them the place to make their own mind up. But it does take a little bit of courage to say, "What are you doing that for? You're going to mess your life up." I've had to do plenty of exhorting in my life. But then there's a third role of comforting. If you really read through the spirit of prophecy in the Bible, what you find out is that God's message to one of the primary prophets, Isaiah,
            • 31:30 - 32:00 was comfort my people. And when you read the full spectrum of Ellen White, especially not the compos the compilations, what you find out is is that the lady is amazingly broad-hearted, deep-minded, and practical, reasonable. But the spirit of prophecy, that's to exist in the very fabric of God's remnant people. They keep the commandments of God. So what happens if we quench or quell the spirit of the
            • 32:00 - 32:30 prophets? Let's just do a quick little survey. Where do we first find the spirit of the prophets operating in the Bible? Any guesses? You don't have to get very far, do you? Book of Genesis. My guess is it was a little bit of a prophetic role for the angels and for God to tell Adam and Eve, "Stay away from the tree and don't eat it." And by the way, Jesus was prophet, priest, and king, right? Amen. He was killed because he was prophet. He's in
            • 32:30 - 33:00 heaven as priest and he will come again as king. So let's remember he fulfilled all three roles. But the ro the role that got him killed, the role that got Steven stoned, the role that got Paul stoned, the role that got people with their their, you know, thrown in jail and so on into that's the prophetic role. And you can see why a lot of people don't sign up for it. But I want to tell you, woe be unto the child who doesn't have a prophetic mom and a prophetic dad who knows how to, you know, edify, exhort. You give them
            • 33:00 - 33:30 the buildup first. And when they're deviating, you give them the what, too, and then you comfort them when they need it, when they blow it, like kids do sometimes, and you bring them back. Doesn't work any different in the church. But when we're not close enough to have any exhortation, we're going downhill fast. You get a society in which nobody can tell anybody they're doing something dumb and making a mistake, you're going downhill fast. And I want to tell you, of all the things that have made the churches strong that I've been in, it's been wisely,
            • 33:30 - 34:00 patiently, prayerfully looking for the right time to have the exhortation discussions so that people can make decisions. But on my watch, I'm not letting them go over the cliff to self-induce predition. The Bible says if I tell you to talk to somebody and you don't do it, their blood is on your hands. And that's not just for preachers. That's for elders, deacons, and parents. It's for pastors. It's for teachers. It's for administrators. By
            • 34:00 - 34:30 the way, the administrative function of the Adventist church is a pastoral administration. It's not a political administration. And this is an important distinguishment. Pastors will guard the sheep at the expense of their own loss. And Jesus went out of his way to say, "Beware of false prophets. Beware when all men speak well of you. For so did they the false prophets who came before you." And he said, "Beware of the hierling who runs when he sees the wolf approaching."
            • 34:30 - 35:00 If you want your church to grow, it's going to only grow as high as the collective will of the leaders to go to a better level of functionality. And in the end, because it's a church, it's a nonprofit, nobody has to listen to anybody, in the end, the people that God affirms and that have enough emotional maturity will end up leading the church to healthiness. Now, I do want to say something that I've said a lot of
            • 35:00 - 35:30 places, not embarrassed to repeat it. I had a very intelligent mathematician tell me the easiest way around personal growth is, any of you heard me preach this before? The easiest way around personal group growth is formal education. You can go into school very self-centered, very emotionally stunted. You can come out with a degree that allows you to make a lot of money, get catapulted up over the rest of the pack,
            • 35:30 - 36:00 and still be a very small-minded, low EQ, low intelligence, low-level maturity person. So, the more you've been given, the more you need other people in your life to say, "Hey, wait a minute there, Buster. We just don't do things like that around here. I once had a church. I haven't had that many, but I'll still leave you guessing which one it was. Um, I don't talk about this one
            • 36:00 - 36:30 very often, but I once had a church that was built by a contractor who was the wealthiest person in the church. He built a church and he was the wealthiest pe person in the church. Now, this did not happen when I was pastor, but my mentor pastor had pastored the same church. And he said every time they had a board meeting before the board would vote, they'd always look to this man. Now mind you, if this man is aligned with God's appointed pasture and they're in the same spirit and the spirit is God's spirit, their teamwork can be
            • 36:30 - 37:00 powerful. But if this person has somehow gotten confused with what his proper level of control or influence is, this can be a huge problem. When I went to that church, that p that that member was still there. And one day, we set up my mother-in-law who's a nurse and a health educator. She can't do it anymore because she's almost 90 and not mobile. She had the tables set up just how she wanted. This man came in and moved the tables without talking to her. I think I move them
            • 37:00 - 37:30 back and then he caught me outside and was going to talk to me and he grabbed me by the arm. Well, that's just not how you relate to other adults. And we had an iron sharpening iron moment. He was probably 40 years older than me. I showed him respect. But I also made it clear that he had to show other people respect. That man was a genuine Christian. He was just missing somebody that would fulfill a prophetic role in his life. And when I left, God called me
            • 37:30 - 38:00 away to another church. He actually called the conference up and said, "Please don't take him." What I'm trying to show you is if in the nobility of Christ you do what's right, do the right thing the right way at the right time for the right reason, you will eventually win the favor of most reasonable people. But a lot of leaders don't understand this. So they they take the shortcut and please the masses. Even if that means they maintain the systemic dysfunction, can't do it. Now to God's
            • 38:00 - 38:30 glory, that man made a change. But you know when Abel said to Cain, "What are you doing?" That was the prophetic function. When we come up to the experience of David in 2 Samuel 11, we know that he didn't go out with the army to fight like he should have. And there's a type for today. There's a metaphor. Instead,
            • 38:30 - 39:00 he stayed home and he enjoyed the luxuries of his midlife successes and he ended up taking another man's wife. In 2 Samuel 12, there's a very wise prophet who shows up and says, "There was a little family that had a little lamb, and the rich guy who had lots of sheep took that little lamb and ate it for supper when a guest came. And David, David was not so far gone that his heart which had been shaped by the animals. And by the way, put your
            • 39:00 - 39:30 kids around animals. Teach them. Let them love these animals. It will develop them well. He stands up and he says, "That man's going to die." And Nathan looks at him and he says, "That man is you." Nathan was wise, but he was courageous and brave. And there's no forward progress in an evil world without some love and courage. And by the way, cowardice and fearfulness are the first thing on the list of Revelation 21 of those who are outside
            • 39:30 - 40:00 the city. And you know why? Because fear is the first fruit of a selfish life that looks out for itself. And it is the it is the easiest to to accelerate in the devil's paniply of tools. And in the end, it's love that overcomes fear and is willing to suffer. If we go a little farther in the book of 2 Samuel, we find David in 2 Samuel chapter 24 and he's about to do something dumb again. What is it? It's
            • 40:00 - 40:30 got a number. Is there anybody that stands up to him? Yeah, Joab does of all people. I mean, here's Joab that's killed two people in innocent blood, but he has a little bit of sense. And I'm gonna give something to Joab. Jo has enough guts even though he himself could have been, you know, executed. He has enough guts, enough love for for his uncle David. You know, this is his uncle. So was Abashai, his nephew. They were the sons of Zariah,
            • 40:30 - 41:00 his big sister. David's big sister. No, no, Zariah is a woman. And it turns out that Joab can't stop him. But he was at least a speed bump to say, "What are you doing?" When we come down to the New Testament, we have Jesus confronting Peter in Matthew chapter oh, what do we got here? 26 or so. It's the prophetic rule.
            • 41:00 - 41:30 You're all going to leave me. No, we're not. No, we're not. Peter is the most resistant. And he says, "They might all run away." Doesn't the Bible say something about pride goes before destruction and a hotty spirit before a fall? They might all run away, but not me. And what's Jesus say, "Peter, before the sun's up tomorrow morning, you will have gone farther than
            • 41:30 - 42:00 any of them. You will have denied that you even know me." And do you know how Jesus went to Gethsemane with Peter saying under his breath, "No, no, no. I want to tell you Jesus is a prophet in the role of edification, exhortation, and comfort to his own 12 disciples as is appropriate. He says lots to Peter and almost nothing to Judas until they're at the feast at Simon's house. At the feast at Simon's house, which is
            • 42:00 - 42:30 the last Sabbath, it's the Sabbath after Good Friday. It's the last Sabbath he'll have a Sabbath meal before he's crucified. And in comes Mary. And she anoints his feet with that expensive perfume. And Judas starts a rumor. How do I know this? Desire of Ages and the Bible. Judas starts the rumor. And pretty soon they're all saying, "Yep, yep. Shouldn't have wasted that money. That could have gone to the poor." And Jesus confronts them all and he says, "Leave her
            • 42:30 - 43:00 alone. She has done a good thing." And I'm guessing he was looking right at Judas because Ellen White says that wrankled his spirit. He got up and left the Sabbath table and he went and struck a deal on Sabbath to sell Jesus. Yeah, the prophetic world is pricey. How about Peter and Paul? Should we look this one up? Go to the book of Galatians. Let's go to the book of Galatians. I don't want to forget this one. In the book of Galatians, we have the story of two mighty men, but one
            • 43:00 - 43:30 lost his way for a little bit. Galatians chapter 2 and Paul can't believe what's happened in Galatia and he tells this story about being in Antioch with Peter and Barnabas. Galatians 2 11 but when Cphus came to Antioch that's Peter I opposed him to his face because he stood
            • 43:30 - 44:00 condemned. Now there's a new take on exhortation. It's not that I'm judging you. It's that you've already been judged and I'm just letting you know you're on the wrong side of judgment. I wish you'd think about it, friends. Now, be careful. Nobody sets you up to be what Wayne Blakeley says, the Holy Spirit, Jr., but if the Holy Spirit does prompt you to speak the words to a friend and you don't speak them, their blood is on your hands. Verse 12. For prior to coming of
            • 44:00 - 44:30 certain men from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing the party of the circumcision. Now, mind you, I said in the last sermon, and I'm going to say here again, peer pressure is a lifelong temptation to all of us. I can tell you right now, I think there are scads of pastors who believe that what happened to me wasn't right. But
            • 44:30 - 45:00 very few seem to be willing to speak up and say, "That wasn't due process. That wasn't fair. That wasn't right." And I'm just here to tell you that humanity never outgrows the dynamics of its insecurity unless it finds its security in Christ and in other meaningful relationships. Everybody listening to me to here today is as human as everybody else. Everybody struggles with a sense of selfworth. But when they find meaningful human relationships and most of all a sense of
            • 45:00 - 45:30 their sunship or daughtership with God, then they actually get the confidence where they could actually suffer in the name of love. Amen. But I just want to remind you, everybody is a leaky vessel and the sense of our own self-respect drains out freely and naturally often because of the stupid and terrible things we do or say. And I wish I could exempt myself from that category, but I can't. But I am awfully glad that I'm married to my wife who is the most
            • 45:30 - 46:00 affectionate person that I know. And I'm just going to remind you all as we do in our marriage talks, you're either a fountain or a drain. Yeah, I want you all to think about that. Jesus told the woman at the well, you've been a drain, but I'm going to make you a fountain. And every other person should be that. If you can never give out a compliment, if you can never say anything good about somebody, you're probably dealing with a spiritual disease of self- condemnation, not
            • 46:00 - 46:30 understanding what God's done for you, or else a lack of full surrender. And of course, we all have to face some of those things at times, but really pathologically negative people. They don't understand the gospel and they don't understand the love of God or they're very worldly and they want to keep a pretense of religion up. And part of how they feel better about them is seeing what's not right with you. But you're either a fountain or a drain. The Bible says the mouth of the righteous is like a tree of
            • 46:30 - 47:00 life. So you should be a fountain. But here's Peter, insecure Peter. Take heart. You face your insecurities even as a middle-ag or older, take heart. So did everybody else in the Bible. And so here's Peter. He's quit eating with the unclean or common folks that aren't Jews. And Paul's saying to himself, "What is going on?" Now, mind you, this is
            • 47:00 - 47:30 Peter. This is the one who said, "You tell us whether it's right that we should obey God or man." This is the man who could sleep with 16 guards guarding him, and one has to strike him in the side to wake him up to say, "We're out of here." This is the same guy. But now the institution at Jerusalem is coming up. They're not quite of the same mindset down there in Jerusalem. So, I'm going to stop sitting
            • 47:30 - 48:00 at the table with those guys and those gals. And when Peter finds out, when Paul finds out about it, he's not too careful about where the confrontation takes place. As a matter of fact, the Bible says, "In the presence of all," go down just a little bit farther says verse 14, "But when I saw they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cphus, in the presence of all, if you being a Jew live like the Gentiles and not like the
            • 48:00 - 48:30 Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live as Jews?" Now, mind you, this would have been an exceptionally uncomfortable moment, but the gift of prophecy was at work, and it was protecting the community from sometimes the bad faith actions of good men and women. And what I want to say to all of you tonight is this. You actually do owe
            • 48:30 - 49:00 something to the person that goes to church with you. And you owe a lot to the person that shares the roof you share and your kids. And just because they're grown up now and out from under your roof and because they're over 18 doesn't exempt you from continuing to wisely, carefully, properly be prompted by the Holy Spirit to say what you should say when you should say it. Because the last thing you want is to be in heaven without them. And there are some people that are teaching in the name of maintaining the
            • 49:00 - 49:30 relationship that you compromise your relationship with God. Last I checked, the Bible says those children were his first lent to you as a gift. And last I checked in the story of the prodal, he basically gave a message to the older son and the younger son. I'm not changing. I love you both. And this is how it is. The gift of prophecy requires enough love for God,
            • 49:30 - 50:00 for the rest of his sheep through for your brothers and sisters that you actually sometimes risk the relative peace and joy of the relationship in hope that something wrong can be made right, something dysfunctional can become functional. Now, I have four kids. I can tell you that some of them are more like me, pity them, than some of the others. But one of them is especially like me. And for probably a period of over a
            • 50:00 - 50:30 year, he didn't even want to talk to me. I like to see these people chuckle a little bit when I say these things. He got over it. Come on, friends. He got over it. All right. Sometimes I need to say I'm sorry. Sometimes he needs to say he's sorry. But you know what? I'm a generation older than him. I've been through the school of life. Some people call it the school of hard knocks. I love him. I remind my kids I washed their diapers out. It wasn't the kind
            • 50:30 - 51:00 that you threw away in the toilet. I cleaned up their vomit. I got up in the middle of the night. I spent all my money. I got all this gray hair trying to turn them into decent human beings so you could interact with them. All right. I didn't abandon being a dad because they turned 18. And this one I'm thinking of right now used to threaten that he was going to go join the army. I said, "Well, go right ahead. That's the next closest thing to being in prison. Now, I respect the armed forces and I'm thankful, but you do
            • 51:00 - 51:30 surrender a lot of your personal rights when you sign up. All right? And I'm appreciative of the ones who did. So, don't take that as an offense. He just used to use it as a threat. It's like, it's your life. Do with it what you want. But while you're under my roof, there are some basic delineations of behavior. I'm not preaching anything new under the sun. These things have been handed down through generations. The prophetic role, hear me carefully now. My mother was a better prophet to her
            • 51:30 - 52:00 four kids than many Seventh Day Adventist parents have been to theirs because she never deviated from her principal system of right and wrong. My mother called me out once as a young man before I was married. my wife to be bought me a pair of dress shoes and paid for them. Their family was better off than my family. I was a poor young guy. My mother challenged me
            • 52:00 - 52:30 as to whether or not I should be letting her do those kinds of things. My mother, she didn't understand the uh comforting side as much sometimes and and maybe not always the edifying side, but she did know this. her kids were going to at least understand right from wrong best she understood it. She loved me enough even as an adult she would challenge me at times. And what I want to get the point
            • 52:30 - 53:00 across to you today is the Bible says the wounds of a friend can be trusted but an enemy multiplies kisses. We have a very low standard of expectation from people nowadays and we have an awful lot of esteemism. So, there's a lot of kisses going around, but there's not an awful lot of the wounds of a friend. Now, of course, if you're not close enough to give the wound of a friend, the devil laughs at that, too. So, you remember last night I told you the new watch word for me that I learned
            • 53:00 - 53:30 in the last 10 or 11 years of pastoring is bond, bond, bond. Create teams. You know those Greek fallances? I wish I had a diagram up, but the Greek soldiers would march so close together and every row in perfect lock step behind them and every soldier in every row had a little bit longer spear and you just could not divide these people. They would march in like a ballistic weapon and and they would impale and
            • 53:30 - 54:00 destroy people. Now, if you could get them to separate, you could undo the whole thing. What I want you to gather in this last little bit is this. All throughout the Bible, by the way, Mrs. White, those minor prophets, she says they are written more for us than for the people that got the letters. So, we probably ought to read them. But here's the deal. Edwin Freeman
            • 54:00 - 54:30 in his book, Failure of Nerves, says this. Most people would rather live with chronic pain than go through the cure which acquires acute pain. And that's true of churches and families. So what I want to say to all tonight is this this afternoon. If you want to grow, you'll have to remember that there's nothing new under the sun. And
            • 54:30 - 55:00 the same coach who might rant and rail on you and basically tell you you can do better and I know it are actually the ones who bring out the best and create the greatest successes. That prophetic spirit that says, "I love you. I believe in you." And by the way, if you have to do this with a with a uh administrational person farther up the line, always pray for somebody before you do this and let them
            • 55:00 - 55:30 know you and don't have any animus or vitrial. But you're not exempted from talking to somebody whether they're your your pastor or your elder or your administrator. The spirit of prophets, the spirit of the prophets is to be in all of us. And it's a safeguard to every single one of us. And effectively, if you can stifle the spirit of the prophets, you can assure unmitigated,
            • 55:30 - 56:00 uncontrolled, and unsafe power in the structures of power. And I want you to think about this. Now, I'm of the opinion that the future of the church, if it is to be brought back to a proper calibration, is going to be done by the lay people. I'm not exempting the pastors, but what happened to me has had a chilling effect on the spirit of prophecy. I don't mean Ellen White. I mean the greatest want of the world. You
            • 56:00 - 56:30 know that want of men who can't be bought or sold. Who in their inmost souls are true? Who don't fear to call sin by its right name. Who is true to duty as an eagle to the pole. And who will stand for the right though the what? Though the heavens fall. If we want a church that's identified as the remnant from start to finish, then we're going to have to have words of edification, words of exhortation, and words of comfort.
            • 56:30 - 57:00 But if you skip the exhortation, if there's never a rebuke that there is no call to higher ground, you just read First Corinthians. You want a rugged letter, read it. That's the prophetic voice of Paul. Nobody paid a higher price for the starting of the of the apostolic church other than Jesus than Paul. He'll say later on, he says in the book of Galatians, "Have I become your enemy because I told you the truth?
            • 57:00 - 57:30 And I'm going to remind you, you can only resolve a problem with an honest person. But sometimes your attempt to resolve it shakes them up enough to do some more honest thinking. Friends, pray, pray, pray, pray, pray before you have to have a prophetic moment. Don't let anything be in your heart. Follow Matthew 18. Follow Leviticus 19, which says, "Speak frankly with your brother. Don't harbor sin in your heart. Don't don't suffer sin on their account. And love your neighbor as yourself." Put it in your
            • 57:30 - 58:00 head. If there's one thing that has changed the churches I've been in, it's a little bit of that mother I had with a bit of the spirit of the prophets. Even though hers was very truncated because she wasn't walking with God, but to her own value system, she was very true. Then it's the living Christ through the Holy Spirit and the teachings of the Bible. And then it's the broader flood light of the spirit of prophecy. It's a lot of prayer and patience. It's not rushing in to be the great superhero, but it's not running
            • 58:00 - 58:30 away when somebody needs to say like that tank man in Tianaan Square. I'm standing right here and when the tank moves, I'm moving now. It it it gets a bit costly at times, but I want to tell you this. You'd be better off being able to lay your head down on your pillow knowing that you did what Jesus said to do. And even if you might mess it up and think you need to say you're sorry because maybe you didn't do it perfectly right. But please quit naval
            • 58:30 - 59:00 gazing. Some of the Adventists are so worried about did I do it right? Did I do it right? What I like to tell people is would you love the person and do the best you can and get on with it. If you made a mistake, you can say you're sorry. But the biggest mistake a lot of us are making is we're looking out for ourselves. We don't want to strain the relationship. We don't want to say anything bad about us. Well, there's a lot of people going to hell on that plan. And I want you to think about it. The last thing I'm planning to give up, I mean, that prodal father, when the
            • 59:00 - 59:30 big brother wouldn't come in, what'd he do? He went out and he said, "Look, what I've done is right. Your brother was dead and now he's alive." He stood up to the youngest one in the first part of the story, and he stood up to the old one in the last part. Friends, that's why the Bible says, "Choose elders that know how to rule their own household." Well, they know when to pray. They know when to speak. And they know when to be quiet, but they're not afraid. May God help us. There's a lot
            • 59:30 - 60:00 going on in this church over the next five weeks. Be a praying person. Let God do whatever he needs to do. But most of all, do justly, love mercy, walk humbly. In that order, figure out what's right first, then do it nicely, and then be humble about it. Because you could be the next person in line needing Peter to show up or Paul to show up in your house and say, "What are you doing?" It's what makes the world go round. Jesus was the ultimate prophet.
            • 60:00 - 60:30 The Holy Spirit is still convicting the world of sin, of judgment, and of righteousness. May he be allowed to convict us. May we be a part of the system that has identified healthy families, healthy countries, healthy organizations throughout all time.
