What No One Tells You About Building a Minimalist Capsule Wardrobe (5 Essential Steps) I shesfrench Transcription

            • 00:00 - 00:30 If you're feeling overwhelmed with your closet, this is how you're going to fix [Music] it. Hi everyone, welcome back to my YouTube channel, She's French. And if you're new, welcome. Thank you so much for clicking on today's video. Welcome back to my minimalist closet series. I forgot what my official title for this series is, but this is going to be video number four. In the first video, we talked about like the kind of minimalist
            • 00:30 - 01:00 closet 101. Then we talked about my favorite pieces, things that I think would be good to have. And then we talked about what perhaps you should get rid of. And today we're going to talk about how to build the closet in five steps. I tried to make it a little bit condensed for this one. And we're going to go beyond the articles of clothing that you may need. We're going to talk about personal style, color palettes, things like that that will give you the tools to build the closet rather than just like go out and buy a pair of jeans, go out and buy a white tea, blah
            • 01:00 - 01:30 blah blah. This is super important to talk about because it's going to help you to keep it going. It's not going to be okay, I decluttered, now what? Minimalism is not just about decluttering and not having a lot, but I think it's all about also how you consume and making smart decisions. And sometimes it does take a little bit of organization and kind of like clarity and finding yourself to make it really work. This is hard by the way. I've been doing this for a long time. I still make mistakes all the time. But these are kind of the things I try to remind
            • 01:30 - 02:00 myself when I go about my closet. And if you're wondering why I think I'm equipped to make this video, I'm going to add a little clip of what my closet looks like. If you're new, um, if you've been around, you know my closet. But if you're new, you'll see that I have a very curated, very, very small amount of clothing, but I love it. I never struggled to get dressed. I wasn't always like this. I've been doing this for a long time, but I did come from a place where I had a ton of clothes. And I felt like I couldn't get dressed every day. You know, I would open my closet and be like, "Oh my god, I don't know what to wear today. I don't know what to
            • 02:00 - 02:30 do." Um, I don't have that problem anymore, which sounds counterintuitive because there's not much, but I promise you, I feel the best I've ever felt. It's easy and I absolutely love it. And I want you guys to get to a place like that if you're interested in doing so. But I mean, you're here. So, yeah. And before we start, if you're not yet subscribed, I would love to invite you to subscribe. It helps me out so much. You know, I'm a small creator. Um, and I need those subscribes, guys. It helps me so so much. I'm getting really close to
            • 02:30 - 03:00 4K, so I'd love your help to get there. If you want to check me on Instagram, my Instagram is @ she's French, just like the channel, but I post more casually about my life in Paris. And then I have a really cute LOI channel. I will link it below. It's called Wendy Melody and a really cute sticker shop that I will link below as well. And I'd love for you to check both of those out. If you're planning to go through your closet and declutter, I think my little playlist will be the perfect background music while you do it. So that'll be below. But anyway, let's get started with the video. So step one is going to be to
            • 03:00 - 03:30 audit your closet. And you're not going to love me for this, but you have to do it. pull everything out when you do this. I promise you, it is so helpful. Also, when you declutter, whatever you're doing, when you're analyzing things, and this goes for everything beyond your closet as well, take things out of the like comfortable little home that you made for them cuz it helps you to really like truly evaluate the stuff when you're looking at it. Take everything out. Go item by item. You won't be doing this a ton, you know,
            • 03:30 - 04:00 like this is a once in a while thing. So allocate an afternoon, play a Windy playlist, get cozy, grab a drink, and just have a little moment to yourself where you kind of do this. So pull everything out, go through, maybe do a yes, no, maybe pile. Watch my video if you start to head into the declutter direction with this. Number three, um that will help you with anything that's in your maybe pile. And then also use this opportunity to identify your like most worn items. The pieces that you
            • 04:00 - 04:30 really really love, the pieces that make you feel confident, that make you feel put together. Maybe it's the designers that you enjoy and that like really fit your style, your vibe, what you're about. Pull those out as well and keep mental note of them because this is important. This is where your personal style comes in. And this is super important because I really dislike the minimalism content that I see that personally and I don't like to say this, but it's boring. Sometimes the closets are so boring. And you know, I'm not judging anyone's personal style, but you
            • 04:30 - 05:00 can have a minimal closet and still have style and you can still have fun. You don't have to wear like a button-up shirt and trousers every day and like, you know, like you can be you. There's ways to do this that are not just like the cookie cutter like this and that. And honestly, some of those clothes I feel like they don't match like a regular lifestyle sometimes. Like I'm a mom. Like I'm not wearing button-up shirts. You'll have seen in my video that I posted recently where I decluttered where I had one and I do work in an office so I have use for it. I don't even wear it. So like there's
            • 05:00 - 05:30 like a certain image with minimalism that I don't love. Like get rid of that. Make it about you. You can be yourself and a minimalist. It's like minimalism is something that like aids your lifestyle. It's not punishment and it's not boring. If it's boring, then you're doing it wrong. I personally find it super fun. I like what it brings to my life, you know, like this is not like a sad thing. I'm not forcing myself. And yes, I do live in a small apartment, but I've had a ton of space in in the past. I still was a minimalist. I'm not in
            • 05:30 - 06:00 minimalism jail over here is what I'm trying to say. So, perhaps after step one, maybe you decluttered a little bit. And hopefully you especially identified the pieces that you like and it's going to help you with step number two, which is defining your personal style. Um, this is harder than it sounds. It took me so long to figure out what my personal style is. And I think that it's also something that's ever changing. So, I don't think that you need to force yourself to fit into like only one particular style. And like I said, like
            • 06:00 - 06:30 if that doesn't speak to you that like you know the one like there's like a certain style with minimalism that always comes up. You know that one. It doesn't have to be that. Like I said, like what is your style? And if it changes, it's okay. On the channel, you you'll have seen me go through like a boho phase. I had my little streetear phase. Now I I'd say I'm like a little bit more classic, but I still like a cutesy touch. like, you know, like I actually don't really know how to define
            • 06:30 - 07:00 my personal style, but I do know what it looks like in my head and when I shop, that's what I always keep in mind. And I'm also not dressing to be someone else. I'm dressing based on what I like, if that makes sense. And it's also possible that you might be starting in a place where perhaps you've fallen into a style that actually you don't love and maybe that's where you're at right now, but it doesn't really speak to you. Change it. You're not stuck in that. Like, you can absolutely make a change. Sometimes it happens. Sometimes we like get brought into like trends and things like that and actually it's not our
            • 07:00 - 07:30 vibe. That's okay. This is like the perfect opportunity for you to get closer to what truly feels like you. Something that you can do that I really like is having some sort of mood board. And I do this for a lot of things in my life. I also make a lot of lists. Um those are just like my jam. Like me and lists is like a great big love story. Um but that's just like my personality as well. I like to work like that. Um, but the mood board is super super important because you get like a visual, like an instant visual of things that you like
            • 07:30 - 08:00 and that's actually really great to have in mind. And also, if you do Pinterest, like you can have the app on your phone and like it's something that you can access very easily. If you're shopping or if you're just getting dressed and, you know, shopping your own closet, it's actually really helpful for like the direction that you want to go in and pinpointing what you like. Sometimes, like I said, it's not super obvious what your style might be. Perhaps you don't have like all those like word descriptors and labels that fit perfectly. Sometimes there's just stuff that you like. Sometimes you like different things too. Like I'm open to
            • 08:00 - 08:30 anything honestly and like I let myself experiment. I tried to be careful about trends always. Um but you know sometimes you make mistakes and sometimes it's just fun. I'm not the minimalist that's going to tell you like don't like I'm going to say like do whatever. You just don't need to accumulate a lot of stuff while you're doing it. So do Pinterest. I have a board that I always use and it's ever changing and actually if you scroll all the way down on your boards it's likely that you'll see like kind of a progression of your personality different things that you are into and I think that's normal like people grow people change you get like different
            • 08:30 - 09:00 experiences through your life that show you different things maybe you travel and you learn something from the place you go to like who knows like allow yourself to have that um but yeah use that as like your visual kind of guide and also like as your kind of like aspiration Pinterest, don't use it just to like save like I want to buy this, I want to buy that, I want to buy that. That's actually where I use my list. I make a list and it's much more general where I'll say like, okay, this is kind of like I have gaps in my closet. This is
            • 09:00 - 09:30 what I'm looking to buy. But Pinterest is purely like here's like the atmosphere and the feeling that I like. And I think it's actually nice to not have the ability to buy that piece right away. It's like purely like a visual and like aesthetic reminder of what you're into. It's not a shopping list. But I will give you one little warning when it comes to this is like keep in mind what your true life is. Um, clothes are not going to change your life. We love to attach that kind of ideology with clothes that owning this thing is just
            • 09:30 - 10:00 going to make me this. No, you're still going to be you. You're just going to be wearing something. Um, so be realistic about what you're into. Like what I like an example I'm thinking of is like I love heels and we just talked about this recently cuz I'm actually parting with my pair of heels cuz I haven't touched them in forever. Um and if I do get a heel, I'd rather have something different. But right now I'm parting with it. I just did a declutter recently actually inspired by my video of what you should be getting rid of. Maybe potentially. Is it actually going to be
            • 10:00 - 10:30 helpful for you or is it like too aspirational? And like I was saying, this is hard and that's why the visuals are helpful, I think, because even for myself, like I'm trying to describe to you what I'm into, but it's actually very difficult. I just know there's like stuff I gravitate to and stuff I don't gravitate to. And I do like a classic look, but I also like a girly touch. Like, you know, like talk to yourself like this about what you're into so that it's feasible and practical and it's not just like, oh, I like this, but I could never wear this. Step three is going to
            • 10:30 - 11:00 be choosing a color palette. Unfortunately, I am going to make you do this. I want to tell you like just be wild and free and do anything. But I like from my experience with my closet and you'll have seen it in my recent videos. I did like a beige overhaul recently. Like I just went like full beige. I don't know. I had this like beige obsession. Don't love that color palette. like I think it was like maybe a little bit trendy or I don't know what it was or I just don't have enough clothes to like go through that like the
            • 11:00 - 11:30 beige wasn't becoming like super overpowering. I don't know. Um but I've like been pretty strict recently about my color palette. And actually, if I'm being super honest about my color palette, it's always been this and sometimes I stray away. But that's why I put this in this list because it's important and it's good to remind yourself what looks good on you, what you like, and what's easy for you to wear and rewear again. Um, so for me, it's black, white, and like ivory like almost I wish I had it on right now. I
            • 11:30 - 12:00 have a sweater that's that exact color that I just got. If you watch my last video, you'll seen it. Um, but it's like that kind of like soft, not quite like crisp white, like very slight beige. And for me, it can't be buttery. I've also learned that because it clashes with my hair. My hair like I had a sweater that I loved that was exactly the color of my hair. So beautiful. But then when I put it on with my hair, it was like too close. Like it was like setting something off. Like I don't know, it was doing something to my skin tone. Whatever. That's important. How colors
            • 12:00 - 12:30 look on you is really important to consider. I will say, and I don't think this is controversial, black is like a really good base. I think that you should have a neutral base somewhere, especially if you're going for a minimal closet. You can absolutely wear, you know, whatever colors you want and identify. It doesn't have to be like me, like a full neutral, but I do think that having a certain neutral base will help you to ground your outfits and then you accessorize from there. So, my recommendation is a neutral of some sort and then colors that you accessorize with. And if you're trying to be like a
            • 12:30 - 13:00 little bit more simple, I'd say, and honestly, easy, black, white, creamy, or gray will really help you because those do work really well together. Personally, I don't do gray. I learned that I don't love gray on me. Um, but that's like a very safe way to easily have a working like rotation in your closet and not have things clash. Step four is going to be all about high quality basics. And I'm a big advocate for basics not needing to be expensive,
            • 13:00 - 13:30 but you need to know your stuff. Honestly, you'll learn it as you experience your closet. That's what happened for me as well. I did do some fashion courses in the past that really helped me with fabric and things like that, but honestly, you'll experience it as you wear your clothes. And the smaller your closet, the more you're going to demand out of your clothes. And that's where you're going to really notice with quality. You can have like the most beautiful quality like say sweater and you'll notice how soft it is. But you'll notice with a sweater the
            • 13:30 - 14:00 true quality is not because it's nice once in a while when you touch it between all your million sweaters. It's like for me I have the one I'm thinking of one in particular. I have my black totem turtleneck. It's I think it's like a mix of cashmere and wool. It's like very nice, high quality and this one was decently expensive but it's because of the materials. Um, I can tell that it's so good because it doesn't peel on me all crazy. It retains the shape. It's still just as soft as when I got it. I am able to wash it. Um, I deep it once
            • 14:00 - 14:30 in a while, but it's not extreme. Um, it looks as it did when I bought it. And I wear it a ton because I don't have a lot of clothes to rotate through. That's when you'll notice it because you'll notice the flip side of that when your sweater is like literally disintegrating onto you, which has happened to me in the past with sweaters. You'll also notice with some non-natural fibers. Um, we're going to go there. Sometimes there's a smell. Like, you'll notice that your fabrics are less breathable. Um, they all maybe retain odors. This is
            • 14:30 - 15:00 not lovely to talk about. I want to advise you guys on that because it does make a difference. I would advise you if you're like thinking of buying anything, avoid polyester. Avoid those. Like seriously, and sometimes polyester is so expensive. Um, like really start to look at the fabric content of what you're buying or what you have already and like decide based on that. Like I have blazers that are polyester from the Frankie shop that were expensive and that's so disappointing. Honestly, I'd love to phase those out into a wool
            • 15:00 - 15:30 blazer. Um, right now they're fine. And I still I actually wear them a lot and I use them, but in the future like I wouldn't repurchase those again, for example. Even though I absolutely love the cut. Having your style is important, but then you want to be able to maintain what you have in your closet with a minimalist closet. That's super important. The clothes need to last through wear and like be able to tolerate it. Like seriously, try to also prioritize timeless. Um, you know, like a simple base, I think, is really important. Personally, my tops are super
            • 15:30 - 16:00 simple. I mentioned wanting to get like a more like dressy top to have like that as an option, but for my everyday what I wear is super simple and you can accessorize around that. I think that's a really good way to go about a minimalist closet. If you have too much too much stuff with like too much going on, you're going to get tired of them. And it also is going to be hard for you to put those things together. I know that like every day in my closet, I can put on like a white tea like this one or some sort of tea, throw on a blazer, cool pants, whatever, and then I'm good
            • 16:00 - 16:30 to go. Or cool shoes, cool bag. Like, accessorize that way. Seriously, it's going to help you so much. And speaking of this, this is one of my favorite brands and I will always recommend it. It's Brandy Melville. The price point is so good. The price point hasn't changed that much since I was pretty young. Like, I used to buy Brandy Melville like when I was in college and high school. It's still about the same price, which I can't say for really any other brand that I'm familiar with out there. Things have gotten so expensive. This is 100% cotton. I wash this all the time. It
            • 16:30 - 17:00 comes out like new every time. Super breathable. It's comfortable. And also the cuts are really really nice at Brandy Melville. I find them really flattering. The only and like actually the big negative downside of Brandy Melville is that their sizing is not super inclusive. I think it's getting a bit better. I'm starting to see tags that are actually sizes. In the past, it was like a one-sizefits-all, which is not great. Um, but I do think if Brandy Melville works for you, it's a really great place to go. Last but not least, we're heading into number five, cuz I
            • 17:00 - 17:30 told you we're going to do five points for this video. So, it's going to be shop with intention. Um, if you do shop, and let's be honest, it's likely you're going to shop again. Um, personally, I do. I'm not on the minimalism where like I don't I've like stopped buying. I really like don't get me wrong I really do try to not buy too much and I try to buy for life the best I can and I also really try to buy for my routine. I had like a little exper experimentation phase and I don't fault myself for any
            • 17:30 - 18:00 of this like I really like I'm only a person like I allow myself to live too otherwise you'll drive yourself crazy seriously. Um especially in like the world we live in it's hard to avoid it. Um, but yeah, I try like especially now I'm simplifying currently and trying to really get back to my routines. But for the most part, I don't stray too far from my routines. Um, and it means that you shop a little bit less. And with having a routine, it also means that you know exactly what you're missing and you're less likely to buy on impulse.
            • 18:00 - 18:30 Allow yourself to grow into the person that you are. Um, but you know, try to not do so by falling into like every like Tik Tok trend or like run run to whatever store to get this. Like you don't need to like some tips that I have for your list as well is that your list should be something that you have running. And honestly, you can do this for everything in your life. I plan to do a little video talking about my list and how I use them and maybe what's on my list. For example, I use the list like for my husband, for anytime there's
            • 18:30 - 19:00 like a gift I'm thinking about, like when I think of like a really good like gift idea. Like sometimes I'll think about it randomly like no birthday is coming around, Christmas is not coming, like things like that. Like I just think like oh that would be really cool. I put it on my list and then I like have like little things to choose from which is so nice. I do that for my son as well. like whenever I see anyone like mention something or like kind of like show an interest in something like I'll write it down and like keep it so like in my little list so I can refer back to it later and have like something that I'll really enjoy. I love gift giving by the
            • 19:00 - 19:30 way. I have a list for like things I might need around the house. Uh sometimes it's boring like I told you in the other video like a vacuum has been on my list. Like actually like I think your like basic essentials are really something that you should try to like nail because it changes your like everyday routine. Like I'm all about simplifying my everyday routine. So yeah, a good vacuum has been on my list. And when I say shopping list, I'm not saying like, okay, you write your list and then the next day you go shopping and you buy everything on there. Keep the list going longterm. Like I think
            • 19:30 - 20:00 it's just like a habit to get into. It's going to help you with, oh, perhaps this wasn't like a necessity or an essential and actually maybe it was trendy or like maybe like whatever this is, I don't need it anymore. Like it really helps you to like be really intentional with your shopping cuz a lot of the times I'll remove stuff from my list rather than buying it. Like I'll just be like, "Oh, I don't need that." Like actually I really don't need that. And also I find that having that list lets you like give yourself time to search for the perfect thing rather than just like, "Oh, I like
            • 20:00 - 20:30 this. Add it to the cart." Or, "I like this. Add it to the cart." Like I don't go shopping. Like I don't really like go browsing. Like when I shop, like I have like my one thing in mind and I go for it and then I leave with that or I don't if I don't find it and then I'll wait until I find it. Be very careful about not just like getting close to the item on your list. Like wait until you get exactly what it is that you really want from your list. I've been thinking about getting a loafer for like years now. I think like two years ago I tried on my
            • 20:30 - 21:00 first like loafer that I really considered um that I sent back and since then I haven't found. I might have found the pair. I'll let you know. Sorry, guys. I got a package delivery and I had to run and then he gave me the wrong package. So, I had to call him and I was like, he gave me someone else's package. And then I had to run again to go catch him outside. And I'm back. Um, and I threw off my mic cuz I didn't want to seem weird like coming down with a microphone. Like, what in the world? So, maybe I'm a little bit
            • 21:00 - 21:30 shinier than I was a second ago. Um, but yeah, so the list, make a list, check it twice. No, I'm just kidding. Make a list, have it going, like get used to having a list and it's going to really help you shop with intention. Like stay on track of the things that you actually need. Mind you, like your closet is not the only thing that you might be shopping for in your life. Like there's some things that you might need that are way more important than like a piece of clothing. And that I think really helps you to kind of put things into
            • 21:30 - 22:00 perspective as well that there is more to life than clothes, you know. Um I love looking cute. I love clothes. I love fashion. But like it's not the center of my being either, you know. And that's like the ultimate minimalist tip I think is to not care about like shopping and like acquiring things. Like there's things you can do for free. But that's a whole other topic. But yeah, I'd love to do a video kind of guiding you guys through some of my list. talk about like the things that are on my list and why. I think that could be interesting. So, yeah, I think this
            • 22:00 - 22:30 video might end up being a little bit shorter than my others, but that was the point of this one was to give you like a kind of quick like call to action, things to think about, things that I think will be helpful in your process, and just to keep things going for yourself, too. And with that, I would love for you guys to comment what your personal style is or like describing it the best you can. Like, you saw I had a hard time describing mine. Maybe I'll try to like put it nicely into words. I'm really bad at like coming out with stuff like on the spot, but if I think about it, I think I can like formulate a
            • 22:30 - 23:00 little something. So, I'll put mine in the comments as well, and I'd love for you guys to share yours. Thank you guys so much for watching this video. I so appreciate you guys being here, and you guys were so helpful in my past video. You like really commented, and I always appreciate you guys taking the time to comment and chat with me. So, I hope you'll do this for this one as well. Check out my other videos. Check out the others from this series as well. I think those are really helpful and they all go together. Like I said in the beginning, we started with like the kind of like general overview of a minimalist closet. Then we talked about some pieces that
            • 23:00 - 23:30 are good to have, some of my favorites, then things that perhaps you shouldn't have. And then I think this one is going to like open the door into like planning for your closet. If you're not subscribed, please don't forget to subscribe.
