EAC approves university AI module; national adoption remains a next step

By OpenTools Team

The module targets undergraduates across disciplines; states must consider adoption and IUCEA must develop its rollout framework.

Approval across disciplines

The October 31 EAC announcement approves an AI foundational module for undergraduates irrespective of discipline. That is a regional curriculum decision, not evidence that every degree already requires the course.

National consideration and regional delivery

Partner States were directed to consider adoption, while the Inter‑University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) must develop a regional implementation framework. Approval and delivery therefore remain separate stages for universities.

Ministers also approved a university AI network and agreed to develop Kiswahili AI certification benchmarks. The announcement does not supply benchmark results or a student enrolment date. The council acknowledged financial and resource constraints affecting implementation.
