Best AI Photo Editors: Canva, Fotor, Pixlr and Pincel
Choose Canva when an edited photo needs to become a finished design, Fotor for broad editing and batch options, Pixlr for browser editing and generative tools, or Pincel for prompt edits, product visuals and portraits. Compare the file you can export and the controls you need to preserve the original subject. This shortlist compares documented capabilities; it is not a hands-on image-quality ranking.

Choose by the source asset and the handoff
If you already have a photo and need cleanup, retouching, background or object work, Fotor and Pixlr both document broad browser editors. Fotor describes batch editing, AI enhancement and generative replace or expand tools. Pixlr describes editing, generation, background removal, face swap and design tools. Pincel is useful when the workflow is prompt-led or when product visuals, portraits and several image operations belong in one credit balance. These are provider-described capabilities, so select a small representative job and inspect the result before committing to a larger batch. If your task is narrower—restoring or enlarging a photo rather than editing a design—the Artguru vs ArtSpace.ai decision compares current enhancement credits with image creation and one-click edits. It is a separate workflow from this four-editor shortlist.
Decide how much of the original photo must stay unchanged
A conventional edit changes a setting or selected area; a generative edit can invent new details. Fotor documents exposure and color adjustments alongside AI replacement and expansion. Pixlr documents generative fill, object removal and image expansion. Pincel groups several prompt-led cleanup and image-generation operations into its toolkit. For a simple crop or brightness fix, start with the smallest edit that solves the problem. For a background replacement, inspect the subject boundary and its shadow. For an expanded crop, inspect anything created outside the original frame. If a product’s dimensions, label or color must remain accurate, compare the result directly with the source photo. A more dramatic transformation is not automatically a more useful result.
A free editor can still limit the file you can ship
Fotor’s pricing page lists Basic with limited free credits and watermarked JPG, PNG and PDF exports. Its photo-editor FAQ instead says free exports have no watermark. Because those official pages disagree, try the exact edit and download before planning a free workflow. The paid pricing cards clearly describe watermark-free HD and transparent PNG output. Pro+ specifically lists AI batch background removal and replacement. Pixlr advertises free browser access but separates paid allowances and premium features on its pricing page. Pincel provides 20 testing credits without a card. A free upload or preview is only the start: inspect the delivered file, resolution, transparency, watermark and remaining allowance.
Compare the unit before comparing the headline price
The Pixlr pricing view reviewed here showed euro monthly prices: Plus €2.49, Premium €9.99 and Ultra from €24.99; annual prices are shown as a separate discounted view. Plus lists 80 monthly AI credits and Premium 1,000. Pincel lists dollar plans with 1,000, 5,000 and 15,000 monthly credits, and says unused monthly credits carry over while the plan is active. A credit is not a universal edit: model, image, video and enhancement operations may have different costs. Calculate one representative job from the live estimate before choosing a plan. Check your checkout currency; these are not converted USD amounts. Subscription credits and top-up credits may have different expiry rules. Pixlr’s FAQ says monthly subscription credits reset at renewal, while purchased credit packs do not expire. Pincel says monthly credits roll over while the plan remains active and separately sells non-expiring top-ups. Budget for revisions as well as the first result: an image needing three rounds of cleanup may consume more than the initial estimate.
Review the actual output before publishing it
Keep the untouched source beside the generated result. Inspect faces, hands, product shape, labels, logos, edges, text, colors and the final crop at the size where customers will see it. Confirm whether the file is a preview or downloadable export, whether a watermark remains, which resolution is available and whether the intended commercial use is covered by the current plan and terms. Pincel's provider page describes a content policy and commercial-use language; that does not remove the need to review each result for accuracy and rights. Once the edit is ready, you can compress or convert an image in your browser to try a smaller file or a different format before delivery. That free OpenTools utility handles one JPEG, PNG or WebP on your device; check the reported output size because conversion can make a file larger. It does not fix image defects or remove a watermark.
Try the same three edits before choosing a subscription
Pick a non-sensitive photo with permission to edit it. Make one background removal, one object cleanup and one crop expansion in each shortlisted workflow. Save the original and the exported outputs with the settings and date. Compare the result at the size where it will be used, then inspect it at full resolution for edge artifacts and changed details. Record whether you could preserve transparency, download the needed format and repeat the edit without starting again. Note the credit cost and any paid export gate. If you process many files, test the batch feature separately: support for a batch editor does not establish that every AI effect can run in a batch. Choose the workflow that delivers the files you need with the least manual correction for your own task. The provider pages do not establish an accuracy or speed benchmark.
Canva: from a photo edit to a finished design
Canva’s AI photo editor combines basic adjustments with tools such as Magic Edit for prompt-based changes, Magic Eraser for removing distractions, and Magic Expand for extending a crop. Its photo-editor page accepts common image uploads and lets the result continue into the Canva design editor. That is useful when the deliverable is a social post or presentation, rather than an edited photo alone.
The background-remover page advertises one free use; continued access and advanced AI features depend on your plan. Confirm the selected feature and download before budgeting for repeated work. Use Canva Image Generator to create a new visual from an idea, Canva’s photo editor to change an existing image, and Magic Write for accompanying copy. These are different jobs inside the same platform.
If the requirement is a complete design-suite replacement rather than a photo edit, use the Canva alternatives guide. It separates close marketing-suite alternatives from specialist typography and product-design tools.
Common questions
Which AI photo editor is best for a broad browser workflow?
Fotor is a focused starting point when you need adjustments, retouching, background and object changes, batch editing and generative tools in one browser editor. This guide does not claim it produces better output than the other tools.
Is Fotor's free export watermark-free?
Do not assume that. The reviewed Fotor pricing page lists Basic as free with limited credits and watermarked JPG, PNG and PDF exports, while the photo-editor page uses broader free language. Check the live plan and export control for the exact file.
Is Pixlr Premium €7.99 or €9.99 per month?
The reviewed euro pricing page shows €9.99 for monthly Premium and a €7.99 monthly equivalent with yearly billing. The commitment and credit validity differ; confirm the currency and billing selector at checkout.
How many free credits does Pincel provide?
Pincel's pricing page advertises 20 free testing credits without a credit card. The credit cost varies by tool, so use the in-product estimate before spending the trial balance.
Can these tools produce a final commercial asset automatically?
Treat them as editing and ideation workflows, then review the output. Check the current plan's watermark, resolution, export and commercial-use terms, and reject results that change a product claim, label, identity or other material detail.
Is Canva’s AI photo editor free?
Canva offers basic photo editing for free. Background Remover advertises one free use, while repeated use and other advanced AI features depend on the current plan. Check the exact operation, export and regional price in your account.
