What is AnythingLLM?

AnythingLLM is an AI workspace from Mintplex Labs for chatting with documents, connecting language models and running agents. Choose the desktop app for an individual computer, self-host a multi-user installation with Docker, or use a managed cloud instance. The free desktop and self-hosted paths are separate from optional Desktop Pro features and hosted subscriptions. For document work, AnythingLLM connects your files to a retrieval workflow so an assistant can use relevant material when answering questions. It also supports local and cloud model providers, embedding services and vector databases. This flexibility is useful when you want control over the model and deployment, but it makes privacy a configuration decision: remote providers and integrations may process data outside your device. Review the model, embedder and storage settings before adding confidential files. Hosted Basic is listed at $50 per month and hosted Pro at $99 per month, with Enterprise available by enquiry. Running the open-source software yourself avoids the hosted subscription, but your hardware, infrastructure and any paid provider usage still have costs. Desktop Pro is a separate optional subscription for expanded Magic features; it is not the $99 hosted plan. AnythingLLM is a useful shortlist choice for private document assistants and team knowledge workspaces. Start with representative files and questions, check whether answers use the right source material, then evaluate access controls and deployment requirements before expanding to a larger document library. Retrieval does not guarantee that every fact in every uploaded document will appear in an answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AnythingLLM free?
The desktop app has a free entry path and the open-source Docker software can be self-hosted without a hosted subscription. You still supply suitable hardware or infrastructure and pay for any separately billed model providers. Optional Desktop Pro features and managed cloud plans are separate paid offerings.
What is the difference between Desktop Pro and cloud Pro?
Desktop Pro expands the on-device Magic features, including their daily usage allowances, and includes generated documents without AnythingLLM branding. Cloud Pro is a managed hosting plan listed at $99 per month. These are different products; check the current Desktop Pro subscription in the desktop purchase flow.
How much does AnythingLLM cloud hosting cost?
The official hosted pricing page lists Basic at $50 per month and Pro at $99 per month. Enterprise pricing is available by enquiry. Compare the hosted plan with the cost and maintenance of running your own instance, and check whether your chosen model provider charges separately.
Can AnythingLLM run completely locally?
The desktop and self-hosted options can use local components. Whether a particular workflow stays local depends on the language model, embedding service, vector database and connected tools you choose. Selecting a cloud provider can send relevant data to that provider, so a local installation alone is not a guarantee that every workflow stays on-device.
Does AnythingLLM automatically know every uploaded document?
Document retrieval selects relevant material to help answer a question; it is not a guarantee that an answer includes everything in a library. Test representative questions, inspect the retrieved material where available, and verify important answers against the original files.
How do I remove documents from AnythingLLM?
The documentation distinguishes removing a document from a workspace from deleting it from My Documents. Workspace removal stops that workspace using it but retains the library copy. Deleting it from My Documents removes its parsed source and cached embeddings from the system and removes it from workspaces.
Can AnythingLLM connect to MCP servers?
Yes. Its agent tools can connect to configured MCP servers, and the management interface shows their status and available tools. Check each server's requirements and permissions. MCP compatibility does not make AnythingLLM the publisher of those external servers.
Does AnythingLLM collect telemetry?
The project documents anonymous usage telemetry and provides controls to disable it. Review those controls together with the privacy policies of any external providers or integrations used by your installation.
