49:00 - 49:30 go about doing that and mobilizing our different sites and the people of our church to engage in that area and so with this being our community impact weekend just wanted to give you a little snapshot of some of the things that our church has been doing uh and that you are a part of so uh who has heard of Southern Cross Kids Camp fantastic that's good good so just this January uh uh we had 30 children from adverse
49:30 - 50:00 circumstances that were able to go away on this Camp to be blessed to be uh encouraged and supported and just have some time out uh incredible time there're 55 volunteers and half of those were actually from City Life Isn't that cool to be able to serve in that way um and this is the outcome of that one team member shared how that after reading a bedtime story a girl said to her I haven't heard about Jesus before my mother has never said anything about him to me so that person had this
50:00 - 50:30 opportunity for this little girl for the first time to hear about Jesus isn't that an incredibly precious moment to have on that camp you know um up at whittles se uh we've been doing quite a bit of uh stuff building some relationship and working with the community in an area called beverage so where we are uh we are City Life Widow SE which is the local government area where we are uh our church itself is in law and north of us there's a large growth Corridor not
50:30 - 51:00 dissimilar to out in the Southeast that we're seeing and so this goes up along the Hume Highway and beverage is one of those communities currently there's about 9,000 people that live there but they have no Community Services really so there's actually no shopping center there's no doctor's surgeries no pharmacies there's no takeaway shops there is nothing um other than a private golf course um which is so important for every Community um and a greater there's a community center and so we've actually started doing a
51:00 - 51:30 once a month uh Community dinner Outreach there uh a group of our church are going there and actually ran it last night uh last night they did some ballroom dancing classes um which you know not my bag but that's okay in fact I I popped along one time and they did line dancing that night um I've made sure all tapes are burnt of that as I was involved but you know what's been awesome is is that we're seeing these different people from this community where there's not opportunities to
51:30 - 52:00 actually gather together where they're coming together and they're beginning to build relationship and there's Community being built and we're able to serve this community in this way having a free meal people can come along be a part of things have a bit of fun and we're in the midst building Community um City Life Community Care is doing incredible things and you saw Deb from the team uh on the the video there can I just give you a few statistics about what City Life Community Care has been able to do this year already so this is to the end of February they've already been working
52:00 - 52:30 with 272 families here in the area around Knox they've provided 160 counseling sessions from across KNX and whitta there's 65 mentors that have been at work working with people one life group has already completed a home Garden maintenance project for the year and if you're a life group leader you're like what's that ask the team at clcc they'll be able to let you know we've had the food Food Bank bus a big purple bus that comes out to provide food to
52:30 - 53:00 people we had it parked in the car park here in February we had 108 people attend and it's going to be back again in April May and June which is just a great way of being able to have people ACCESS food that otherwise wouldn't be able to access it and then we've provided 220 food Parcels given away more than $1,000 of food from our pantry to local families that's in 6 weeks this year isn't that incredible you are a part of that and just one quick story of the the
53:00 - 53:30 impact of mentoring so mentoring is getting alongside people that might be in a challenging circumstance and we have different types of mentors uh some of them are around finances some of them are General uh just supporting people some of them are with ch primary school kids called kids hope but this instance there was a a guy that was connected with uh City Life Community Care who was really struggling with these energy bills and there was one bill in particular particular that had got well out of hand and had actually set up a
53:30 - 54:00 payment plan with the provider and had got to such a point that even that had um timed out now so he was and causing him massive stress not sleeping lots of pressure there so he met with one of our financial coaches and what we call an energy Mentor who can ADV Advocates with the energy uh providers so what happened was they got together they were able to actually negotiate a new payment plan and rescheduled repayments that he was able to actually access found out he was actually able to access an energy Grant
54:00 - 54:30 which actually provided relief as well in that and through this all of a sudden he's gone from thinking there's no hope I don't know what I'm going to do here that there was a way forward and that was from actually sitting down and working through with our team and so just to encourage you to know that there are real people seeing real change in their lives because of what we are doing here as a church and through the ministry of City Life Community Care so thank you for the role that everyone plays in that um it is an incredible Ministry of our church can we give a big
54:30 - 55:00 hand to City Life Community Care I think that would be appropriate so I want to start today with a story uh and this is a story from a few years ago now I have three kids who are now 13 it's weird saying 13 but the yes 13 and uh 10-year-old twins so when our kids were first born they were our eldest was two and three months so we had three kids under two and a half
55:00 - 55:30 there's not a whole lot of great memory that comes from that time like in terms of great memories kids are wonderful but there's a bit of brain fogers to was did that really happen or did I just dream that has anyone else experienced that parents in those early years um and so what I'm about to share it happened I'm not sure if it's exactly 100% as it happened but it feels like it's this is what happened right so at the time I was working at uh World Vision uh amazing organization and I had the opportunity
55:30 - 56:00 to hear from incredible people regularly so we'd have people that were doing great work around the world come in and share and so this was incredibly inspiring for me so I remember coming home to to my wife Tanner and going tan you're never going to believe this today I got to meet with a guy who is working people with people in Zambia and they're helping them to access goats so that they can actually start breeding them they get the milk and they can sell them it's amazing they're just transforming

58:30 - 59:00 that if we're more present in more places we will see overflow happen and more present being this idea that often in life we get find ourselves in a distracted situation whether it's our mobile phone where it's thinking about the the 10 other things that we need to do whether it's thinking about a conversation we had uh a couple of hours ago that we're like oh did I engage in that conversation well but we're not actually present in that moment and fully engaged with where we currently
59:00 - 59:30 are to unpack more present further I would argue and this is what I've put forward to our churches is that there are three things that we can be more present in that are going to actually help us to position ourselves for overflow first of all we need to be more present in our relationship with God has anyone ever been praying and halfway through your prayer you're like oh my goodness I've been thinking about the 20 other things and not actually praying right how do we actually find ourselves more present in our relationship with God we have 21 days of prayer and
59:30 - 60:00 fasting happening Monday week let's be thinking about how we can engage with that you got pre- service prayer happening here at KNX jump in and be a part of it but more present in our relationship with God I believe we need to be more present in our relationship with each other here at church not just going through the motions not just uh but deeply engaging with others in our church Community more present with each other and thirdly and this is where I want to land today is we need to be more present with our community if we're going to see God's

60:30 - 61:00 this before we in the world but not of the world and I don't know if it was just me and the church I was in it may be the case but often the emphasis was on the second half of this phrase rather than the first half yeah we're in the world but we're not of the world and it ended up as a we would Define ourselves by the second half that we are not of the world that we don't do a lot of the things the world does because we're Christians and followers of Jesus and what that ends up doing is it it's
61:00 - 61:30 something that actually builds barriers and separates us not in positive ways at times but actually negative times because we set ourselves apart you know as I mentioned before I worked at well vision for a number of years and Tim Costello was our CEO when he was the um the head of the not for-profit commission he actually challenged not for prophets in Australia to stop defining themselves as not for prophets because his uh idea here was is that to Define Yourself by what you're not you

62:00 - 62:30 that I I want us to jump into uh John 17 in a moment which is where I believe this saying it seems that this is where this saying comes from but to help us do that I actually want us to look at John uh chapter 13 through to John chapter 16 and what this is this is a passage of scripture where Jesus and his disciples uh having a conversation of the it's the last supper and Jesus is downloading to

63:30 - 64:00 days of prayer and fasting in this prayer we see an incredible picture of the Trinity like incredible we see Jesus praying to the father for the Holy Spirit to come we actually see them working one and I'd encourage you jump into John 17 to see this because this is incredible we see that Jesus's heart and a cry of unity for believers but what I want to look at here is how does this apply how do we see in the
64:00 - 64:30 world but not of the world applied here so we're going to jump into verse 13 so John 171 13-18 says this I am coming to you now but I say these things while I am still in the world so that you may have the full measure of my joy within them I've given them your word and the world has hated them for they are not of the world anymore than I am of the world my prayer is not that you take them out of the world world but did you protect them from the evil one they are not of the world even as I am not of it sanctify
64:30 - 65:00 them by the truth your your word is truth as you sent me into the world I have sent them into the world so in the world but not of the world I I don't it's not actually what Jesus prays here I think maybe a better way to to summarize this section would be not not of the world but sent to it because Jesus actually says that we are

65:30 - 66:00 disciple and Jesus is laying it out there in his prayer to the father he makes it very clear that we're going to face similar things on earth he picks up things that we be hated because of God's word with is with us that doesn't make me excited that he prays that we need to be protected that we need to be protected that we are to be Sanctified by the truth and this is this
66:00 - 66:30 sanctification is the process of becoming more like Jesus it's this being set apart and holy so that we can be used for Holy purposes this word Sanctified could be used for people or objects in the temple that were for Holy purposes there's this separation idea so that God can use us the way he wants to but what I also note In this passage is that Jesus doesn't want us
66:30 - 67:00 taken out of the world either it's going to be hard as I mentioned before we have a 13-year-old she's just started high school and man High School parents and those that have walked through more power to you like we're just starting to get a feel for some of the challenges that the teenagers face in the world today it's hard right but Jesus still wants us in the world verse 15 he says my prayer is not that
67:00 - 67:30 you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one Jesus isn't asking us to be leaving he's asking us to be there and present we then see in John in verse 18 it says this as you sent me into the world I have sent them into the world and now for me this here this blows my
67:30 - 68:00 mind as I was sent into the world I have sent them into the world does anyone know the passage of scripture John 3:16 for God so loved the world that he gave his only son the father gave his son Jesus to the world as Jesus was sent by the father father so he is sending us to continue

69:30 - 70:00 person all about well knowing people and how to actually engage with people in this world and he he put forward this idea of that often in the world that we live in we default to seeing to to trying to deal with some tasks as efficiently as possible rather than relationally and therefore we miss opportunity because of this let me explain the illustration he uses is the
70:00 - 70:30 school time drop off which for many parents who knows that is just a time period from when you've rushed around in the morning to get ready for work to drop your kid so that you can get to church for the day to begin would that be a fair picture as to what the school drop off is right I don't know about you but it's sort of like while we're still moving I don't want to stop like if I can get the door open push the kids out of the car and keep moving while still doing that so I can get to where I need to be it's a good time that is dealing
70:30 - 71:00 with it efficiently but what happens if rather than dealing with that moment efficiently we deal with it relationally and we instead of trying to not stop and to engage with it as quickly as possible so we can get to the real thing what happens if that moment is the real thing that that is a moment that we are being sent to our school community and instead of it being a rush that we actually stop drop that kid off get it get out of the car and walk down and actually engage with some parents
71:00 - 71:30 and other kids maybe the teachers you know my my wife tan is a is a gun at this incredible and some of the conversations that she's had with people just in those couple of minutes of school drop off man it's it's amazing because you get people in these vulnerable moments what happens and this is appliable in applicable in so many different areas of life let's not just see things as efficiently tasks to be done but maybe what is it if that's a moment where
71:30 - 72:00 Jesus is sending us to that very circumstance let's not miss the moments we are sent and could it also be that sometimes Jesus is sending us but it gets a little bit scary so we Retreat back behind into our safe Christian bubble you know this idea of echo Chambers we need Christian Community and there are times where we need to step

73:30 - 74:00 the road for us day in day out the question would be being present in our community seeing ourselves as Sin do we know who our neighbors are do we know the challenges that they may be facing do we know our work colleagues the person that sits at the desk next to us or that that we maybe bump into at the cafe do we know what's going on in their lives that's what it looks like to be present to know what's going on in the world of the people around us do we view ourselves as scent or is

74:30 - 75:00 essentially I was forced into it anyone had those opportunities before so my son uh Jude started playing Cricket this past season uh under 12's cricket and uh the team was looking for a coach now I've played a little bit of cricket in the past I had the ability to coach I definitely did not want to coach Jude did not want me to a coach he's like dad you can't coach my team um apparently he's embarrassed of me or
75:00 - 75:30 something I don't know 10 year olds these days um but what happened was is that we're getting closer to the season starting and no one's putting their hand up to coach the team it's getting awkward I'm like oh man I really should put my hand up no I'm not going to got enough on my plate I don't need this as well don't need to be running training sessions anyway we get a message from the club saying uh this under 12's team doesn't have a coach so what we're going to have to do is they're going to have to train with one of the under TW other under 12's teams which happens on a

76:00 - 76:30 opportunity that I was able to actually be a great male adult influence on a group of 11 10 and 11 year old boys we had a blast you know has anyone like CH children's sport it can get a bit like chaotic sometimes like there was one time I thought there was going to be a punch on um anyway but but I was actually able to bring a calming influence to that and was actually say hey boys is this the
76:30 - 77:00 way that we engage with life like do we is this how we do it or do we you know step back it was this incredible teaching moment with these group of boys that you'd hope is going to stay with them for Life the conversation with parents ah amazing it's amazing how parents open up to a cricket coach about some of the struggles that older siblings are having or family break Downs you know it was an incredible blessing it's not because I looked for it there was just God put me in this

78:00 - 78:30 incredible um campaign that we run each year which is getting together these orange bags that we fill with grocery items and in each bag they're going to be out in the foyer after church that you can grab one in each bag there's a list of items that City Life Community Care would love you to think about putting in and you can put in as much as you want or as little as you want what we want to encourage you is to be involved and what we do then is we package these up they go into the store room at City
78:30 - 79:00 Life Community Care and they're able to be then distributed to people that are in need in our community it's absolutely incredible and with the shifting in how these things are done bags of Hope is just an absolute blessing and allows our ministry team here to do an incredible job serving those in need in our community so can I encourage you get on board grab a bag as you leave and and and be involved with this one other little add-on to this is is that we'd

84:00 - 84:30 and so yeah thank you guys over 20 years so um we also have a great opportunity here uh we are in the pantry at City Life Community Care on our KNX site Harry can you walk us through uh this what's behind us here these fridges and these freezers absolutely so we've got um the shelves for for dry goods of course and that's what you're going to be donating there um that's all stuff that come comes in through donations through bags of Hope and just during the week um people just randomly giving us stuff as well um we have a bunch of volunteers that help us with that yeah
84:30 - 85:00 this is like a fulltime job AR you here absolutely a full-time job uh sorting through the stuff shout out to our volunteers that do that for us uh sorting out getting rid of the stuff that's after it sell by date or damaged goods etc etc and then on this side we have um a lot of fresh goods here so fresh goods are where the Donate button comes in on the website because obviously you can't donate meat you can't donate yogurt and cheese because it might sit outside the fridge for a while and then it's going to go off so
85:00 - 85:30 that stuff we need to buy in fresh we also do have um some um Community groups that we partner with that help us with this so um we have Oz Harvest who donate to us um and food bank some of you might be aware of those organizations which um gather food stocks from Fantastic the great you know from Co Safeway and then deliver that to us but that has kind of dried up recently and so we need to buy in more
85:30 - 86:00 and more stuff so please don't hesitate to donate to that um and then of course we've got faua faua um give us these amazing meals we donate fresh goods to them and they actually cook up this food and donate it back to us to give to clients so yeah there's a heap of stuff going on it's just not one or two items but a whole lot of stuff that needs to get sorted uh and packed and then presented to the clients big job it's it's an incredible
