- 00:30 - 01:00 as well so without further ado let's get into today's video your confidentiality statement is key especially with hard to reach defensive clients the statement of confidentiality if done correctly can bring down a lot of walls it allows you to build trust so I've done a video about confidentiality and introducing it in the past I want to see my very first video to put it shortly so you don't have to click through to that video and I don't get completely embarrassed you
- 01:00 - 01:30 want to start off by telling the client that this is a safe space you want to be sure and I'll go into social work mode now hi hello my name is Lauren how are you doing today great great it's great to meet you I want to start off by letting you know that my role here is as a school social worker do you know what a social worker is have you heard about it so some people can be fearful about social workers they think that we're out to catch you in different things and that's completely untrue and want to let
- 01:30 - 02:00 you know right off hand that this is a safe spot this is a spot that's meant for you everything that you say to me will remain confidential do you know what that means great job confidentiality does mean keeping something private right so to expand on that a little bit more whatever you say to me will stay between you and me now there's exceptions to every rule so if you do tell me that you want to hurt yourself and by hurt yourself I mean seriously like you want to kill yourself then
- 02:00 - 02:30 that's something that I do cannot keep private I'm gonna have to share it with someone to get you help if you also tell me that you're gonna hurt someone else or you have plans on hurting someone else I'm I will have to report that because I want to be sure that everyone is safe including you and the choices that you're making and lastly if you tell me that someone is hurting you that also is gonna impact your safety so I do need to report that and we'll talk about that before a report is made
- 02:30 - 03:00 I'll let you know if that is something that I'm planning on doing does that make sense this strategy builds trust I always see the walls come down especially with adolescents because they aren't used to a space like this a space where they can openly share it and not have all of their drama and their personal business get around a school around the community whatever it may be I really also like to use scaling questions those are questions that ask a client beforehand
- 03:00 - 03:30 or afterwards where their anger where their anxiety where their depression lies on a scale of 1 through 10 or you can even use colored sheet papers different interventions are around to help gauge these essentially they're all scaling questions and this again helps you to see what a client is at and then as we get to know that we get to really be an assistant in helping our clients bring down or manage anxiety anger depression etc strength based questions
- 03:30 - 04:00 are honestly my go-to I love these questions they come out so fluidly I almost don't even realize that I'm using them sometimes again that's going to social work mode I can show you exactly how I use these so I hear that that's been a problem for you that sounds very stressful how do you typically manage this problem like day to day what do you typically do what are you doing right now to manage it so that's how you've managed it so far
- 04:00 - 04:30 amazing exception questions are my favorite it's another way of gathering strengths you're dealing with so much it's incredible it's incredible to me I hop I'm curious though when I ask you something has there ever been a day that the problem hasn't felt so extreme maybe a time that you weren't able to manage it or at least bring the stress of it down yeah how did you do that what was different
- 04:30 - 05:00 about that particular time or that particular day and I know the question seems odd is kind of hard to wrap your mind around a question like this I told you all it's gonna ask a bunch of questions that sound a little different maybe weird but my point in asking this is I really think we can find a solution to the problem if we look at the exceptions that lie in between because every day isn't down in the dumpster area is it a lot of the answers lie within that person we just
- 05:00 - 05:30 need to get them to realise that and get them to practice it a lot more and if they don't realize that then a great homework assignment is assigning the client to figure out when they're not as stressed so that we can repeat that and if you can't thinking of them now then it just means we have to pay attention to them a little bit closer so try to think about that as you're going through your day because you're doing something to stay sane you're doing something to manage everything it's amazing the
- 05:30 - 06:00 miracle question is a fun one it always feels a little funny doing it I created that meme just because I thought it matched perfectly I always feel very awkward when I ask that question but it's a fun way of kind of switching it up throwing a curveball in there and a fun way of getting a client even those that are a little more guarded to really think beyond to maybe put some mindfulness into play focusing on the positive rather than the negative all the time and it might even be a good
- 06:00 - 06:30 introduction to that to positive thinking to creating a mood board to creating a vision or a dream board can I ask you a funny question this one I mean I've I know I've asked funny questions but this one's a little out there sure okay good let's say you go to sleep tonight right you're fast asleep that sleep you ever had and tomorrow you wake up and it seems like everything's the same but it's not by some miracle last night
- 06:30 - 07:00 while you were asleep the problem completely disappeared from your life it's gone and you have no idea because you were asleep the whole time how would you know what would be the very first clues to the fact that the problem is gone how would that morning look how would that day can we play it out you don't necessarily need to know what happened overnight all you need to know is what looks different what little small changes can happen and
- 07:00 - 07:30 can we apply them to the clients current life so let's say the client did say tomorrow when I wake up all of a sudden I wake up on time I actually did get a good night's sleep if they mention that they get to school on time what caused them to get to school on time so you do have to make a little more of directed questions getting to school on time does that mean that the car was fixed does that mean that the bus passed on time does that mean that
- 07:30 - 08:00 it wasn't raining that day we went a good picture of what the solution looks like so we can gather strategies that might work in the future that we can really apply to the clients situation those are a few of my suggestions I work predominantly with middle school through high school and young adult type clients so most of my interventions are going to be talk based this one I wanted to keep very general two topics and situations that I bring up in therapy to get the conversation flowing and to gather the
