Victory Leadership Podcast: Handling the Word Transcription
00:00 - 00:30 [Music] hello everyone i'm dennis c i'm one of the pastors in victory and you are watching the victory leadership podcast for this episode we will talk about handling the word of god and we have with us none other than the running pastor and the director of victory in metro manila bishop ferdi kabiling bishop ferdi welcome to our leadership podcast how are you doing thank you thank you i'm doing good thank you for
00:30 - 01:00 having me run this morning good went well now today we'll be talking about handling the word of god if there is someone since pastor ferdi discipled me i've seen firsthand how you've read the word i could one of those moments that i could vividly remember was when we were in bogota colombia and we were roommates and from 8 pm onwards you would just study the word and read the word and then i by 10 o'clock i say i'm about to sleep but you kept on reading the word so i i wasn't sure how long you
01:00 - 01:30 were reading the word and when i woke up 6 00 am 6 30 am you were again reading the word and then going to the gym while i slept and let god spoke through me through dreams signs and wonders it speaks to us yeah there's so much passion in you when you read the word of god why is the word of god so important for you i realized that even jesus himself told the disciples he says in john chapter 8 verse 31 he says if you abide in my word you're truly my
01:30 - 02:00 disciples and really his word is is the one that really helped sustain me and even growing up with my mother she has inculcated a love for the word and so when i became a believer and follower of christ it dawned on me those those those times that i would see not just my mother but even my grandmother reading their bibles when i was in high school and i made a i
02:00 - 02:30 made a vow in my heart dennis when i was in high school when i when i grow old like my grandmother i'll start reading my bible guess what at 18 years old i was already reading my bible when i came to know christ and i said and so it became a almost like a legacy if you may and so that's why i got into the scriptures you know in our second episode bishop manny carlos shared that reading the word is a spiritual discipline that we need to develop and personally for you bishop ferdi how
02:30 - 03:00 do you read and handle the word of god it starts with deciding to have a time where you would want to read the word of god and i decided to do it in the morning there are times in the evening from there you get something to write on a notebook where you can write out whatever the lord is speaking to you that's what we call your daily devotions um and it became a almost like a routine um even in my running uh if i have to go out early i just put on
03:00 - 03:30 the audio of this of the bible and just and listen to it even when you're in traffic you can depending on here in manila i mean you you'd want to have several ways on how to connect with the scriptures whether having a bible like this or a bible app in order for you to be sustained now what are some practical tips you can share with our victory group leaders on handling god's word in ezra chapter
03:30 - 04:00 7 verse ten uh it mentioned there pastor dennis that ezra set his heart to three things and he says he set his heart in studying uh studying the scriptures doing it and teaching it and i would like to encourage our victory group leaders to really have developed a a habit of not just reading the bible devotionally but studying it over and reading it over and over again
04:00 - 04:30 looking at the context the neighboring text and the neighboring neighboring verse and chapter if you need to in order for you to have a good grasp of the text you're reading and that's how you you study take down notes whatever the possible themes that are coming out from the text you're reading and and you study and you write it down and and find ways to allow that to to touch your heart and then from there
04:30 - 05:00 you'll ask yourself uh how should i respond to this what is the lord speaking to me and and by doing that then you get to when you leave your house when you're going to your uh work and you're faced with different situations whether you're faced with pain your your face with temptations and you're able to leave out the scriptures the word of god the way when jesus was tempted he used the word
05:00 - 05:30 of god when you're facing different difficulties you remember the promises of god and and so that's those are uh the benefits that you can receive by studying the scriptures you're able to leave it out but it should not stop there um this time you need to find a way to be able to share it to others yeah that's why the third part of ezra's uh way of of his goal when he helped establish the spiritual formation of the
05:30 - 06:00 of the people was he didn't just study he didn't just leave it out or or did it but also he he started teaching others and that's very crucial that our victory group leaders are able to do that in a regular basis i read the study that when you read you get a little percentage of the retention rate but when you start journaling and writing down your thoughts and you said a lot of good questions when when you read the scripture what is the lord saying how should i respond it brings up the
06:00 - 06:30 retention rate of the scripture that you're reading and i notice you still do a lot of notebook journaling right yeah yes using that yes and i think it's a good practice that we need to revive again then it's the the scripture says uh in ii timothy chapter 3 verse 16 to 17 that all scripture is god breathed out and and it's useful or profitable it's almost like apostle paul is using a business term here profitable for
06:30 - 07:00 teaching uh reproof uh correcting and training for righteousness and those those terms are are really very crucial and as i mentioned a while ago for the victory group leaders um when they start teaching and it's teaching through the scriptures not teaching through the books that they have read or other journals that they have read out there written by other people but really digging through the scriptures yourself
07:00 - 07:30 and i believe that uh as as christians as leaders we're called of god to become literary um archaeologists where we dig into the scriptures rather than going straight to commentaries and journals and blogs of other people why don't you go straight to the scriptures and when you do that then you were able to teach others and bring about reproof and you know then it's reproved uh i received that
07:30 - 08:00 because as a runner i i get to receive reproof almost every monday from my coach i have a trainer uh i have a coach every monday so you go through training every monday every monday um especially uh three years before i run across the philippines if you remember imagine this on on a sunday he'll be in my service listening to my sermon but on a monday he has his own sermon he's training me in ultra in
08:00 - 08:30 in my running and and it is a tough training where he would reproof me uh in order for me to have personal growth in my running and the same way in in the spirit we need help from the scripture in order for us to be corrected and reproved in order for us to grow and and be trained in righteousness and that's very crucial and that that will uh happen as we get
08:30 - 09:00 into uh the scriptures and you know in verse 17 in that same chapter it says it says there that and the man of god will be complete and equipped for every good work could you imagine that uh you can you can be equipped uh to engage to help others to to serve others because i have been uh as a man of god became complete through
09:00 - 09:30 the scriptures and became equipped to serve others and so that's very crucial to truly handle god's word yeah i think we need to be careful not to give just our own opinion or the opinions of men and i would remember every time you would trade me or even rebuke me you'll always say what does the bible say about this you always bring me back to the word and i think it's the safest thing to do for a leader to point his members his victory group members
09:30 - 10:00 back to the word and say this is what the word of god is saying rather than just saying my own opinion about it or how i feel about it yes but really going back i think that's part of a training pastor then is that when people are faced with issues then ask them other questions and say what do you think the lord is speaking to you and and sometimes they'll give you an answer if you want to dig further you can say what do you think the scripture is saying uh what the bible is saying to your situation right now and you know sometimes they already have the answers all you have to do is to ask the right
10:00 - 10:30 question and lo and behold they discovered that you know i'm able to um enjoy the benefit of being into the word and and by asking the right questions and and making them realize this is our standard the holy spirit is there reading through scripture in order to speak to us but really seriously uh it's the word of god nevertheless still the word of god and if we teach our young people to have the fear of the lord when the word of god is is is being spoken
10:30 - 11:00 any person on earth whether you're a king whether you're a poper it doesn't really matter you have to give your attention to the word of god and thank you for exemplifying it and i know you're still studying up until now you've read the word i think you've hit the 10 000 hours of studying the word but you never stop learning and i think that's the respect and honor everybody needs to have when it comes to the word dennis i right now
11:00 - 11:30 i'm enrolled in a seminary and we have tons and tons of assignments and um i'm getting frustrated because it seems like even my own daily devotion uh this study is is this studying of whatever i'm learning from school is is eating up my time so i made a decision look i'm gonna i'm gonna put my priorities in order my daily devotion my family day off my ministry work i
11:30 - 12:00 even included running because i'm i'm running for real life foundation so now i can just study my assignments from the seminary in different times as long as i'm able to do my daily devotion my family time my family day off my ministry work and when i do that i can do doing my assignments in other times so yeah and i think uh how you exemplified it when we were growing up that you were
12:00 - 12:30 reading your word is something that's so contagious i think that's the biggest lesson curriculum that i've seen in your life that's why i've committed to read my bible every day since i was in grade three up until now i still read the word i try to finish my bible every year it's because of the importation that you gave you're there telling me every day read the word read the word but it's just showing just the passion that you have for the word and i think as victory group leaders this is a responsibility we have the greatest lesson we can give to our members is to
12:30 - 13:00 show to them how much we honor respect and have that discipline to dive into the word and study the word of god yes can i ask you to lead our victory group leaders into a prayer yes let's just pray right now father god thank you once again for the opportunity to be used of you as what you said in your word as a man of god complete and equipped for every good work that whatever opportunity and an open door that would present themselves to us we would be
13:00 - 13:30 ready lord to minister to speak to bring about encouragement because lord god you have been fueling us you have been lord providing us with your encouragement with strength from the word of god and may you continue to help us lord have the grace not just to study but grace to live it out and grace to be able to impart it to others bless everyone lord as they continue to read the word in jesus name
13:30 - 14:00 amen amen thank you so much bishop ferdi and once again this is dennis c and you are watching victory leadership podcast see you again in our next episode [Music] you
