Existing mods get a narrow transition.
New uploads cannot wait until January
New uploads must complete updated disclosure and permission fields immediately, according to the detailed policy. The sixty‑day period beginning November 3 is narrower: it covers new itemised AI‑assisted descriptions and fork/AI permission tags for existing mods. Basic AI disclosure and copyright rules remain enforced throughout. By January 2, 2027, all hosted mods must meet the new requirements.
The submission guidelines introduce the changes with a January 2 date. Read that alongside the detailed transition section: the deadline does not let a new upload leave its updated fields blank.
Explain the AI work behind the tag
The guidelines distinguish three labels. AI‑Generated Content covers work where AI produced most of the code, voices, dialogue or other assets. AI Media covers material outside the mod itself, such as promotional images and page descriptions. AI Assisted describes human‑led work with limited AI involvement, including texture upscaling or audio cleaning.
For the AI Assisted classification, the detailed policy requires the main public mod page to name the tools or models used and identify their outputs in the finished mod. A tag alone does not explain which voice lines, textures or code came from AI.
The page must also clearly present the required evidence of human‑led development. Project‑file history or version‑control commits can show how the work evolved; authors may need to explain their code during a moderation dispute. If the evidence does not support that classification, moderators may replace the tag.
Permissions remain a separate question
New AI and fork permissions are intended to default to “Ask Me”. The policy preserves existing copyleft licences: platform defaults do not override licences that already permit derivative work.
Nexus’s November 3 announcement says changes will arrive in stages. Permissions and discovery improvements are still being developed, and existing permission settings will not be reset. Published rules and controls have separate rollout clocks.
